I guess I didn't phrase my question properly. By deeds etc., I meant those we've paid to get for our genealogical research. I wouldn't want them to burn up in a fire or be lost in a flood such as Katrina. Thanks. I would be interested in information about Catherine Hellicus, as I only have 4 wives for Asa. He seems to have been very unlucky in the marriage arena.... I have that he married Polly Felt on Jan. 27,1805 and that he married Mary M. Towner in 1810. I have Margaret Johnson and Sally listed, but no details on the marriages. I have that Mary and Asa had 5 children between 1815 and 1825, two of whom were twins. I have that he had 3 children with Polly Felt, and I decend from her son Ephraim; however, I don't see how the birth date on the second son, Alvin, could be right as it is Dec. 1810 and either that or the marriage date to Mary has to be wrong. I don't have any children for Margaret or Sally, nor do I know Sally's last name. Do you know that he was a drummer boy in the war of 1812 and his drum is in the Pratt Museum in Prattsville, Greene Co., NY? I went there to see it this summer, but it was "in storage". Quite disappointing. I would appreciate any information you can share and will share any that I have that could be helpful to you. Thanks! You don't want to put anything in a safe deposit box that your family might need to settle your estate. As soon as the bank knows someone has died they lock out everyone and sometimes it takes years for heirs to get the box unlocked. Your will needs to be in your home. I keep mine in a fireproof box with my deeds, life insurance policies, etc. A friend of mine also keeps a copy taped to the wall next to his washing machine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara Craddock" <goldbabe@tampabay.rr.com> To: <NYGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 28, 2005 7:55 PM Subject: [GREENE COUNTY] question > I have a question for the list: where do you keep all your deeds, wills, and > vital records? One of the problems is that my William Augustus Strong died at Black Rock, NY while in the Army in 1814. He migrated to Atwater, OH in 1806. His wife had gone back to Durham, CT and died there also in 1814 and is buried among the Durham Strong's of the era. His son, my G grandfather was orphaned in Ohio. He was sent "East" (I assume CT) for a couple of years education and then was bound out to a farmer in Ohio. He may have returned later to NY to learn the trade of building barns. While it is interesting to track later families, it is unlikely to solve the big issue - the parents of William Augustus Strong (1783- 1814). Ralph Strong Glen Burnie, MD
Hi Lance and Sylvia Have you been in touch with Ken Calkins? I hope this address is still valid? _kencalkins@prodigy.net_ (mailto:kencalkins@prodigy.net) . My mom's maiden name is Calkins, and I just happen to have Ken's compilation - CALKINS FAMILY IN AMERICA - published in 2000. I scanned through it last night and found only two named William Calkins, born around 1787, who were lacking additional information. Page 32, William Calkins, b. abt. 1788, Sharon, Litchfield, CT, son of Justice Calkins and Hannah Heath. Justice was married twice 1) Sarah Eliot 2) Hannah Heath His known children are: Justice, Silas, Anna, Sylvanus, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Obadiah, Sarah, William (above). It looks like all were born in Sharon, CT. Page 46, William Calkins, b. Nov. 25, 1786, Northeast, Dutchess Co., NY, son of Elisha Calkins and Dorcas Van Dusen It looks like Elisha moved to Salsbury, CT after William was born. OOH, I didn't notice this until now?????? William's youngest brother's name is Ira. He was b. Jun 10, 1805 and d. May 1, 1812. Unfortunately, no birth or death locations are listed. This might be worth researching!!! He died August 16, 1830, aged 43. His wife, Betsey Barker died May 8, 1826, aged 34y. They are listed on the same stone as Ira Calkins and his wife, likely a son. I checked and there was no will for William - no big surprise as he was only 43 and probably did not anticipate that he would die so young. Now, it is very probable that William had children, and may, in fact have had another wife after Betsey died. It would definitely be worthwhile to check the Letters of Administration to see if papers were filed as William likely died intestate (without a will). His heirs would be listed as well as a disposition of his estate/debts. Also, there is a strong possibilty that William had minor children (under the age of 21) therefore there should be guardianship papers as well, even if there was a wife (women were rarely guardians at that timeframe) Don't know where you live, but the documents would be at the Vedder Library. I wouldn't rely too heavily on those CDs. I've heard that they have a failure rate even higher than other types of floppies. As long as the original documents are in a safe place (like a fireproof metal box or your safety deposit box -- the ones you get for genealogy wouldn't be a problem even if the box is sealed at death like they are in NY) it's fine to use the computer disks as a backup with multiple copies on different disks or different types of disks. Hi Cindy, Thanks for pointing out all this info. Yes, I have been in touch with Ken Calkins in the past. At that time we were unable to draw any conclusions about the various Williams. But, now that I see the Durham cemetery records, the William who died in 1830 seems likely to be the one who was born 1786, son of Elisha and Dorcas (Van Deusen) Calkins (I too noticed the son and brother Ira as very interesting). I have several candidates for a William Calkins who