    2. Martha Hotchkiss
    3. Judy, George and Lydia were married at the Greenville Presbyterian Church 19 Oct 1790. Her name is listed at Tayler. I checked for Tayler/Taylor in Freehold and found nothing. A genealogist at the Hotchkiss Family Association believes that the name is Tyler. I need to contact her again for a source. The association is preparing a book on the descendants of John Hotchkiss and and this is George's line. I have been in contact with them this year. Lydia was born about 1774 and died before 1832. George was born in 1772 near Cheshire, CT and died in 1832. George and Lydia lived at Durham and are buried at Stonebridge Cemetery. I have a feeling that all these people came from Cheshire to Freehold after the Revolutionary War, and that they are very inter-related. Robert, son of George and Lydia married Loly Cook. Loly's mother was George Hotchkiss's sister. There must be many more just like this. You have been helpful. Please let me know what else I can send you? 1. Roll Call - Tompkins with Hornbeck
    2. Gary Dufel
    3. My most exasperating dead end is a Sophia Tompkins (one census record gave her name as Eunice - either an error or she was Sophia Eunice Tompkins). Anyway, she married Jacob Hornbeck and they went to live on the Denning/Neversink border in Sullivan County for many years. Jacob was born about 1816 and served and died in the Civil War. Sophia applied for a widow's pension and claimed she was married at Chapman's Hotel in Prattsville on August 3, 1844 in a ceremony officiated by Rev. Orlif g. Hedstrom. I've seen no proof of this and I don't think Sophia had proof either since she had to get friends to certift that fact. All census records state she was born in Greene County, and although the different census records give different years she was born (sigh!), the best consensus in a birth year of about 1826-1828 - making her a pretty young bride. My problem is I have never been able to connect Sophia with any Tompkins family. I searched the southern Greene census records to try to spot a family with a female of the right age in 1830 or 1840 census, and did get two possibilities. My best hope is that someone has records of the Rev. Hedstrom (perhaps a traveling minister). A Tompkins researcher alerted me to a Sophia Tompkins born in 1818 in Mt. Pleasant, NY (The researcher thought this was a small crossroads in northern Ulster County, but more likely it is in Westchester County since most of teh Tompkins on this person's list were from there.) Ot would make her closer in age to her husband and a bit older when she married, but unless she consistently lied to census takers or to friends who then gave the data to census takers, I can't account for this difference in years. (However - if some Tompkins researcher could account for the Sophia born in 1818, it might be useful too). I have noticed a number of Tompkins postings in this roll call period. Anyone with a Sophia (or Eunice) or even a missing unnamed daughter from around 1825-1828? Green, Ulster and Sullivan Counties seem to be a black hole of my family. They seem to just show up and then live a while without ever leaving clues of where they came from.

    3. My interest in Greene County began with researching my ancestor, Daniel Angle (1753-1840), of Lexington. He had the distinction of attaining a record-long lifespan for the area – his gravestone says that he was 107 years old. This was an error, though, because he “only” lived 87 years, as evidenced by a baptism record, military information, pension and other documents. Daniel Angle was born in Hildesheim, Germany, and was originally named Johanne Daniel Engelke. The name was shortened to Engel, and then Angle. He came to the U.S. to fight with the German auxiliary troops (often referred to as “Hessians”) that were hired by the British, and was captured at the Battle of Saratoga. He deserted the prison camp and, in 1781, he joined the American Forces as a soldier in the Massachusetts Continental Army. Angle was honorably discharged at West Point at the conclusion of the War, and received a pension. I also have Chase, Whitcomb, and other ancestry from Greene County. I look forward to the next visit to beautiful Greene County – it’s been two years since we’ve been there. 1. Roll Call - Dunagan/Dunnigan etc., Underhill, Kerr
    2. Gary Dufel
    3. One of my dead ends is a Michael Dunagan, also spelled Dunnigan, Donegan etc. He first shows up in the Hunter Census in 1830 with wife and 2 young daughters. He is listed as having been born in Ireland and she in New York. In 1840, he is still in Hunter with a larger family, and in 1850 the family is in Olive, Ulster County and of course now the names of most family names can be read. By combining all the census records, Michael was born about 1804, and since he married a lady from New York and they had two young children by 1830 it would be logical that he was in the country by 1826 ish. But did he come as a wee lad or a young adult? No clue and no evidence he had parents or siblings in the area. In fact there only seems to be one other Dunagan family in the Catskills that long ago, and they are listed in several of the area histories so they are well documented. By the 1955 census Michael had died. I learned his wife was Eleanor Underhill. I have found no vital records for the family - no church records, birth or confirmation records, no clear idea if the family was catholic or protestant, no wills, no ships records, no burial records in Greene or Ulster. There is one record in the Green County web site stating that a Mr. Kerr kived in "the Michael Dunagan house in Hunter" (if memory serves me correctly that record was in about 1856.) A Kerr married Eleanor Underhill Dunagan's sister, so perhaps this was a brother-in-law of Michael. The Kerr's were also from Ireland arriving early in the 1800's. By the 1850's there are many more Dunagan's of various spellings in the Catskills, probably coming as part of the potatoe famine, but my line was here earlier and no clue if any of the later folks had any relationship - seems remote. I tried some Irish sites but the spelling can vary so much and the name does exist throughout the country so not much chance of hitting pay dirt unless I find a town in Ireland to look. I do have quite a bit of data on his descendants, many of whom stayed in the area or went to nearby Bradford, Pa. Has anyone come across this family, or have any ideas for remaining research? I'd be glad to share my stuff if anyone has a Dunagan linking into their family.

