    3. Zimmerman, please see my posting today about the booklet I have issued on the 6000 acre James Barker Patent at Cairo and Durham. One of the inheritors was a Benjamin Olmsted daughter by the name of Catherine. Catherine's husband is reported by the Court in 1821 as Henry Ossencup - The 1912 Olmsted family volume lists her husband as Gilbert. I have not located this family in 1820-1830 in the counties along the Susquehanna River in New York or Pennsylvania. What information do you have on Osincup, a spelling I have used in searching the 1820 and 1830 census? I have no clue what happened to her 200 acres she inherited from "The Patroon." ----- Original Message ----- From: <V10852@aol.com> To: <NYGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 21, 2005 10:42 AM Subject: Re: [GREENE COUNTY] Re: Roll call -- ROBERTSON, Windham, ca. 1860 > Do you know if your Robertson's had any branches in Yates Co. once Ontario > Co. ? 3. Hi Vickie, At this point I haven't been able to identify either the parents or any possible siblings of George Robertson. My only clue is that he was born in Nova Scotia, and I have a few possibilities of Robertsons who emigrated Nova Scotia > New York. I haven't found any connection with the counties you mention (though that doesn't mean there wasn't one--I just haven't been able to find much on these folks in NY state). In looking at Civil War records for NY, I found about 22 George Robertsons--pretty common name! 1. [GREENE COUNTY] War of 1812
    2. Judy Davison
    3. I have not been able to find very much information about Greene County residents who served in the War of 1812. Israel Huse/Hues was a private in Thornton's Company of Light Artillery, and died in the service, according to an Arkansas Land Warrant issued in 1832 to his heirs. He lived in Durham and I'm wondering if anybody else has family who served with that Company? Or has anybody even heard of it? I've read that some from Greene County served in "Swift's and Dobbin's Regiment" in the War of 1812, which saw duty at Ft. George in the "Province of Upper Canada". But I don't find Israel Huse's name listed anywhere in records. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you. Judy in Georgia

    1. Re: [GREENE COUNTY] Roll call!

    3. I'm finally getting on board the "roll-call train"! Hope all you list readers, and contributors, are not worn out from reading the tremendous amount of responses to Sylvia's call - and still are interested enough to read mine! I read through every single one, just hoping to find some connection. I did find a couple - an inquiry about Tyler/Hotchkiss that I responded to in a separate message, and Sylvia's Lennon family connection, which we have previously discussed together at length. My 4th great-grandparents, Israel and Abigail (Tyler) Huse, have connections to these following families. I am trying to sort some of them out. 1. NOBLE Goodman Noble (d. 7 Aug 1834 in Cairo) was m. to Sarah Tyler. Does anybody know who her parents were? Their son Gideon (1790-1827) m. Rebecca Huse (c 1794-1869). Rebecca was daughter of Israel and Abigail Huse/Hues. Gideon's son Nathaniel (1818-1894) m. Ruth Searing (1824-1910). Ruth was daughter of Amos Jr., who was son of Amos Searing and Hannah (Ferris?), my 4th great-grandparents. Their daughter Sarah/Sally m. Ira Huse, son of Israel and Abigail. 2. SEARING Amos Searing of Columbia Co NY also owned ppty in Greene Co and perhaps lived there a short time. His son Amos Jr and descendants lived in and around Durham for decades. Children of Amos Jr: Ruth m. Nathaniel Noble (one of their daughters named Aravesta) James m. Elizabeth DeSacia Aravesta m. Robert H. Robinson (anybody have info on this family? Aravesta/Arvesta name came down my family line, too) Almeron m. Sophia Kerr (son Everett b. 1870 d. 1948, desc. may have genealogy info) Amos S. (nfi) Almira (1834-1841) William (nfi) Richard m. Theresa Bush Sally "SERRIN", daughter of Amos Searing Sr, was my 3rd great-grandmother. Her mother's name was Hannah. I am trying to resolve conflicting information about Hannah, who I believe was the daughter of Timothy Ferris and Ruth Hubbard. However, other online information indicates she might be daughter of a Thomas Gilbert and Mary Booth of New Haven Co CT. Also seeking identity of Amos' previous wife (or wives). He died 1808 and is buried in Krum Cemetery in Hillsdale, Columbia Co NY, but his wife Hannah remained in Durham her entire life. 3. EVERETT Hannah Searing almost certainly was previously married to an Everett, and had a son Samuel Everett whose wife was Anna St. John (dau of Abraham), according to Stonebridge Cemetery records, which show Hannah and Anna buried next to each other. Seeking any information about this Everett line. Are there any known descendants of Samuel? Could his father have been named Richard? 