fathered my James, and this has been one of them. I am now pursuing this line further to see what develops. My James's name may have come from his mother's side, since William of Durham married a granddaughter of James Barker, the patroon. I hesitate to chime in because I jusat have one fact, and no follow up. In the hills above Vesper, Town of Tully, Onondaga Co NY there is a Strong Road. It was named for an Ansel Strong who bought a lot of land in 1844, and sold it off in sections, the last to a William Strong in 1867. I believe my new house built in 1993 is on part of the land he owned back then. I have never studied his family, but you might find records in Syracuse related to him good luck. Thanks for the reply. I have run across Anson Strong from the great Greene County web page. I have run down all the Strong's I can find in the Two Durham's who were having families in the 1793 era. I think John Strong, Selah's brother spent some time in Durham, NY and I saw him listed someplace as one of the revolutionary war soldiers from Greene County. The rest of the Durham Strong's who were of the age to have families in the era have families that would conflict with William's birth. John married a year or so after William's birth and I have guessed that he might have had a prior marriage or arrangement. I have looked at the female Strong's also and it doesn't appear that an illegitimate birth would fit either. William was sworn as a freeman in Durham, CT in 1803. Thanks for the hint. Ralph, Possibly the same Strong family you are researching in Durham township, is the Strong's that lived in Cornwallville (Town of Durham). Strong Road, named from an early Strong family, is just outside of the town and a few early (one definitely late1700-early 1800's) homes are still to be found along the road. The earliest on the left as you enter the road from County Route 20. Anson Strong came to the township of Durham about 1796 and nephew of Selah Strong, one of the settlers of Meeting House Hill, near the town of Durham. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, Justice of the Peace, Town Clerk and school teacher. He was married to Sally Butler and they had 6 children. Hell0, I am completely green at transcribing but if I can be taught the ins and outs, I would like to help also.
Dear Sylvia, Sorry it has taken so long to post this message. Has been in my heart to do it since I got back from NY. However, lots of family things and wedding planning and a recent trip to Indiana got in the way. I want everyone to know what a WONDERFUL time Dan and I had when we visited the Catskills. Meeting my cousin Fran and husband John Monahan was a most delightful and enjoyable time. It was one of the best things I can list in my life. They were so warm and loving to us. Fran took us to all the grave sites we knew of and I touched my past and my family. Fran was a real trooper taking us all over. The next wonderful thing was meeting Sylvia. You don't know how much we enjoyed visiting with you and the fact you took time from your busy life to come by and see us. I could have talked to you for days. And folks she is a lot younger than I thought . She has such a vast store house of knowledge and focus on the geneology that I expected to meet someone older. She is also quite cute. Fran took us to the Vedder library and eveyone there was such a help going above and beyond for us. While there I got to meet Jane Freese. Jane you will always have my gratitude for getting Fran and I together. If it wasn't for you we wouldn't have found each other. The food at Sylvia's mother in laws Inn was terrific. As well as the other places we stopped. To sum it all up, it was the trip my heart was longing for and I was not disappointed at all. The only disappointment was we had onlly a few days to stay. Perhaps, next time it will be longer. Thanks and love to everyone I met especially Sylvia. Virginia Sanok Love is Silence when Words would Hurt. __________________________________ Yahoo! Lance, I find that there is a tombstone for William Calkins, in Stonebridge cemetery in the Town of Durham. If you are interested in acquiring my services to do this research please email me privately at esi@francomm.com Sylvia ----- Original Message ----- From: <lance.ware@cox.net> To: <NYGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 27, 2005 4:22 PM Subject: [GREENE COUNTY] James CALKINS, b. 1819 >I believe I've posted this before in the past in some form or other, but >got no response at that time. I believe Ive posted this before in the past in some form or other, but got no response at that time. Since one of the listers has suggested that we post details and maybe someone might be able to work on it, here it is again with the latest info I have. James CALKINS, born 18 Jun 1819 in Greene County (according to 1855 New York census). He is found in the 1850 and 1855 census in Hudson, Columbia, NY. Later he moved to Monmouth County, NJ where he died in 1909. He married (1) Elizabeth TEN BROECK, 14 Sep 1842 in Germantown, Columbia, NY, and (2) Sarah ___, ca. 1854. The only CALKINS (or variant) listed in the 1820 census in Greene County is William CALKINS of Durham (3 males <10, 1 males 26-45, 1 females <10, 1 females 26-45, 1 manufacturers), so he is a candidate for the father of my James. Ive been unable to find any further info linking James with William or anyone else in Greene County. James has a death cert, but it does not list his parents. Can anyone tell me anything further about this William CALKINS of Durham? Anyone have any records of a James CALKINS born in Greene County in 1819 or thereabouts? Thanks, Lance Ware