    1. James Barker Patent

    3. After three plus years of obtaining and analyzing deeds from Greene County, New York I finally put the results together in a booklet titled "The Barker, Dederick, Ecklor, Olmsted, Salisbury, and Taylor Grandchildren Inherit the Patroon's Estate: The James Barker Patent at Cairo and Durham in Greene County, New York." In the process I learned that James and Elizabeth Barker had 35 grandchildren, of which 29 were living at the time of Barker's death in November 1820. Besides the surnames of the grandchildren, the spouses of the grandchildren brought these names into the family: Agard, Calkins, Cole, Cole, DeWitt, Finkle, Hallenbeck, Hubbell, Huyck, Knickerbocker, Kortz, Kortz, Ossencup, Person, Rowe, Stevens, Telfair G, Van Steenbergh, Vought, White, Woodruff, and Wooster. The booklet is 32 double-sided pages, with indices of the family members. A chapter is devoted to each family plus the story of the Barker arrival and purchase of land before the Revolution. There are four appendices including a transcription of the land deed that names all of the grandchildren of James and Elizabeth (Wooer) Barker who inherited the land. I checked at the Post Office. It will cost about $1.50 to mail the booklet. I am asking $10 for the booklet. With the postage it totals $11.50. Proceeds will be used to help in the restoration of the family cemetery as set forth in Appendix D. If you are interested in the booklet contact me, Gene Eiklor at geneil@geneseo.net. or at my home address Gene Eiklor, 417 Oakwood Place, Geneseo, IL 61254-1911. The booklet which shows the descendants of the children of James and Elizabeth for three generations: their children were Thomas I. Barker, Sarah, Mary, John, Nancy, Elizabeth and Jane. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.344 / Virus Database: 267.11.3/107 - Release Date: 9/20/2005

    3. Thanks Sylvia! That fills out the history somewhat before I go about a "hope to be" final renumbering and draft. Then it's trying to find a reliable printer/binder. By-the way--This is not a money making venture nor do I ever hope to recoup my expenses. It's a lifelong ambition that I'm fulfilling in the twilight years, much as "The Long Groat Line" was but that was not so late in life. I may even attempt a redo of that if I ever get done with the Shufelts. Speaking of Virginia, we meet a great many such people as we try to do our research. I read somewhere on one of the lists where a guy said he was imbedding errors in his GEDCOMs so he could "catch" anyone trying to "Steal" his research! <grin> Just what we need, more fiction than fact on the World Wide trash heap. 3. Hi Sylvia, I'm researching George Robertson, b. ca. 1815 in Nova Scotia, who had a son, George W. Robertson, b. ca. 1847 in NY. Looking over the Civil War records, I didn't find any good age match for either of them, at least not with enough detail to feel there was a match. Since the older George apparently died by 1870, I had thought maybe he was in the war. I actually ordered a record for a George W. Robertson from some archive in NY, can't recall which one, but it wasn't my guy. 3. You mentioned in your list of names that you were looking for QUICK- just wondering which ones. Yesterday I discovered there was a Quick family in my line, through marriage. James E. QUICK, born about 1842, died 4 Mar 1878, buried in Hunter. He married Julia E. SMITH, daughter of Bela SMITH and Margaret VAN ORDEN, before 1867. They had 2 children that I know of: Mary QUICK born about 1867 and Frank H. QUICK born about 1871 Any connection to your Quick family? Thanks, Susan Malone :-)