4. LENNON Sylvia and I both have an interest in this family. Robert Lennon's daughter Mary m. Orin Huse who was, I believe, the brother of Ira, son of Israel. Daniel Lennon (1783-1874) m. Elizabeth Noble, dau of Goodman and Sarah (Tyler) Noble. Robert and Daniel Lennon were apparently brothers. Below are my research notes for Orin/Orrin Huse, showing interesting naming patterns that I think might indicate a relationship to my Huse family of Durham. "Speculation at this point - more research is needed, but I'm fairly certain this Orrin is a brother to Ira. 1. His name is spelled "Hughs" in the 1830 Durham census (as is Ira's). 2. Ira named two sons Ira and Orrin. 3. Ira's Aunt Rebecca Hues Noble (wife of Gideon) named two sons Ira Hues Noble and Orrin Noble. 4. Orrin is obviously a name that runs in this family line. It remains to be seen whether proof exists that this Orrin is the 3rd of Isreal Huse/Hues' young sons in the 1810 census (the others being Ira and Josiah). "Orrin Hues / Hughs m. Mary Lennon in Greene Co NY. Both of them are related to the Noble family, which gives even more weight to this relationship. Mary's Uncle Daniel Lennon was m. to Elizabeth Noble, the sister of Gideon. Orrin's Aunt Rebecca Hues Noble was Gideon's wife. Furthermore, Orrin's age is right to be a son of Isreal Hues - who was the only Hues / Huse living in Durham NY at the time. jd 9/26/02." Aft. 1830 he may have removed "to the West". HUSE Still seeking proof that my 4th great-grandfather Israel Huse was the son of Bodwell of East Haven, New Haven CT (in Freehold, Albany Co NY 1790 Census). This would be a significant genealogical discovery since at least two Huse family books indicate Bodwell's son Israel died unmarried and without issue, by drowning (reference is to New Haven V.R., no date given) My 3rd great-grandfather Ira Huse, had a son named Israel Ferris Huse/Hughes. His biographical sketch in "Biographical History of Northeastern Ohio, Embracing the Counties of Ashtabula, Geauga and Lake": The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, IL 1893, pages 869-870 says his grandfather was Israel Hughes "of Connecticut" who died in the service (he died in War of 1812). Did Israel die by drowning? I don't know - but his only brother, Collins Huse, had a son Collins who died at sea Dec 1815, also according to New Haven V.R. These two deaths probably occurred within a year or so of each other. Could there be confusion by whoever contributed the record, probably long after the family's removal to NY ca 1788-1790? Israel may be the other male, age 16+, living in Bodwell Huse's home in 1790 census. He married Abigail Tyler in 1792 in Greenville Presbyterian Church, Freehold (both said to be of Durham, which was formed partly from Freehold). Bodwell's two daughters Anna (wife of Samuel Brown, m. 1784 in New Haven CT), and Rebekah (wife of 1-Thomas Howell, m. 1788 in New Haven CT, then 2-Josiah Moulton) were also in Greene Co at the time). I would welcome any relevant information about these Brown and Howell families. Children of Israel and Abigail Huse: i. Rebecca m. Gideon Noble ii. Ira m. Sarah/Sally Serrin/Searing iii. Desire m. a Mr. Finch (I think it's possible, but not proven, that she is the Desire "HALL", said to be the 2nd of the 4 wives of Ezra Finch, who lived in Athens. I cannot find any other reference in Finch genealogies to a wife named Desire. Family historian in Geauga Co (grandniece of Desire) said she "died of shock from a near drowning in the Hudson River". According to Baptist Church Records in Catskill, in 1824 a Desire Huse "removed from Catskill Baptist Church" (possibly to marry?); per Sylvia Hasenkopf's Greene Co NY website. iv. daughter (possibly named Minerva or Miranda) - nfi v. Josiah M. Huse m. 1) Esther Rickerson (?); 2) Clarissa Ellis - whose parents were Peter Ellis and Clarissa Hollenbeck. Josiah was a carpenter who moved back and forth between Schoharie, Albany and Greene Counties. vi. Orrin/Orin m. Mary Lennon (see above). Hope this is of interest to somebody. I have many, many more notes. Comments, corrections, etc., very welcome. Thanks! Judy in Georgia

