Welcome to the Tracing your Roots in Greene Co site! The history of New Baltimore is available on the site in a number of places. Start with the subheading Greene Co on the Table of Contents page and explore the sub-sub headings that come up after that. In terms of the ownership of your house in New Baltimore, you would need to visit the County Building on Main St, Catskill, and look up the deed for your house, which will be listed by the name of your parents as the grantee. On that deed you will find the name of the grantor - the person(s) who sold the house to your parents. There will likely be the reference of the previous deed of sale for the house alos on that deed, and then you can look that up and see who sold the house to the folks that sold it to your parents. This process works well until the late 1800's when the practice of recording the previous sale was not followed as a general rule. Then the search is by grantor/grantee name only and can be a little more confusing. If you would prefer, I can do this search for you, for a modest fee. Contact me off list at esi@francomm.com if you are interested. In terms of locating floor plans of the house itself - that would be neigh on impossible I would assume. There was no legislative requirement to file those with the county or state, so only a previous owner MAY have them. Hello all, I came across your web site looking up information about Green County. My family has a summer home in New Baltimore for the last 45 or so years. I was interested in finding information about the people we bought the house from. I also wanted to locate the original floor plans of the house (I know the house had a fire at one time) and anything I could find out about the town and how it was in the past. I was hoping you could direct me on how to start and where to look. Thanks for any information you can give. _DPM33@aol.com_ (mailto:DPM33@aol.com)

NY. certainly were Methodist for many more generations. This guy would have been a contemporary of Dow, born 5 or so years earlier. He had a number of descendants that were also Methodist type, (without being ordained to my knowledge), circuit riding preachers. And I also had never heard of "Lorenzo" as well, but then that name never appeared to my knowledge in my line. Maybe I should be looking for it as a "possibility" to the one unknown brother of my gg grandfather and his known brother. (It was at that time, that the naming pattern seemed to change a bit, as well.) Clyde Rice, (Royce)

My name is Karl Eichhorn Hoff, Jr. and I am doing research on my families. My father was Karl Eichhorn Hoff, Sr. who was brought up in Athens, NY. His father was Benjamin Hoff, Jr. and Laura Alice Eichhorn who lived on 115 Franklin Street. During my childhood we would vacation for a week or two there. Benjamin's father and mother were Benjamin Hoff, Sr. and Anna Elizabeth Shays. Laura's mother and father were Charles H Eichhorn and Leonora Dernehl (Their other children were Wilhelmina L [who married Harold Every] and Fred). Both Benjamin Sr. and Jr. were captains on the Hudson River Day Line.
Re; the name Lorenzo As with many, I am not only interested in genealogy, but related history, life, lifestyle and "sociology", if you will, that made people the way they were. Family gives a reason to look. Never having heard of the "itinerate" preacher, Lorenzo Dow, he has proven a very interesting example to search, and I am thankful for the information. It ties some things together for me. You always find more questions and few answers doing this. If I may: It proved relevant, as Dow was born in Connecticut and started preaching as a Methodist there. Our family originated in Connecticut in the 1700 & 1800s, they were Methodist Episcopalians, and the first Lorenzo I know of in our family was born in 1851. In the 1850 it was a common name, and naming children after him is one of the things for which he is most famous. Maybe this also shows me another side of the family that is not currently apparent. They may have been somewhat religious rebels. I had found before that Methodist-Episcopalians were Presbyterian breakaways of some kind; there was some divergence that may be reason for some moving from Stamford Connecticut, which our family did. The were recorded as founders of a number of the M-E churches. They later lived in Harmony Pa. [now Lanesboro], and it is the origin of Joseph Smith and the Mormon Church, which apparently some other members of the family followed. There were a few other "religious" connections, and now "Lorenzo" ? Not having been that religious, I may now be spending a lot of time in churches, as I don't know most of these people. A son of a Lorenzo, Roger A. Newman Ref: http://www.curbstone.org/index.cfm?webpage=56 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenzo_Dow

There was a big Root family that settled in the Marshall and Peoria counties in Illinois in the first half of the 1800's. I am not related to this family, but Alphonsene Sickles (Sickels) married an Amos Root in Illinois. She is the daughter of Christopher Sickles and Mary Wickham.
