    1. [NYGREENE] Christmas Day
    2. Barbara de Mare
    3. Unfortunately, I did not save the recent thread on Haines Falls and a Park, the name of which I don't recall. While inextricably lost in Green County on Christmas Day, I ended up in Haines Falls and saw a sign to the Park--I recognized the name when I saw it. I don't think I missed any of the Catskill Park sections of Green County. It was so bad I just looked for the humor while eating my potato chips for Christmas dinner, being way to late to make dinner at Mom's after over three hours roaming the mountain roads of the county. The good part was seeing all the places I red about on this site. If anyone is interested in the whole story, read my blog. Barbara Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. 1. [NYGREENE] Scudder Photo
    2. Tim Mallery
    3. While going through a binder of Greene County ephemera I bought last year, I found a photo that had this written on the back: Here lies the body of Samuel Scudder Aged 17 years, 3 months and 2 day. Who was a son of Sam, who was a son of Paul, who was a son of John, who was a son of Peter God Bless Poor Sam Amen! The picture is of a man, four ladies and a young girl. They are sitting on some rocks in front of a stone wall, and are all well dressed. It may have been the funeral party. One of the ladies' faces has been scratched out.The photo appears to be from between 1880 and 1900, and has some doodling, probably from a child, on the back. There is no photographers mark on it. Do the names ring a bell with anyone?

    3. I guess folks may be a bit confused about the Greene County website and USGENWEB. I am not, actually, affiliated with the USGENWEB project, which is why my site is not linked through them. Richard Frisbee, from the Hope Farm Press, holds that site. I am toatally independent, which allows me alot of freedom to do what I think is right on the website. I guess I always assumed that folks found the mailing list through the the website. I'll try to remember adding the email address to some of the postings to assist folks in finding it. If you go to USGenweb.com, and work your way back through New York State and try to get to Greene County, you wind up at a site which is not the one that Sylvia administers. My backup route to Greene County is to take USGenweb to New York, then go to Delaware County Genweb, then go to the bottom of the research index page, and you will see a listing of web pages for counties abutting Delaware, and the Greene County site shown there is the one you want. 3. Sue, the key to finding what you want on the Greene County website is the Table of Contents page. I post What is new every time I upload something to the site and this stays for at least six months. 1. [NYGREENE] Happy Holidays to all
    2. Sylvia Hasenkopf
    3. That's what makes this list so great - all the hard work from so many dedicated folks. I'd like to take this moment to wish all on the Greene County List Mailing List a Happy and Safe Holidays and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Many wonderful new additions to the Greene County website are planned for the new year. I will be embarking on a new project and that is to transcribe and post the deed book indices for Greene County. An enormous job, as many may realize, however it is sorely needed. In addition, I will be heading to New Baltimore this year with the goal to complete at least three major cemeteries. Finishing up Thomson Street Cemetery in Catskill took way longer this year than I anticipated given the general poor condition of the stones. My husband volunteered to help me lift and read the fallen stones, so hopefully this is the most up to date transcription as we can make it. My thanks to Ron, my husband, for his help. The dedication of the Greene County transcribers is heartfully appreciated. Without your help, this website would not be what it is today. To Scott Wichmann and Mignon Matthews a HUGE thank you for your continual dedication to the many transciption projects you have undertaken this year. My thanks also go out to the many individuals who have opened up their personal archives to add tidbits of Greene County history to the website - it is your generous nature that has made the site so successful. My challenge to all - if you have old family photos, bibles, deeds, school ephemera etc, why not share it with other Greene County researchers. If you like to find out how, email me at [email protected] Happy Holidays! Sylvia Hasenkopf

    2. Sylvia, You transcribed the "Officers, Soldiers and Seamen..." list where I found Eli and wife Sarah Haines, and Pat Morrow tromped through the woods to transcribe Eli's grave, so who did all the hard work? All I did was put the pieces together that others found. I am also excited as I've been looking for Abi Brandow's father for years. She was married to Charles Ingalls, who's mother was Sally Benjamin. Charles was 5th cousins 2 times removed to Laura Ingalls from "Little House on the Prairie" fame. 1. Re: [NYGREENE] Where are these places?
    2. >Anyone ever here of Evesport or Prentiss? Where are they? Prentiss was probably near or in the vicinity of Athens. There was a post office in Prentiss from February 7, 1891, until October 31, 1903. C. K. Van Valkenburgh was the first postmaster. After the office closed mail was delivered out of the Athens post office. A map from that period of time may help to better pinpoint its exact location.