    3. Sylvia, Probably not anything that would be useful. I do have the parents information of Edgar C.: Charles E. SHUFELT, the son of David Bellinger Shufelt and Rachel ______, was born about 1868. This is almost certainly the Charles Shufelt who married, about 1902, Nettie B. _________, and lived in Ashland, Greene County, New York, where he was a farmer. He married rather late, at the age of about 33, but quickly made up for lost time as his wife had six children in the first eight years of marriage and thirteen in all in just the first 23 years of marriage. One of the first six children died young. They died in Ashland-Nettie in 1938 and Charles in 1944-and they were buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery (aka Ashland Cemetery). Among the children of Charles and Nettie were: 1) Floyd A. SHUFELT: born about 1903. 2) Clara M. SHUFELT: born about 1904. 3) Clarence E. SHUFELT: born about 1905. 4) Ethel SHUFELT: born about 1906. 5) Albert J. SHUFELT: born about 1909. 6) Dorothy SHUFELT: born about 1910. 7) Sidney F. SHUFELT: born about 1912. 8) Elizabeth SHUFELT: born about 1914. 9) Edgar C. SHUFELT: born about 1916. 10) Louise SHUFELT: born about 1919. 11) Muriel L. SHUFELT: born about 1921. 12) Mildred F. SHUFELT: born about 1924. For a moment there I had a thought that perhaps Clara M. married a Delamater but a quick check showed the following: Clara M. SHUFELT, the daughter of Charles E. Shufelt and Nettie B ______, was born about 1904. She married about 1923, Harold Finch, born about 1902. At the time of the 1930 census, they lived at Windham, Green County, New York, where Harold was a foreman in a creamery, and they had four children. Also living with them at the time were Clara's sister Ethel and her brother Floyd who worked as a laborer in a creamery; probably the same creamery in which Harold was a foreman. Clara and Harold Finch were still together at the time of the 1930 census so if she married a Delamater it was later. I don't have anything else on Edgar C. In fact I didn't have his exact birthdate until now. Thanks! I sure wish I could be of some further help because I've watched you over the years being so helpful to others. Have you tried contacting Cliff Lamere lately. I think he's heavily into the Delamaters. His web page remains at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ I think I have his up to date email address on my other PC. If you need it give me a shout. Regards, Jim Groat -----Original Message----- From: Sylvia Hasenkopf [mailto:esi@francomm.com] Jim, do you have anything on the Edgar C. Schufelt b. Sept 15, 1916 and Clara Delamater connection?

    1. [GREENE COUNTY] Tyler, Hotchkiss (Roll Call)
    2. Judy Davison
    3. Martha, I'm interested in your Tyler/Hotchkiss connection. My 4th great-grandmother was Abigail Tyler (m. Israel Hues/Huse), who lived in Durham. I've been trying to prove her connection to Tyler ancestors for several years. Her husband died abt 1812 and she remained a widow until she died, about 40 years later. My research notes are copied below, if you are interested. "Abigail (TYLER) Hues died 30 Sep 1852, according to cemetery records, and is buried in Stonebridge Cemetery in East Durham, with her probable brother Phineas Tyler, Jr., his son Jehiel, and a Capt. James Tyler. Although I have not found a birth record for Abigail, I have conferred with Jane Bouley, the town historian of Branford, New Haven Co, CT and presented my circumstantial evidence to her. I have also communicated with a Harrison family historian who is writing a book dealing especially with "Harrison women". Both of them agree with me that Abigail is almost certainly the daughter of Phinehas Tyler, of Goshen, Litchfield Co and Branford, New Haven Co CT, who removed to Durham with brothers Elisha and David, and father David, Sr. about 1784-1786. "Phinehas Tyler's wife was Abigail HARRISON, the daughter of John and Desire (FARRINGTON) Harrison. Abigail Tyler's dob, about Sept 1773, would fit in with other children of Phinehas and Abigail Tyler. It's also logical that Abigail would be named for her mother and would name a daughter after her grandmother, Desire Farrington Harrison. Abigail's son Ira named one of his sons Harrison Tyler Hues. I am very thankful to both of the above-mentioned Branford historians for the detailed genealogies they provided to me, with documentation, for Abigail's ancestors. "My circumstantial evidences are outlined below. Further discussion or comments are welcome. 