    1. [NYGENESE] Dr. MOSES J HILL, DIED IN IL 1860.

    3. We are looking to connect our Dr. Moses J. HILL with his proper parents and ancestors as well as to connect his wife Betsey ? with her family. We know that Dr. Hill was born in NY 30 Jan 1783 and his wife Betsey was born in the same year in CT. Their first children were born in 1813 so their marriage was probably around that time in CT. Dr. HILL and his family moved to Lagrange IN about 1830 and in 1832 his daughter Laura HILL married Washington ADAMS in Lagrange. Dr. HILL's son Moses N. Hill married that same year (1832) to Nancy Martin. Washington ADAMS and his wife Laura HILL moved to Mt. Carrol, IL about 1853. They had three children: Mary J ADAMS, Moses ADAMS and Martha ADAMS. Mary J. ADAMS married Andrew J. CHRISTIAN in 1861 in Mt. Carrol, IL. Although we do not know where Dr. Moses HILL is buried other than in Illinois, we thought it possible that he lived in Mt. Carrol IL since his daughter and son-in-law lived there. Dr. Hill died 29 Jun 1860 and his wife Betsey in 1855. Does anyone have information on these families so that we can trace their ancestors? Thank you for your help. Perry Adams San Carlos, California

    3. Perry I would start by looking for Dr Hill in the 1830 census. Then the 1840 and 1850 census and even the 1860 census as they are usually done just before the time period that he died. And usually there is a listing of people who have died in the previous few months.. The earlier censuses only list the head of household but starting in 1850 they list the entire household. I would also look in Lagrange for a death and burial. Do you know where the children of Moses and Betsey were born? If Ct, it might be a clue to where in Ct they were married) From there I would branch out to towns surrounding Lagrange until I found him. I would look at what large hospitals were in existance at the times of death-- is it possible that he died in a hospital ? I would also contact all decendants of Moses and Betsey that I could locate and pick their brains to see if perhaps they have more information than you do. Was Moses a prominent man in his county where Lagrange is located? I would check the county records and the historical and genealogical societies in that area. I also notice that for some reason you have posted this listing on a Ny Genese County e-mail list. Did they at one time live in NY? If so I would check newspapers for articles and/or obituaries in that county. Some of my ancestors lived in Genese county and when searching I have seen obits for folks who died elsewhere but were well enough known in NY that the obit was sent back there. If he was a medical Dr that might very well be the case in this instance. One other idea although he would have been 77 in 1860. Is it possible that he served as a Dr in the Civil War? I hope this gives you some ideas and please feel free to contact me if you need furthur help. Judie PS do you belong to an e-mail lis for Illinois?
