    1. Re: [NYGREENE] Greene County famous sons (and daughters)
    2. You've already mentioned some of the ones that first came to my mind: Congressman Zadock Pratt, potter Nathan Clark, Henry Meiggs, Thurlow Weed, Milton Hannibal Smith of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, and Maggie Newton Van Cott, the first woman licensed to preach in the Methodist Episcopal Church. New York State Governors Lucius Robinson and Washington Hunt were both natives of Windham. Francis Burns, the first African-American missionary bishop, was born in Albany County, NY but raised in Windham. He served in Liberia, Africa and died in Baltimore, MD. Rev. Levi L. Hill, who was born in Athens and preached in New Baltimore and Westkill, invented color photography. Levi and his brother, Robert, were also the publishers of "The Baptist Library," which I believe was the first magazine published in Greene County. They worked in Westkill, then moved to Prattsville after Col. Zadock Pratt provided them with a building, printing press, type foundry, and homes for their families. In 1859 brothers Alonzo and Boliver Newbury of Windham, and later of Coxsackie, invented a hand printing-press. In 1885 Jefferson Mead of Windham invented a carpet-stretcher. Author Clinton R. Seeley of Hensonville wrote the novel "Storm Fear". Actor Cornel Wilde starred in, produced and directed the movie based on this book. This was the first movie screenplay written by Horton Foote whose next movie project, "To Kill a Mockingbird," earned him an Oscar. Syndicated cartoonist Scott Adams, who created the comic strip Dilbert, hails from Windham. He was the first cartoonist to put his email address in a comic strip. Henry Fish of Windham started out as a photographer. After moving to Carpenteria, Santa Barbara County, CA, he began cultivating lima beans. In 1876 he founded the Fish Seed Company. Descendants of the Clarks, who were associated with Isaac Singer, donated property and continue to support the various foundations in Cooperstown, NY including the Farmers Museum, Fenimore Art Museum, the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, as well as the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA. During my senior year of college I did my museum internship at the Clark Art Institute. US Secretary of War and US Secretary of State, Henry Lewis Stimson (1867-1950), was a descendant of Windham's first settler, George Stimson. As for scoundrels, we can omit Prohibition-era gangster Jack "Legs" Diamond. He was born in Philadelphia, PA and died in Albany, NY. He was only a part-time resident whose hideout was located in Acra. One vile creature we can't disown was Isaac Haight of Windham. He became a Mormon and took a leading role in the September 11, 1857, Mountain Meadows Massacre in which a band of about 120 emigrants on their way to California were murdered. Haight and his coconspirators intended to blame the Indians for the attack. 3. Sylvia, Another prominent Greene County figure that has come to mind is William Plimley ( Old Route 23 named in his honor ) Plimley was a Catskill boy who for many years made his way by setting type in the office of the Catskill Recorder. Later, responding to his country's call, he enlisted in1862 in the town of Cairo as a private in Co.K, 120th NYS Regiment . In a few months he was promoted to sergeant. In 1863 he advanced to quartermaster sergeant and won his 2nd lieutenant bars in the spring of 1864. For meritorious service to his country he was promoted to1st lieutenant in the fall of 1864. On April 2,1865, as a first lieutenant, William Plimley was awared the Congressional Medal of Honor during the last battle on Hatcher's Run. His outstanding gallantry and extraordinary heroism in the face of a horrendous fire from the enemy in a last ditch stand to hold his crumbling line before Petersburg - rallied his men to make a last successful charge. This broke the back of the Confederate resistance and demoralized their great corp when A.P. Hill, their corps commander fell along with hundreds of his gallant men. After the war he became Department Chief of the Board of Elections for the City of New York. He was the originator and for two years the president of the Greene County Society. In 1913 he died while at his job. 3. Sylvia, One who stands out in my mind, most worthy of mention, was Thurlow Weed. Born in Acra in 1797, his family moved to Catskill when Thurlow was 2 years old. Ill- fortune befell his father, and he spent much of his life one step ahead of debtors prison. At the age of 8, young Thurlow pumped a blacksmith's bellows "at 6 cents per day" to help avoid his fathers imprisonment. Through his own initiative, he worked hard. First in the blacksmiths shop, then as a tavern boy for Captain Baker in Jefferson, and eventually he secured a position as a journeyman printer. With a deep desire to succeed, Thurlow went on to start, and become editor of the Albany Evening Journal in 1830, and in this position, eventually became involved in state politics. Friend to great and the lowly as well - he quickly rose in political circles and was dubbed the "dictator" of NYS Whig and Republican politics. When the Civil War broke out in 1860, Thurlow Weed and the Honorable John Bigelow were instrumental in helping to secure and hold the neutrality of Great Britain. A strong supporter of Abraham Lincoln to the end, he ran adrift of the staunch Republicans when he called for a gradual implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1867 he moved to NYC, and although still staying in politics, he never again sought a political office and eventually went into semi retirement. Born in near poverty, Thurlow Weed went on to become one of the most noted men of his time and died a millionaire in 1882. 3. Sylvia, My ancestor, Dennis S.( Schuyler) Stow, who was born in 1800 in Catskill, Greene County, has at least two inventions, one patented by the United States Patent Office. He moved to Cohoes, Albany County about 1847. (1). US Patent #6767- Dennis S. Stow, Cohoes, Albany Co., miter box, 10/2/1849 and (2). An invention praised by the New-York State Agricultural Society for the Year 1851-- "A Shingle machine, which cuts two shingles at the same time. " In " The History of Cohoes, N.Y." under death listings for 1863 on page 276; " Nov 23, in Troy, Dennis S. Stow, for many years a prominent inventor and resident of Cohoes, aged 63." I also have copies of two deeds in which Dennis S. Stow and several other men including Col. Zaddock Pratt bought land together under the name of the Prattsville Manufacturing Company in 1846 in Prattsville. 3. Was his name John? The news reports I found all had "Frank." None gave his age. Can't find him (with either name) on the 1910 census. He should be an inmate, as he confessed at the start of 1910 and the execution was in 1911. 3. Zadock Pratt is in one of my lines. Someone told me you can find 3000 sites on him; also Judge Malbone Watson. I don't know if you would want to included my grandmother, Sylvia, since she was there in the summers, but she was quite famous. I havn't found the info yet, but her father, being the Mayor of Tannersville, in at least 1911 ( records burned) may have helped with the sewage system because of his connections in NYC. Sue Maxwell BTW- if you send me your address, I will send you an article of the article I wrote for the UGA genealogy magazine Crossroads.

Within three years, he had advanced to general freight agent, eventually becoming vice president and traffic manager, and finally president in the 1880s. 3. Folks, thanks so much for your insights! Nathan and Edward Clark were two I had thought of too, but I hadn't known about Edward's association with the Dakota - so cool! Perhpas you folks didn't know that Sterling Clark was a grandson, or possibly a great-grandson of Nathan Clark and he and his wife francine were great collectors of Art. The created the Clark Institute of Art in Mass. to house their collection. It's famous all over the world! http://www.clarkart.edu/ Sylvia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debra Winchell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 23, 2009 12:26 AM Subject: Re: [NYGREENE] Greene County famous sons (and daughters) > > Jim, > > You have a good memory.
