    3. Thank you Sue. I hope a family member of one of these families was the purchaser. I had searched under Shermerhorn but found nothing perhaps because the sale was closed already. 2. Sheila, I have a copy of the Van Deusen book, by Capt. A.H. Van Deusen and been looking through it, so far I have no Simeon Miller and no Margaret with that birth year and location. Have a few more pages to do, but was wondering if there is a chance that Margaret may have been born in a different location or year? Sylvia's suggeston of the death certificate could offer you a lot of needed information. 3. I do not know if you are aware of it, but if you have access to ancestry you can do a search by first name. I have done this by getting the year and county that I want to search first and then key in the first name. Obviously if you have a common first name to check for, you can then break the search down into townships. It is not the fastest way but it has also been successful for me. In Wisconsin, where I live, there are many Endres names that are even indexed as Andrews, mainly due to the numerous languages being spoken here. A German speaking person doing the census may be talking to a Norwegian. Good luck. Sandie PS - In Madison, Dane Co., WI there is a Van Duesen Street on the southwest side of the city. 3. Sheila, as Margaret died in 1888, there is a good chance that a death certificate was made out for her. You should be able to find that at the Town Clerk's office for the area she was living in, or In Albany at the State offices. 2. Try the search both ways. Sometimes one way will be better than the other. It is not necessarily the same for every type search. 3. Linda, Another thing to try.......I've sometimes got 'stuck' with McCormick, so try VanDeusen & Van Deusen. In other words, separate the Van from the Duesen. Sometimes prefix surnames show up either way. 2. Thank you Patricia: That may be my next step. I was hoping to have some input from the list before I take that step. If any list members are related I will send copies of the grave markers. Janice Brown >> If you know when and where William Brown and Edna Saunders were married, their marriage certificate should mention the names of their parents as well as their places of birth. William Brown's death certificate and newspaper obituary should also contain this information. Patricia Morrow, Windham Town Historian (Greene County, NY) >> I sent the following email to the list a few days ago and it did not appear on the list. I hope it posts this time. ------------------------------------- I am trying to identify William Brown 1888-1956 who m. Edna. Edna 1896-1967 is a dau of Daniel and Minnie. I have grave marker photos of William & Edna Brown, Tracy R. and Jessie K. Quinn Saunders. Brown descendant, Janice

    2. Hi, The part about the brain was cute, I usually say that after a long week of research. Thanks so much for all of your suggestions, your mind is working far better than mineand you have been very helpful. :-)) End of week humor, my grandfather from the 1600's was fired from his job as company miller! peigi mulligan <pmulligan@hvc.rr.com> wrote: If I only had a brain..... 3. Dear Leslie Thank you very much for the information. As I was reading through some notes, when I saw your mention of Saratoga county that rang a bell and I believe that one of the families I am researching may have been there in the 1770-1800, before they moved on to Holland Land Purchase. The name I am researching is Van De Bogart and there are numerous spellings of it. There were 5 brothers (Cherrick, Nicholas, William, Joseph and Charles) and I think they all may have been in the Charlston area. Do you have any of them listed in the Tax District? Thanks Shelley Fox > [Original Message] > From: Leslie B. 1. Re: [GREENE COUNTY] revolutionary war soldiers
    2. Leslie B. Potter
    3. Dear Shelley Fox and List: There were 388 taxpayers on the October 23, 1779 Schenectady District Tax List for Albany County, NY. (Summary of the 1779 Albany County Tax returns prepared by John N. Bleecker, Albany County Treasurer, New York State Library call number: KT 13324, GY Lansing Papers, Box 1 file 2) The Second Regiment of the Albany County Militia was raised from the Schenectady Tax District of Albany County, NY. According to New York in the Revolution as Colony and State compiled by James Roberts, 903 men served in the Second Regiment during the entire course of the Revolution. Roberts was the Comptroller of New York State and compiled a list of names for each Regiment based on pay records. So 903 is probably a slightly inflated number because he recorded each variation of spelling of each name as though it represented a separate person. So I shall let you figure out the percentages. I do not know enough about the population of the Schenectady District to even hazard a guess. If you wanted to know about the population of the Saratoga Tax District I might be able to be of more help to you. If you want a more comprehensive picture of Albany County, I bequeath you the following trivia. Albany County Summary page for 1779 Tax Lists From the Records of John N. Bleecker found in the Lansing Papers in the New York State Library, Albany, NY The Summary page from John N. Bleecker's Albany County Treasurers records. Name of District Number of Persons Rated First Ward of the City of Albany 224 Second Ward of the City of Albany 103 Third Ward of The City of Albany 147 Manor of Ranselear District 1,524 Manor of Livingston District 526 Claverach District 700 Schohary & c. District 209 Schonectady District 388 Coxhachy District 257 Kinderhook District 360 Saratoga District 374 Schachtakook District 233 Hosack District 182 German Camp District 53 Great Inboght District 52 Half Moon District 273 Cambridge District 153 Kings District 589 Ballstown District 57 Please note that the spelling of each place name in the above list is the exact spelling that Mr. Bleecker actually used. The Albany County Tax Districts from which the Albany County Militia Regiments were raised: Regiment Name of Tax District 1st City of Albany 2nd Schenectady District 3rd 1st Rensselerwyck Battalion 4th 2nd Rensselaerwyck Battalion 5th 3rd Rensselaerwyck Battalion 6th 4th Rensselaerwyck Battalion 7th Kinderhook District 8th 1st Claverack Battalion 9th 2nd Claverack Battalion 10th Manor Of Livingston 11th Coxsackie and Groote Imbockt 12th Half Moon and Ballston Districts 13th Saratoga District 14th Hoosack and Schaghtecooke Districts 15th United Districts of Schoharie and Duanesburgh 16th Cambridge District 17th Kings District (This was from the Canaan/Chatham area of present Columbia County) Hope that this helps. 1. Re: [GREENE COUNTY] Van Duesen & Delamater
    2. Hi Peigi, Will try your suggestion this weekend and let you know if it brings up more information. The first VanDeusen to come to this country(circa 1623) was a miller, my husband's great grandfather was a miller and the house we live in was the home of the owner of a gristmill just across our dirt road. When I first started to create a screen name and everything else I wanted was taken, I looked out the window and it was "born". Of course someone had the name fully spelled out, but out of desperation of I took what I could get. peigi mulligan <pmulligan@hvc.rr.com> wrote: Linda, Let me know how it works.
