    3. A John Cornelius Schermerhorn married Annatje Osterhoudt about the same time Cornelius married Annatje Planck - the Osterhoudts mother was one of the infamous Dekkers so prevalent on this website. Thanx for the transcription. My father used to tease me as a boy and call me Ludwig ( I had long wild hair). Love that name. 1. Re: [NYGREENE] Greene County famous sons (and daughters)
    2. Sylvia, you asked about a biography of Maggie Newton Van Cott. The Vedder probably has this eleven page pamphlet: "Maggie Newton Van Cott First Woman Licensed to Preach in the Methodist Episcopal Church," by William R. Phinney, published by the Commission on Archives and History, New York Annual Conference, United Methodist Church, 1969. I had forgotten that she also invented some patent medicines. Bishop Daniel Sylvester Tuttle (1837-1923) - born in Windham, Episcopal Missionary Bishop of Montana with jurisdiction in Idaho and Utah, later Bishop of Missouri Rev. Daniel Steele (1824-1914) - born in Windham, first President of Syracuse University Blossom Dearie (1926-2009) - jazz singer, born in East Durham, died last weekend http://www.legacy.com/TimesUnion-Albany/Obituaries.asp?Page=Lifestory& PersonID=123975648 Thomas Cole (1801-1848) - artist, founder of the Hudson River School of landscape painting. Although he was born in England, he has certainly brought fame and tourism to this county. Candace (Thurber) Wheeler (1827-1923), who was born in Delaware County, NY, was associated with Louis Comfort Tiffany. She had a home in Onteora Park. In fact, she and her brother were responsible for creating this colony for artists and writers. Her daughter, Dora (Wheeler) Keith (1856-1940), was an artist and illustrator. Another daughter, Candace T. Wheeler (1845-1876), married Dr. Lewis Atterbury Stimson (1844-1918). They were the parents of Henry Lewis Stimson (1867-1950) who was US Secretary of War 1911-1913 during Taft's presidency, and from 1940-1945 under FDR. He also served as US Secretary of State 1929-1933 during the Hoover administration. Googling any of these women will produce thousands of hits. Author Mary Mapes Dodge (1831-1905) also owned a home in Onteora Park. Her best known work was "Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates." She was also the editor of St. Nicholas Magazine for children. Stage actress Maude Adams (1872-1953), another resident of Onteora Park, died in Tannersville. She was famous for performing in plays of James M. Barrie such as the Little Minister and Peter Pan. The Mountain Top Historical Society in Haines Falls probably has more information on these women.

    1. Re: [NYGREENE] Annatje Planck - @ Athens.
    2. I am descended from Anna ver Planck, b. 1764 in Oak Hill, near Durham. She was the daughter of Johannes and Catharina Schuh ver Planck. I have that family back for a few more generations if anyone is interested. I agree that there are most likely two different ver Planck or Plan(c)k famililies. One is probably Dutch and the other former Palatine residents. I have found the Germans in one of Henry Jones' books. In fact, I had a discussion with Henry at one of the genealogical gatherings we both attended, and from that moment forward, whenever he has spotted me, he callls out, "Plink, plank, plunk." He's a funny guy. Kathy Gire **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! I believe Johan Wilhelm Brandow's wife's last name of Reuter is based on the baptismal record of their grand-daughter, Elisabeth, d/o of Nicholas. She was born in 1727 and the sponsors were Hannes Brandau and Liesabeth Reuter. (West Camp Lutheran). Perhaps there is more basis for the name. This is a very much guessing, but I wonder if Anna Brandow, who married Laurens Van Buskirk could have been the Anna Brandow born in 1717. Are there any records for children born to her and Johannes Schermerhorn? None are listed in Henry Jones' work. Johan Wilhelm and Elisabetha had grand-daughters named Anna, but none are of the right age. John Brandow and Laurens Van Buskirk were named executors in the will of Michael Van Schaick (written 1758). I imagine John was Johan Wilhelm's son (b. 1712, md. a Van Schaick) and Anna's brother. 1. [NYGREENE] Schermerhorns at Lunenburg, NY
    2. Scott, John (IT)
