Hi Janice - have you ever checked to see if your Brown has any connection to the Browns in the Beekman Patent across the river ? I have Browns in Greene County - Stace -for one buried in Coxsackie - He is the son of Josiah Brown - who is in the Beaches Corners Cemetery. My Browns were in that little corner of Dutchess County that once was a part of Putnam and perhaps Westchester before Greene County and before that in No. Salem - Westchester. As for years - my GGG Grandfather Melvin Brown - son of Josiah was born in 1772 (baptised Christ Church, No Salem) I found some very interesting notes in the information on the settlers of the Beekman Patent - saying that my Josiah - was the son of a Hackaliah - I know that my Josiah was from a large family and I don't have a lot - ok - almost none - information on his family - You might look at those books and see what you can find - good luck, Mark Brown JANB111@aol.com wrote: > also in Coxsackie > John David BROWN who m. Jim, I can attest to the 'farming out' of children in the area. There were no local orphanages so adoption was the only available answer to parentless children. A case in point occurred in my family line in my paternal grandmother died in 1914 leaving my grandfather Herman with 6 young children. He found them all homes with other residents in the area, my father Raymond was raised by Arthur King and his wife on a farm in Coxsackie. This was a common practice that we researchers need to be aware of. In Athens, I have the following families although they also moved to/from other places. BROOKS Tons of Brooks in Athens. The connections are easy to see in some, tougher in others. Which ones? BROWN I see a few here. BRYANT I don't see any in my database. CHURCH Some of them. COON Them too. GREENE Ditto. HALENBECK Who doen't have Hallenbecks? KIPP I think they snuck in from the Albany area and added an extra p to the name. MERRITT REED I tend to think of the Reeds as a Coxsackkie family, no? SNYDER VAN VLECK VOSBURGH Lots of Vosburghs. They seem to have arrived early on from Columbia County. Jim and all: I am attempting to find the correct linage for three families lines all originating in Athens and ending up in the Stockbridge/Great Barrington, Berkshire County, MA, i.e., Van Hoesen, Van Loan, and Hollenbeck. I have provided detailed information below to shw how these families connect together in the Berkshire area: VAN HOESEN: I have a Polly Van Hoesen, born 1796, married to Henry E. Clow in 1815 (Jim you have previously provided Heny Clow's linage to me and I thank you for that information), however, I have still not been able to confirm Polly?s (Mary) lineage. I did find some research on http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ (by rosecrow_12871@yahoo.com) who apparently has some personal family documents that references Polly Van Hoesen's parents as: Jacob G. VAN HOESEN was born 28 Feb 1756 in NY, USA, and died 28 NOV 1809 in NY, USA. He married SARAH GARNER. She was born 1752? in NY, USA, and died 25 SEPT 1842 in NY, USA. . However, I have not been able to confirm this information anywhere. Does anyone have anything on Sara Garner or any other parentage information for Polly (Van Hoesen) Clow? VAN LOAN: I descend directly from Polly & Henry Clow?s daughter, Elizabeth Clough (born in Athens1823 & died in Stockbridge, MA1902) she married Jeremiah Van Loan (born in Athens.1829 & died in Great Barrington, MA in 1864 @ age 35). The death register for Jeremiah from the Boston Archives (also found on Newenglandancestors.org,) indicates his parents are Ethan & Mary. However, Sylvia has done some research for me and does not think "Ethan" is a correct reference. Jim you also have indicated that this doesn't not appear to be a correct name. I?m attempting to obtain a copy of the original register in Great Barrington to compare since the register at the Boston Archives is a hand written copy of the original. Jeremiah and Elizabeth had four children: Annette (married Abraham/Abram Hollenbeck), Jacob Henry, William Henry (married Rosa Decker) and Jeremiah aka Jerry/Jerre (married Buhla Wilson). The linage for Jeremiah's (senior) Van Loan has remained very elusive and if anyone! has anything on this guy I would appreciate it. HOLLENBECK: Elizabeth (Clough) & Jeremiah Van Loan's daughter, Annette, married Abraham Hollebeck in 1865 in Great Barrington. I believe his parents were George and Helena (Everts) but have not been able to find this family in any of the census for NY or MA. I have very little on Abraham Hollenbeck, does anyone have anything on him? If