Yes, Frank D. Layman, the son of Charles and Philena (Roe) Layman, was born in 1872. Charles, Philena and Frank are buried in South Jewett's Maplewood Cemetery. Either the transcriber made a mistake or the misspelled surname, Laymon, appears on their gravestone. Jim Planck, the writer of that recent Daily Mail article, gave Frank's age as 25 because that was how it was reported in newspapers at the time of his death. > I have Frank D. Layman born Dec 1872 in both the 1880 and 1900 census, in > Hunter, son of Charles b.1846 and Philena b.1845, also from Hunter. Is he the > one mentioned in the story? I have Frank D. Layman born Dec 1872 in both the 1880 and 1900 census, in Hunter, son of Charles b.1846 and Philena b.1845, also from Hunter. Is he the one mentioned in the story? Annatje Knott or Nancy Knott are the same person. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Coxsackie, "Nancy Bronk d. 19 Mar 1843 age 87y" as per Sylvia's transcript om her website. Perhaps, more interestingly, is where did she come from? This Coxsackie Reformed baptism shows two probable relatives, pg. 39, #819, 1784, 7.4. Jenie, of Ephraim Bronk and Annatje Bronk. Sponsors John Knots, Palli Knots. Were the sponsors her parents? She did name a daughter Maria, but not a son John. So, maybe, but not definitively. And were they new to the area, or are they from the Knoet (confusingly called Cloet in many records) family in the Albany/Schenectady area? According to the History of Green County by J. B. Beers, Mathys Houghtaling received a Patent in or near the village of Coxsackie in about 1697. From other information I have found that Mathys Houghtaling lived in Beverwyk or (sp. Beaverwyk) before coming to Coxsackie. He was supposedly living on or near his father-in-law, Hendrick Marsellis. Mathys was brought to New Amsterdam in 1655 as an orphan to work for the DWI Co. I am guessing he first worked as a servant as he was a teenager when he arrived. My question is two fold; Where is Beverwyk? and How long would Mathys of had to work for the DWI Co. before he would be free from bondage? If anyone can help me on either of these, it will help me build a plausible history for my ancestor, "Mathys Houghtaling" Thank you in advance for your assistance. I appreciate it very much. Is there any chance that any of these men/brothers could have been the father of Cornelius E. Schermerhorn? Cornelius E. Schermerhorn b. March 27, 1785 d. June 23, 1852 (source: Gravestone, Parker Cemetery, Westkill, Greene Co., NY) m.February 24, 1811 to Caitlyn ("Tiney") Hoes/Goes (source: Muitzeskill DRC) b.December 26, 1786 (source: Albany DRC) d. December 9, 1842 (source: Gravestone, Parker Cemetery, Westkill, Greene Co., NY). Cornelius presumably had four children (according to the 1930 Census) - the oldest of whom was Uriah Schermerhorn: b. September 14, 1820 in Lexington, Greene Co., NY (Gilboa DRC) d. October 28, 1866 in West Kill,Greene Co., NY (Gravestone) bur. in West Kill United Methodist Churchyard, West Kill, NY m.