    3. There are two marriages unaccounted for in the R Schermerhorn Genealogy. Perhaps R S had as much problem assigning them to a family as I have. The two marriages are: Henry Schermerhorn to Polly (Mary/Maria) Van Valkenburg 1796 at the Zion Lutheran Church at Athens and John Schermerhorn who married Hendrickse/Hannah Van Hoesen ca. 1797 probably at Athens. John resided at Athens 1800 thru 1820. Had children Hannah,Jane, John and Magdalene and a few others. Henry had son John b. 1805 - all born at Athens. Hannah eldest daughter of John married Peter Egbertse 1818. This ties the family of the Schermerhorns to line of Johann Schermerhorn and Elizabeth Dederick. The marriages of two of their sons to Egbertse and a daughter and two of the boys marrying Van Hosens ties it even closer - as opposed to the other Schermerhorn still somewhat residing in Athens as late as 1790 which is Johann Schermerhorn and Jannetje Van Hoesen ( by the way they had no son John and I find that interesting). This Johann H. Scherermhorn was still resident in Coxsackie as late as 1790 - with children young enough not to be matched in the genealogy. In the R Schermerhorn genealogy the two sons Henry and John of John S and Eliz dederick - could both be EASILY the boys mentioned above and not the two mentioned in the genealogy. In fact those two children were at Claverack principally. In 1799 Natie Groom of Athens witnessed the baptism of Johns oldest daughter Hannah. This Natie Groom was wife to Joseph Groom of Athens after his first wife a Maria van Loon died. they were married in 1796 - she was married as Hannah Schermerhorn. cant tell if she was a widow or not. whoever this Hannah/Natie is - I bet she is a sister to John and or Henry or mother. Joseph groom was b. in 1748. The Egbertse family ties into the Van Buskirks - and I believe that Hendrickse Van Hosen her parents could be Jannetje Van Buskirk and Jan Van Hoesen they witnessed John S and Hendrickse VH dau Jannetje. it is easy finding marriages to these families over and over. that's the hard part. I would love to know the age of Hannah/Natie wife of Joseph Groom. I think she died in 1818 at Athens. her husband owned a large tract of land , a nice house still standing called "Howard Hall". she is mentioned in a codicil of Joseph Groom but I don't have access to it. perhaps she mentioned family. There are Hannah/Annatje's in the line of Johann Schermerhorn and Eliz Dederick thru his sons Henry and Cornelius who had daughters(who might be the ones married to Jos Groom) and no sons and RS makes mention of that. it could be that Henry and John at Athens are unnamed sons of these two boys. the Egbertse connection revisited in 1818 might be a tie. I can make great theories and innuendo but with no baptisms I can only rely on collateral data. in the end I will never be sure. jack

    3. Sylvia: There was a query exactly like this on Dec. 22, 2002. There does not appear to be a reply at that time. Does the Spruceton Cemetery Association have an idea? The address for them is: 1911 Spruceton Rd., West Kill, NY 12492-5729. Beverly Thayer is listed as a contact. This info might have been listed in 2002. Dear Old Greene County can be downloaded at the following website: http://www.archive.org/details/dearoldgreenecou00gall It appears that there are various ways to dowload it. 3. I believe there were several children baptized at the Gilboa DRC for Cornelius D. and Katy Brandow. I am unable to provide more details right now - I just remember seeing several names there ... -- in my research I found that the one of the transcribers assumed that my Cornelius (E.) and Catalina were the same couple but another transcriber (copy in NYS library) listed my couple with his correct middle initial "E" and her name "Catiline" instead of "Katy". The two couples MUST have known each other but I don't know the familial connection - they had essentially the same names and lived in Lexington at the same time. My Tiney/Catilina Goes (along with Cornelius E.) were married in 1811 and were buried in the Parker Cemetery where Peter Goes was buried - by the way Cornelius and Peter both had their 2 yr old children (Uriah Schermerhorn and Elizabeth Goes - born less than 1 month apart in 1820) baptized at the same time (8/15/1822) - guess where? Gilboa DRC!! This was also after Cornelius D. and Katy (with children) moved north to Canada. I still can't figure out how MY Cornelius fits into the bigger Schermerhorn picture... In a message dated 02/03/09 10:01:25 Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I have in my file Cornelius Schermerhorn b. 27 Jan 1776 in Kinderhook. He died 7 Dec 1864 in Cairo, NY. I only have 2 children for him and Catherine Brandow, namely John William b. 26 Jan 1812 and Henry Ostrander b. 10 Jul 1815. I have no dates for Catherine so if anyone has found a stone reading for her, much appreciated.
