Hi Jackie--I corresponded with Mildred Schanz of Montana back in 1989-- she is a desc'd. of Eliphalet Lord, father of Asa. She has 5 wives listed for Asa; Polly Felt, Polly Towner, Margaret Johnson, Catherine Hellicus and Sally--?. Will be happy to send[snail mail!] family record sheets and other material she sent to me. Hi Shelly, While I have a few Hubbards and Kirtlands in my database none seem to match up with yours. Maybe somebody else will come up with something. My research tends to focus on riverine Greene County, i. e, Catskill, Athens, Coxsackie and New Baltimore. Some others only seem to research "hill" families west of there. But if something looks familiar we're usually all ready to help. Hi all, Roger A. Newman Newman and maybe Norton are the names. hope I don't send this twice, but??? Best I can guess, Newman is from Connecticut and before the Revelution many of them started moving west, by the late 1800's many were in Greene County. None today I guess, as they all moved on, same with Connecticut. After the War of 1812 my gg-grandfather[vet], James likely moved through Greene Co. and ended up in what is today Lanesboro, the NE courner of Pa. His son Martin married a Norton and moved back to Oak Hill in Greene Co. for quite a few years. My grandfather Adin was born there, and the homested is still there. I only found one Newman stone in Oak Hill Cemetery. There were other Newmans living there at the time and I'd like to find out if they were related. If the fact that Norton Hill is just down the road a bit is important, I don't know? Martin moved a lot and ended up in Chippewa Falls Wisconsin, there were other Newmans from Greene County that lived around there also. Any, that is, "any" conection is very appreciated. There were tons of Newmans all over the place once, they apparently all moved to Mars and left no forwarding address. Sorry, I am traveling so this is not my computer, I am having a terrible time with it, but want to make roll-call. Along with that, I can't type, can't spell and my grammer is hurting, maybe thats why the Newmans don't answer back? I was in Greene County, Durham, Oak Hill, last Sept., I live in Illinois, and would like to thank all the kind, not related, people who helped me while I was there. I'd move back if I could. Thanks also to Sylvia for this sight and hard work, it's for us all. Roger A. Hi Elaine, I think we've corresponded before. Just in case, I'm descended from the Palatine Groat/Gradt and Dederich families (with all the varied spellings). Of course there are innumerable connections with the Brandow, Decker, Collier, Vosburgh, etc. By-the-way, Walpurga is a given name, not a surname. She was the wife of Johannes Groat (Gradt), the original 1710 Palatine immigrant. Her last name is unknown. Where do you fit in and do you have any specific questions? Perhaps I can be of help. Meanwhile, you might want to take a look at my web page: http://home.midsouth.rr.com/groatline/Index.html Regards, Jim Groat -----Original Message----- From: elainedecker [mailto:elainedecker@frontiernet.net] Sent: Monday, September 26, 2005 12:39 PM To: NYGREENE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: RE:[greene county] Roll Call I am a DECKER. Raymond, I am seeking Richard CLARK - Christina DUTCHER information. They lived for a time in Prattsville and Coxsockie around 1850's, maybe earlier. They supposedly had 14 children and 9 have been accounted for. I know very little about Richard Clark ancestors and nothing about Christina's. Sharon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Raymond W. Hi all. I have an ancestor, Avesta Wright, who attended Eastman Business College in Poukeepsie, New York in 1885. There are surely a lot of references to the college, but I am interested in knowing what courses were taught, what certification or degree was offered, etc. The autograph book of this woman has the most beautiful signatures from other students. I know the college taught calligraphy. Thanks for any information. Susan Susan Smith-Hunter Smith-Hunter Gallery 4234 Rte 7 Ethan Allen Highway Ferrisburgh, Vt. 05456-9778 Email: fineart@sover.net
Oops. :) I left out a couple. (More than a couple, but these will do for now.) HOMMEL: descendants of the 1710 Palatine immigrant Hermanus Hommel. LEGG: descendants of William Legg (d. 1710) and Susannah Marret (many variants of her surname) of Kingston. Some descendants ended up in Greene County, including my ancestress. Peggy

I wonder if any of the following could be clues to finding out where in Greene Co., Jonathan's was born? There were so many small border changes.... This is what I have about the 1st land Jonathan bought in Delaware Co....I had asssumed he had grown up in Greene Co....the census says he was born there...thanks for any help.... Jonathan Griffin's occupation on our copy of the 1850 Federal Census is "Harness maker and tanner & currier, Carriage trimmer and trunk maker". The numbers after that are the years the person lived in the Town. It could indicate that Deborah is a second wife. The occupation for Jonathan in 1860 is peddlar. The children are Julian A. Kim, You might want to work your way, one at a time, in more detail, through your list as I suspect there are some that would spark some interest. As a general aside to everyone participating in the roll call - the lists of surnames are interesting, but actually putting what you have of a lineage up here is more interesting. We enjoy group projects and if you spark some interest in something you'll get to see how other people work. Hello! What a response this roll call has gotten! I'm swamped with emails to sift through...so here's another! Hello Everyone! I'm looking for the following surnames, many from Greene County and vicinity: RICE VAN DERZEE TOLLEY PARSONS SUTHERLAND/SOUTHERLAND BRONK DENSMORE CHAPMAN MEAD PALMER My mother was born and raised in Greene County, in New Baltimore. Several of my ancestors, including my maternal grandparents, are buried in the Riverside and Chestnut Lawn Cemeteries. I have only managed to trace these surname lines back to about the early/mid 1800's. I'm also researching the following surnames not necessarily related to Greene Co. NY: HUBBARD, AUERBACH, TOLER, CORNELL, TEMPLETON, PERRY, PENNINGTON, HONE, HAYES, ECHOLS, MCCOMB, GUY, RUNKLE, AREHART, NEEDHAM, ROUDABUSH, HUNTER, and CARTER. I'd be happy to share what I have gathered with anyone who thinks we may have a connection somewhere! Thanks, Kim Echols

Hi Susan, Family Chronicle Magazine <www.familychronicle.com> PO Box 194, Niagara Falls, NY 14304 has published two books on the subject: "Dating Old Photographs 1840-1929" ($12) and "More Dating Old Photographs" ($16). The price is $22 if you purchase both books at the same time. I recommend paying by check, as credit card orders are processed through their Canadian office and you'll end up paying considerably more. Their bimonthly magazine often contains articles on this subject as well. These books probably contain dated examples that can be compared to your photo. If the name and address of the photographer is on the cardboard mount, you may be able to locate the studio in a city directory and determine what years it was in business. The photo's backing material will also help to date it. Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes and cartes-de-visite or cabinet cards were produced during certain periods of time, but technology was slow to reach rural areas, so some of these older methods were still in use years after city studios had moved on to something better. Clothing, hairstyles, and the presence or absence of beards, mustaches and sideburns are also used to date photos. Items in the background can also help. I have a photo that shows a building on which someone had tacked a theater poster. Under strong magnification I was able to read the title of the movie. An online search told me when the film had been released, giving me an approximate timeframe. A tedious week by week search though the local newspaper told me when the film was shown at a local theater. Patricia Morrow, Windham Town Historian >Patricia- A week or so ago I tried sending some ancestor photos to the list, but I think they didn't survive the translation. I will send again. My question is whether you might know anyone who is an expert in analyzing old photos as to their age. I have a photo of a male ancestor that I would very much like to know more about. Susan
