    3. The only way you'd know if he received a land bounty grant is if his name appeared in the pension index, but even if his name did appear and his file mentioned the grant, you wouldn't know the specifics because New York either failed to record or failed to maintain those records. 2. Sylvia Hasenkopf
    3. Dave, I have found no evidence that any land in Greene County was part of the formal land bounty rights, where Militia soldiers received land instead of pay. What did happen, is that folks swapped land. If someone had land in Greene Co, but received land as part of the land bounty rights process in northwestern New York, they swapped parcels. The land in Greene County was pretty much carved up into patents by the time of the Rev War. Alot of squatting did go on as there were absentee landlords in some cases. The only land that could be given away by the government was land that was not already owned in some fashion. Orange, Rockland, Ulster, Greene, Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Westchester, Delaware, Schoharie and more I imagine, were already owned, largely by Patent holders. However, the land in northwestern New York was Indian land, and, I guess, available for white settlers. I have a map in my collection that clearly shows the extent of land owned by the whites around the Revolution, and it clearly shows western New York as Indian land. What may have happened is that your ancestor may have been entitled to land bounty rights up in the far northewest of the state, and didn't want to go up there, so swapped it out with someone who had land in Orange/Rockland counties, who wanted to go. I've seen that alot. Not really sure. in 1860 Charleston, was in Montgomery Co. Montgomery Co quite large in 1790 and was formed from Albany Co in 1772. In 1790 Montgomery Co included all or part of the following present day counties: starting at the north and west to each they are: -St Lawrence, Franklin; Jefferson, Lewis, Herkimer Hamilton, small bit of Essex; Oswego (by Lake Ontario), Oneida, Fulton; part of Wayne, Cayuga; Onondaga, Madison, Otsego, present day Montgomery; Seneca Tompkins, Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, part of Schoharie; Schuyler, Chemung, Tioga, Broome, and part of Delaware. Most soughter town in county - only one not along the Mohawk river. - on high plateau immediately west of Schoharie Creek. soils good for spring grains & dairying: Villages within Charleston are Burtonsville on Schoharie Creek; Charleston Four Corners in s.w. corner; vill of Charleston ne north border of town. Carytown and Oak Ridge are hamlets. A portion of this town included in atent of 24,500 acres granted to Wm Curry in 1637; and others were portions of the "Stone Heap Patent" granted to John Bowen and others in 1770 and Thomas Machins Patent of 1787. 3. Yes I too have noticed that void. I guess they traveled as circuit riders or the records were burnt or tossed. The Roberts later became Methodists and this might explain why I cant find any records. It doesn't help that they went back and forth between Athens and Hudson in 1820 to the Lutheran Church or Trinity Episcopal and TWO John Schermerhorns are in BOTH places ... Thanx for all your help. 3. In reply to where was Charleston, NY ? in 1700's? By  1860 counties take the present day boundaries.    CHARLESTON - (info from 1860 NY GAZETTEER) - formed from.   Mohawhk Mar 12, 1793.  Glen & pt of Root taken off in 1823. The first settlements were probably made previous to the Revolution.   footnote reads:  Robt Winchell, Nathan Tracy, Aden Brownley, and Joseph Burhap settled near Kimballs Corners, Abia Beaman near Charlestown P.O.  Thomas Machin, Capt. John Stanton, John Eddy, and Ezekiel Tracy were also early settlers.    Suggestion check Schenectady DRC records & Albany DRC;  also Montgomery Co Archives history center in Fonda, NY - many transcriptions of old records with focus on Montgomery.   Good hunting,    Barbara

    2. Here's an interesting item I found, a deed filed 154 years after it was written. Certainly makes you wonder where it had been kept all that time. The Windham Journal, weekly newspaper published at Windham, Greene County, New York, issue of Thursday, July 16, 1914. Real Estate Transfers Recorded in Greene County Clerk's office since our last report: Johannis Provost to Jacob Van Woert, 85 acres in Lonenburgh [Loonenburgh] patent, lot 17, 300 pounds (October 18, 1760)

    1. Re: [NYGREENE] Parents of Francis A. Brandow
    2. I would suggest getting copies of Francis (Brandow) Ostrander's death certificate, Justus Brandow's probate papers, and checking the 1875 NYS census (try looking in Jewett and Hunter first) to determine who her parents were. The 1870 Jewett, Greene County, NY census lists this family. While relationships were not stated, it seems likely that Frances was the daughter of Justus and Lanah (Conine) Brandow. Brandow, Justus - 31, male, white, butcher, born NY " Lanah - 32, female, white, keeping house, b. NY " Frances - 4, female, white, b. NY By 1880 Francis Brandow (14) was listed as a servant in the home of Jeremiah E. Haines. Her presumed father, Justice Brandow (42), was now married to Rachall (29), and they had two children, Edith L. (2) and Vernon H. (8 months), all of whom were living in Hunter, Greene County, NY. In 1900 Justice Brandow (61), wife Rachel (48), and their daughters, Edith (22), Virginia (12, b. in Virginia), and Velma (8) were living in Hunter. In 1910 Justus Brandow (71), his second wife Rachel (54), to whom he had been married for 33 years, and their daughter, Virginia (21, b. in Virginia), resided in Hunter. Rachel had given birth to five children, three of whom were still living. The 1900 and 1910 Hunter census indicates that Francis (Brandow) Ostrander, who had gotten married around 1884, had given birth to five children, all of whom were still living. Only four children, Ethel, Peter, Harvey and Lulu, were named on the 1900 census. >I am looking for information on Francis A. Brandow 1866-1940, married to Charles E. Ostrander 1864-1962 and living in Hunter. 4 children: Peter W Ostrander who married Eulalia Grace Benjamin, Ethel Ostrander who married Franklin Benjamin, Harvey Ostrander who married Flora Law and again to Nellie May Proctor, and Lulu Ostrander. Based on the time frame and location I think Francis's parents were Justus Brandow and his first wife Lannah Conine who are buried in the Hunter Village Cemetery. Anyone have any ideas?