anyone has anything to contribute, informatin or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Hi Leslie, I was going to correct you prior e-mail when this one came in. Maggie Clough was the adopted daughter of Jeremiah E. Clough and is mentioned in his will as posted on Sylvia's website. I'm not sure who her parents were, but I think they were also Cloughs or Clows. Who was the Lizzie Plank that married Ross? I thought I saw her mother Martha T. with her in the 1905 Athens census. Hi Etta, Thanks for being more specific, now I know which couple you mean. Unfortunately, I've looked at that Clough couple and their children before and haven't been able to figure out how they fit into the Clow/Clough family, so I can't tell if there is a Hallenbeck connection with the wife. I haven't done much work in the Oak Hill area, but in looking through my database I can't find a Joseph Hallenbeck born before 1845. I also can't find a suitable Mary Hallenbeck even after adding a quick scan of the Oak Hill DRC records on Sylvia's website. I have noticed that some of the Hallenbecks who came to Oak Hill after the Rev War were from the Columbia County branch of the family. I'm not as familiar with them. You seem to have one of those genealogical clues that we all hate. One that leads nowhere when read literally. Some ideas you may have already thought of - Joseph wasn't the father's name - there were Jochims and such in the Hallenbeck lines, maybe it was anglicized? Maybe she wasn't born at Oak Hill, but moved there at an early age? I'm curious if anyone has any ideas about apparently unrelated children showing up with other families in the mid-1800 censuses. Sometimes it's clear that they are related, other times I have to wonder if the neighbors, being good neighbors, just took them in after their parents died. I've wondered if some of this may have been child-care arrangements when parents were away on travel. Without knowing that there was a family connection I don't see how an Oak Hill child would have wound up in Athens. Jim ---- Jim, Thanks so much for your prompt reply. Sorry I was so nebulous. Sometimes I talk in shorthand. The Coughs I referred to are John age 44, and Hannah aged 42. They are in the 1850 census of Athens, Greene County, NY on 13 Sep 1850. Sheet # 107. Trying to find out what the connection between the Hollenbecks and Cloughs was. Silly of me, I know, but I am assuming Mary Hollenbeck's mother died maybe in childbirth. It is the only explanation I have for her living with the Cloughs at the age of 4. We have never found the name of the mother. Joseph Hollenbeck seems to have dropped off the face of the earth. We have a copy of the marriage certificate of Mary E Hollenbeck and John Swetland. It lists her father as Joseph Hollenbeck. She was born in Oak Hill, NY. No mother was listed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is our biggest brick wall. Thanks, Etta
Have you seen the 1850 census? There was a Philo Snyder in Durham, age 14. He was the son of Philip (47) and Margaret (48 and deaf). No sign of triplets. But siblings were Betsy, 17, Nelson, 9, Demeris, 6, Enos E., 3, and Caroline, 1. There was also a John in the household, age 23.
James and all One vote for. As Oak Hill [a larger part of Durham] and Newman [and other unknown family names] should have long lists, but no one seems to be looking there. I'll be happy to wait my turn, so on with the show, I'll follow as we go. Thanks all. Roger A. I am looking for Snyders I am looking for a Philo Snyder born around 1836 was suppose to be one of triplets, the other 2 where named Philip and Philander. Philo fought in the Civil War and was born in Catskills. No one knows if it's the town or the mountains. I have the only Philo Snyder's Civil War records but it doesn't have any family info or place of birth. He married Catherine Mabie (not sure of the spelling) and had Ashley in Sep 1857 in Greene County. By 1860 census Catherine and Ashley where living in Demark, Lewis County. Catherine remarried by 1860 to a Johnson. The 1865 census list Ashley as born in Greene County, and Catherine born in Albany County. I have no idea if Philo died or what happened to him. I think he may be from Philip Snyder and Margaret Snyder's family, but that's just a guess -----Original Message----- From: Maresca [mailto:maresca@gru.net] Sent: Friday, January 06, 2006 12:42 AM To: NYGREENE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GREENE COUNTY] Re: Roll Call-Athens In Athens, I have the following families although they also moved to/from other places.
