Hi folks, just a quick update - am working on the next upload. Should hit next week. Sylvia
I have Rev. Samuel E. Sargeant as entering the ministry in 1915, serving 40 years and died Jan 30, 1985. His memoir was published in the 1985 Journal of the New York Annual Conference. I will be in the archive office in January and could photocopy and mail the memoir. Please reply off list and sent the usps address and a reminder of who I am to look up. Hear from you soon.. Sylvia, my list of "official" Reverends of Methodist Churches does not inclue Rev. Melvin H. Merchant. I've got Orville and Sheldon Merchant, but no Melvin. At least, today, he would not have to be ordained to bear the title "Rev." Not so sure about 1902. Sylvia, ?I may have found the missing Brandow, whose children George, John E, Keziah Ann, Lucinda, and Abigail are listed in the will of John Brandow b. 1790. I found George Brandow b.Sept 25, 1833 in Hunter, listed as a Private in the 120th NY Infantry. His parents were listed as Eli Brandow and Sarah Haines. Eli b. 1811 and died 1840 is buried in the Skiff Cemetery. Eli looks like the missing son to me. ~Ken~

Hi Audrey - need your expertise regarding the ME Church. A Melvin H. Merchant in Cornwallville, whom I am researching, was called a Rev. in the 1902 Catskill paper when he stepped in to preach for a Rev. who was on vacation. I see from the Cornwallville ME records that Merchant was actively involved in the church. Would he have to be ordained to preach or to bear the title Rev.? I have never seen him referred to as a Rev. other than in this one newspaper article. He actually was a farmer and then a merchant in his later years. Sylvia
John, can't find your email address anywhere, so hoping you are still a mailing list subscriber! Found this tidbit for you while undertaking a search for someone else: William F. McMenemy Catskill Recorder - May 18, 1900 We were shown this week a fine photo of Wm. D. McMenemy, a Catskill "boy" now located at Kansas City, MO, where he is connected with the Coe Sanitarium. "Will" as he is still called by his friends here, made his last trip to Catskill in 1888. Sylvia

>I found some info on Twilight Park, but was wondering just what and where it was. Twilight Park, Sunset Park and Santa Cruz Park are exclusive enclaves of summer cottages, private clubhouses and tennis courts situated in the vicinity of Haines Falls. Actually these "cottages" are fairly opulent homes built for wealthy city-dwellers, their guests and household staff. In the late 1800s and early 1900s that would have included butlers, maids, cooks, chauffeurs, nursemaids and gardeners. Judging from the description in the ad of "facing Twilight Park," your ancestor must have lived across the street (State Route 23A) from its entrance, where the Mountain Top Historical Society currently has its headquarters. At this point the narrow road heads down the steep mountain toward Palenville and Catskill in a series of hairpin turns, bordered by walls of rock and picturesque waterfalls on one side and a treacherous drop into the Kaaterskill Creek on the other. From the rear deck of the Twilight Park clubhouse one can see this road, across the clove, only when the leaves are off the trees.
