    3. Jim, You have a good memory. I couldn't help looking them up in Rootsweb. Edward C. Clark was Isaac Singer's financial partner. Edward was born 19 Dec 1811 in Athens. His father Nathan Clark was a potter in Athens. Edward married Caroline Jordan who was from Hudson. Edward Clark was one of the developers of the famous apartment building The Dakota in New York City. 3. There was a book written about the Singer who founded the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Isaac Singer was born in Pittstown, Rensselaer County. He was a colorful character. In my research I remember finding Singers in early 1700 records in the Hudson Valley. A patent infringement case concerning the sewing machine was settled in Albany. I don't remember a Greene County connection, but there might have been one. 3. Hi Sylvia, Isn't there a story in "History of Greene County" about the Singer Sewing Machine Company? If I remember correctly, the financial brain behind the firm was connected to Greene. If I was going to do the PBS thing I would use the hook of "Boom and Bust" for Greene County. Biggest tannery. gone. Ship building. gone. Bricks. gone. Ice Houses. gone. Mountain Houses. gone. And yet, Greene keeps re-inventing itself. Lots of patents along the way. 2. Betty Fink
    3. To all Hilltown and Helderberg area descendants As many of you know we have recently started a new web site, ALBANY HILLTOWNS, that allows family researchers who have ancestors in any of the Hilltowns of Albany County, (Rensselaerville, Berne, Knox and Westerlo), to add biographies, family stories, photos, and genealogies of their Hilltown ancestors and to share in the celebration of them. One of our goals is to produce and publish several books on the history and about the lives of the people who lived there. The first of our book series will be about the men from the Hilltowns who served in the Civil War. We are depending upon descendants of these soldiers to provide a biography on the web site for their Civil War ancestors and to participate in the writing of the story on their ancestors. We also would like to include available photos, copies of letters they wrote home, and other documentation appropriate for the web site and the book. The year 2011 is the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. To commemorate this anniversary we are planning an Albany Hilltowns Heritage Conference feature a Civil War encampment and possibly a re-enactment and at which we will distribute the books we have put together. We have tentatively chosen the Rensselaerville Institute for the conference. We anticipate that this event will be largely attended and that many people from across the nation will be there. We have the good fortune to have Michael Grant Hait Jr., as the editor for our Civil War book. He is currently in the process of writing his own book on Civil War soldiers so his experience as an author, his access to publishing and to the National Archives, as well as his enthusiasm in being a part of this endeavor is an invaluable asset. We sincerely thank all of you who have already signed up and are participating, and would like to encourage any of you who have not yet joined to visit our sites and do so. 3. I have an ancestor whose widow received 160 acres bounty land in Schoharie Co 1853, although the pensioner died in 1840. This was mentioned in his Rev War pension file, but there is no information as to the location of the land. Bounty Land Warrants Under the Acts of 1850, 1852, 1855 http://www.archives.gov/publications/general-info-leaflets/67.html#acts<http://www.archives.gov/publications/general-info-leaflets/67.html#acts> Under the acts of 1850, 1852, and 1855, Congress gradually extended the eligibility for bounty land warrants to retroactively compensate surviving veterans or the immediate heirs of all who had served since the Revolutionary War, as noted above. Those who obtained warrants under an earlier act usually were eligible under later acts as well, provided the total acreage they obtained did not exceed 160 acres. The card, microfilm, and published indexes cited above, while valuable, do not include references to each of the hundreds of thousands of veterans, widows, and survivors who obtained bounty land warrants under the acts of 1850B1855. The most comprehensive "index" to determine information about the filing of these warrants is the bounty land warrant application files among the military pension records held by NARA, most of which have not been microfilmed. Researchers who are unable to locate bounty land warrant filing information using the indexes noted above should use NATF Form 80. Has anyone tried NARA? 3. Barbara, I really don't think so. The only land that could be given away by the government was land that was not already owned in some fashion. Orange, Rockland, Ulster, Greene, Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Westchester, Delaware, Schoharie and more I imagine, were already owned, largely by Patent holders. However, the land in northwestern New York was Indian land, and, I guess, available for white settlers. I have a map in my collection that clearly shows the extent of land owned by the whites around the Revolution, and it clearly shows western New York as Indian land. What may have happened is that your ancestor may have been entitled to land bounty rights up in the far northewest of the state, and didn't want to go up there, so swapped it out with someone who had land in Orange/Rockland counties, who wanted to go. I've seen that alot. These rights pertained to Militia soldiers, which were under the jurisdiction of New York State and as such the State held all records pertaining to their service. Unfortunately, the Capitol fire of 1910 (I think that is the year) destroyed most of those documents. There are a few pieces left, that I have reviewed, but they are mostly receipts for pay. Nonetheless, Greene County was not a county where those "rights" applied. 3. There is actually a book, called the New York in the Revolution - Land Bounty Rights and lists the names of soldiers who were awarded land bounty rights.
