    3. Looking for any information at all on BERNHARD MOSS (1839-1916) and wife RACHEL GENAJOHN,(1842-1914), both immigrated from Germany in 1971, lived in IL, then moved to Byron Center. Mostly interested in 3 sons, FRED MOSS of Byron who married EMMA EPKE, WILLIAM MOSS of Byron, and JOHN MOSS of Elba who married a Minnie KNELK. Any information about any of these individuals would be wonderful. Thank you. I have been unable to locate BERNHARD on any census, even though I know he lived in Byron from 1883ish until his death. Thank you, Tina Moss Duver

    3. -----Original Message----- From: Sent: Friday, January 24, 2003 10:25 AM To: QC-ETANGLO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [QC-ETANGLO] Post 1901 Census -- 1906 Census records released today Greetings All. "Genealogists, historians, and researchers across the country won a major victory today as Industry Minister Allan Rock announced the immediate release of the nominal records from the 1906 census. Ontario Senator Lorna Milne (Liberal -- Peel Region) welcomed the news." So reads the opening paragraph of a News Release issued today, 24 January 2003, by Senator Lorna Milne. The full text of Senator Milne's News Release, and other pertinent News Releases, can be found on the Post 1901 Census Project website at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census The announced release of the 1906 Special Census of the Western Provinces is indeed a major victory for genealogists and historians who have been actively campaigning for this for the past five years. It is felt that release of the 1906 Census will lead the way for the eventual release of the 1911 and subsequent Censuses of Canada. We are grateful to Industry Minister Allan Rock for recognizing what is right and proper, and doing what legally should have been done in 1998. We are pleased that the Minister has released the 1906 records in full, and without restrictions, on the same basis as 1901 and earlier records have been available. We are grateful also to MP Murray Calder, and especially to Senator Lorna Milne for the effort they have put in for us to reach this point in our campaign. We have won a major battle, but the war is not yet over. We have yet to deal with expected legislation that must ensure the orderly and continued release of Historic Census records, after the legislated period of closure. We expect that legislation to be brought down shortly after Parliament resumes sitting at the end of January. We trust Minister Rock, in drafting the legislation, to remember that what we seek is the same unrestricted access to records after, now 1906, that is currently available for records up to then. 3. Progressive Batavian Batavia, Genesee County, New York State April 30-1875 # 2 Alexander.-The Alexander Cheese Factory commenced operations yesterday, 27th inst. Quiet a good number patronized it the first day. It is thought that they will have at least 300 cows. That will make quite a respectable dairy. Mr. GARTLAND, (formerly of the Attica factory), is to run the factory. The Literary Society met last Tuesday evening at the house of Mrs. MURRAY, and had a very pleasant time. A portion of the time next meeting is to be devoted to spelling--have to do it to keep up with the times. The next meeting will be held at the house of Walter GUILE, Tuesday evening, May 4th. A good time is anticipated. L.B.S. * North Alexander.-The Cheese Factory here opened for the season on Monday last, 27th inst. Mr. N. HAWLEY, the proprietor, has expended considerable money upon this factory, in building and furnishing, and, he comes well recommended as a first-class man in the business, we hope he will be well patronized. E.M. CROSSMAN has a hen which he regards as a smart fowl. She hatched a brood of chickens on the 27th day of March last, and, though still caring for her chicks, she commenced to lay again on the 26th of Apr. and has followed up each day since. E.M. CROSSMAN has a hen which he regards as a smart fowl. She hatched a brood of chickens on the 27th day of March last, and, though still caring for her chicks, she commenced to lay again on the 26th of Apr. and has followed it up each day since. CROSSMAN regards this as remarkable, but being grossly ignorant in henology, I don't know whether it is or not. However, as CROSSMAN sells the eggs at $1 per long dozen, the animile must be profitable, whether remarkable to not; and profit is the winning card now-a-days. J. * Corfu.-An itinerant musician visited town last week, and "every gale breathed melody." And now ministers caution their congregations, in changing their wardrobe, not to forget their "weasel skins." A word to the wise, &c. Corfu now boasts a meat market, presided over by Henry HALL. If his pecuniary success shall equal his hardihood, we shall be willing to acknowledge our unreliability as a prophet. Our recent "etherial mildness" took a violent cold one day last week, and the chills were unabating, until to-day the symptoms are more favorable. We are told that "there shall be seed time and harvest," but unless "seed time" soon arrives, the "harvest" will be tardy and uncertain. A disgraceful rencounter, of which the neighbors are heartily ashamed, and of which the parties ought to be ashamed, occurred between two neighbors residing two miles east, on Saturday last. 'Twas the outgrowth of an old feud. Corfu is supposed to be the pivotal particle upon which the balance of the world revolves in safety and security; and shall history tell to future generations that we never had a spelling school! While sister cities and towns are having old-fashioned spelling schools, new-fashioned spelling schools, and spelling schools a la mode, our orthographists sit supinely down and allow the King's English to be ruthlessly slain, innumerable Webster's Unabridged to be lost and won without even signifying an ability to go and do likewise. Journalists and typos delight in it; it is the joy of gray haired men and fair-haired youths; clergyman and gamin go into raptures over it. Corfu, we are ashamed of you! Awake from your lethargy... submitted by Linda Schmidt *********************************************