1. Her son Ira named a son Harrison Tyler Hues. Abigail Tyler's mother was Abigail Harrison. 2. Abigail is buried in the Stone Bridge Cemetery plot with her probable brother Phineas, Jr. and his son Jehiel. 3. Abigail is of the right age to be a daughter of Phineas, Sr. 4. Elisha Tyler (possibly her uncle) lived in the next household to Isreal Hues' probable father, Bodwell Huse, in the 1790 census for Freehold, Albany Co NY. 5. Phinehas, Sr's son Jacob had sons named Calvin and Miles. A Calvin and a Miles Tyler witnessed a deed drawn up for Ira Huse (son of Abigail). If Jacob was Abigail's brother, then Calvin and Miles Tyler were first cousins to Ira. Ira's move to Geauga Co, OH in about 1834-35 may have been connected to Jacob's move there, which took place about 1835. 6. Two of Abigail's sons, Ira and Josiah, are mentioned in Phineas Tyler Jr's will which is about 100 pages long." The information below has also made me curious about whether there is a blood-tie between my Huse/Tyler families and a Hotchkiss family. I also have a different family line with Hotchkiss connection at an earlier time in Cheshire, New Haven Co CT. From Western New York Land Transactions, 1804-1824 by Karen E.Livsey copyright 1991 Genealogical Publishing Company, Library of Congress Catalogue Number 90-85226 (pages 182-183): Miles Hotchkiss - 7 Apr 1817, Lot 40 Sect 00 Twp 03 Range 12, D-O Ref-Pg=495-0044 Ira Hues - 10 Apr 1817, purchased the rest of this lot (is this Ira of East Durham NY?) William Howell 2nd - 24 Apr 1817, Lot 21 Sect 00 Twp 15 Range 09, D-O Ref-Pg=495-0041 John Brown - 4 Oct 1817, purchased the rest of this lot - see pg 0042 (is he also a cousin?) Ira Huse's father had a sister Rebekah who m. Thomas Howell. Their son, William Thomas Howell, was b. 11 Feb 1788. He and Ira Hues, both of Durham, were 1st cousins. Ira's father also had a sister Anna who m. Samuel Brown. I don't find a son named John in listing of their children, so not sure what connection is to this John Brown, if any. A Samuel Hotchkiss lived 2 doors away from Bodwell Huse (Ira's probable grandfather) in the 1790 census. Miles Hotchkiss (who is his father?) appears in the 1820 Census in Chatauqua Co, but Ira Huse does not. If this Ira is the man who was my 3rd great-grandfather, he obviously did not stay there, and perhaps never lived there at all, only buying the land on speculation. He was back in Durham, Greene Co in 1830 (spelled "Hughs"), then removed to Geauga Co OH abt 1834/35. Wondering how, or if, Hotchkiss family from Durham NY is related to Huse/Tyler families. Abigail Tyler and Israel Hues ("Hewis") were m. in Greenville Presbyterian Church 1792 (record on Sylvia's website). There are four other Tylers whose marriages are transcribed from church records on the website: 7 Nov 1790 - Josiah Woodward and Jane Tyler, both of Freehold 27 Feb 1792 - Timothy Tyler 2nd and Cynthia Peck, both of Freehold 2 Jan 1794 - Hezekiah Tyler and Abigail Brownson, both of Freehold 23 Feb 1801 - Joseph Jewell, Jr. and Desire Tyler, both of Durham (town formed from a part of Freehold in 1800). Do you have any information about them? Please let me know if any of these names sound familiar. If you can supply more detail about your own connections, I may be able to help. I've been working with these family names for a long time and have lots of additional notes. Thanks! 3. I am currently traveling so I don't have my records with me, but I am also researching HOTCHKISS & TYLER. I have previously made post concerning Augustus HOTCHKISS & Ann TYLER. While I haven't been able to find any proof, I have reason to believe that Augustus HOTCHKISS married Ann TYLER c1815. I am attempting to find proof of the marriage and that Ann is the daughter of Elisha TYLER; I have indicators that lead me to this conclusion. Augustus was in Waterville (Hobart), Delaware County in 1818 when there was the death of his child. I can find no trace of the lineage of Augustus HOTCHKISS. I have contacted the HOTCHKISS Family Association and the only record they have of him is that he married Ann TYLER; however, their records do not indicate the source of this information. Census records indicate that Augustus was born in Connecticut c1795 and Ann was born in Albany County, NY c1795. My travel plans get me back to our home in Houston, TX on Friday; that is of course if hurricane "Rita" doesn't interfer.
