There is a reason lists are managed....that is so that posts to the list don't get "out of Hand". I am that manager. I don't judge anyone on who they are or what kind of relationship they have with their computer or the internet....only that they follow the simple guidelines spelled out in the welcome letter that everyone receives when they sub to any rootsweb list. One of those guidelines is that you should NOT post any virus alerts/ warnings. When someone does not follow those list guidelines, I contact them personally, to let them know their post was not appropriate. There is no need for anyone to comment publicly on the faux pas' of others. When you have anything to say on ANY off topic subject, you need to contact ME personally.....NOT the list. For those who have "lost" their welcome letter [you should always save them...they contain useful info!] , I 'm sending it today[see below]. If you have never read it, please do so. The same welcome letter is sent if you join the digest list, the only difference is anywhere you see NYGENESE-L , substitute NYGENESE-D, EXCEPT for the posting directions...all posts go to the NYGENESE-L address. These letters would also contain a copy of your original "sub" email [not included here]. That email would include your email address at the time you originally subbed. When changing your email address, please UNsub your old address BEFORE it expires, then sub your new address when you have reset your mail program to the new address. If you ever get in a bind where your ISP changed your address[it happens], or you forget to UNsub before the old address expires, then contact me and I'll unsub your old address and you can go ahead and sub the new address. Remember, once you change your address the rootsweb servers no longer know you!! Now lets get back to the hobby we all love! Betty listowner Welcome to the NYGENESE mailing list! **************IMPORTANT*************** ******PRINT AND SAVE THIS EMAIL******* it contains info on how to post messages, unsubscribe, resubscribe, and the email address you have used to subscribe. You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to NYGENESE as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to NYGENESE-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to NYGENESE-L-request@rootsweb.com. 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to NYGENESE-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to NYGENESE-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to NYGENESE-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. IMPORTANT GUIDELINES FOR POSTING TO Genesee Email List are as follows: 1. Purpose. The Genesee Email List is for discussion of the history of Genesee County NY, and the genealogy of Genesee County families. Discussion of history of Genesee County is also welcome. 2. The custodian of the Genesee Email List is Betty Thomas - bettyt@lycos.com If you have problems getting unsubscribed from the list or have any other difficulties with the list, write to me (not to the list) and I'll try to resolve the problem. 3. Message format and attachments. Please submit messages only in plain text, and don't submit attachments. Many of our subscribers are using software that cannot read attachments. Please, always use a helpful, informative subject line with SURNAMES in caps. 4. Replying to a Post: The general rule is: if the information is very specific to you, then reply to the person only. If your reply also contains information of a more general nature which may be of help or interest to others, then reply to the list. 5.Advertising. Technically, RootsWeb has a "no commercial use" policy. Like all RootsWeb policies, though, the last thing that we want is for policy to get in the way of our doing genealogy. Therefore, the Genesee Email List will accept brief announcements of books and other resource material for sale that is specifically related to this county. Don't include prices and ordering info; just include a pointer to a URL, a commercial mailing list, or an E-mail address where the complete ordering information can be found. In case of doubt, send the message to the list custodian, bettyt@lycos.com, and I'll review it before you post to the list. 6. No-nos. Please do not submit virus alerts, chain letters, or other off-topic material to the list. Don't send copies of copyrighted material. Vulgarity and personal attacks on other list members are also unwelcome. Don't send messages exceeding 8 kilobytes in length. If someone else violates these rules, please do not send their message back to this list! That just magnifies the problem, and defeats our anti-spam defenses at Rootsweb. A transcript of the original subscription request is included when you receive this letter. ------------------------------------------------------------