    3. Progressive Batavian Batavia, Genesee County, New York State April 30-1875 Local Record Gen. Rock THOMPSON, with his street brigade, has been making successful war upon the mud and dirt accumulations of our principal streets, during the past few days. Three new houses on Bank street soon--one for L. TIMMONS, one for Geo. HUMPHREY, and one for Charles REED. Morgan has the Timmons job and is pushing it with vigor. George LAMPMAN, of this village, died at Livingston Co., on Saturday last of quick consumption, and was brought home for burial on Tuesday last. He was 22 years of age. William WOOD, of this village, did a very neat job of painting and lettering on Luke TAYLOR's Albion 'Bus recently, thus demonstrating him to be well qualified for his biz. Rev. Thos. McLEOD has received and accepted a call to the Presbyterian church of this village. We hear him highly commended as a preacher and an earnest christian worker. Mr. Arthur BARKER of North Bergen has just got up from a severe turn of diptheria, and his child is also just recovered from scarlet fever. So reports the Holley 'Standard.' Stone & Thomas are not behind their competitors in the Dry Goods trade, either in quality of stock or scale of prices. They will sell as good as the best and as cheap as the cheapest. The HEWITT Brothers are in market early, as usual, with an excellent stock of new spring goods. They are live merchants and pleasant dealers, and do the fair thing by all their customers. Miss Julia A. YOUNG of this village has been re-engaged as teacher of reading and elocution at the Starkey, Yates county, Seminary. Miss YOUNG is a competent teacher of those branches. Le Roy used to be called Bellona, for dietetic reasons we presume, but in 1813 the name was changed to Le Roy, in honor of Hermon Le Roy, one of the proprietors of the Triangle tract, upon which a portion of the town lay. Hon. E. TOWNSEND, of Pavilion, and ex-sheriff LUSK of Batavia, were in town on Thursday last. Mr. TOWNSEND was in quest of rams to fill a large order from Colorado. He is a large dealer in sheep and has this spring sold some high priced rams to go west. Within the last two weeks he has purchased in Vermont some of the famous Hammond stock. He will show some of his best at the sheep-shearing in Rochester on the 5th and 6th of May. Batavia Library-From the annual report of the President of the Batavia Library Association, we learn that during the past year there have been added to the library 338 volumes, and that the whole number of volumes now contained in the library is 2108. Number of members of the Association 150--average daily attendance 40--number of volumes drawn during the year 9400--total receipts from membership and sale of papers $417--total expenditures during year $1,199.32--net receipts from the lecture course $344.55--total balance in the treasury, April 7th, $$4,271.41. A very gratifying exhibit. * submitted by Linda Schmidt

A few people have done so without my permission. I've had to write and ask them to remove the info. I highly recommend that you all remove any information on your genealogy websites about living people. Use names only (no other data) for those who are still alive. I think it's a good precaution. 3. Researcher, I'm dealing with the mountainous headache of reclaiming my life. Proving who I am is harder than one can imagine. A year later and I am no closer straightening out this mess. Lawyers fees have pushed me into bankruptcy. As this article mentions. This person lost their identity through a genealogy web site. The same with me. Please be careful! WW This is just one example of many i have found. http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/george/5828.asp http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/03/12/eveningnews/main503584.shtml Identity Thieves Get Online SALEM, Ore., March 12, 2002 (AP) "It's something you don't have to be a rocket scientist to do." Stephen Massey, convicted identity thief ID THEFT ON THE RISE (CBS) Identity theft has become an epidemic, with thieves surfing the Internet for public records and rifling through the garbage for names, records and receipts. CBS News Correspondent Jerry Bowen reports an estimated 750,000 victims a year are affected by the crime. The practice is as common in the newspaper police blotter now as old fashioned burglary, and no one is immune. Ben and Tracy Bales' 16-month-old son Tyler's identity was stolen after the boy died. Ben explains someone claimed Tyler as a dependent to get a $1,500 tax credit. The Baleses learned of the fraud only when the Internal Revenue Service rejected their tax return. It angers Ben that the Salem, Ore. couple had to bring a death certificate and other documents to the IRS as proof when, "The person that stole his identity didn't have to prove anything. But we had to prove that he was our child." The Baleses believe the thief got Tyler's information from a genealogy Web site, where he is still listed. Ironically, they still don't know who the person is, because the IRS protects the thief's identity. And then there's the story of Seattle resident Dawn Whitaker. Identity theft made her life a living hell. "I lost my life," she says. "I lost who I am because somebody else became me." As she has worked through piles of paperwork trying to clear her credit record, so far the thief has rung up about $5,000 in fraudulent checks and credit card charges. Along the way Whitaker made an amazing find: there was video from a record store of the person using her stolen credit card, twice in 20 minutes. But without a name for the face caught on tape, she says the police won't even look at it. "If I knew a name, we wouldn't be going through all this," she explains. Identity theft is a low priority for many police departments, and that's a big advantage for identity thief Stephen Massey. Though he is now in federal prison, he maintains, "it's something you don't have to be a rocket scientist to do." Massey ran up $400,000 in fraudulent credit card charges on the stolen identities of 800 victims. He says he got help from the credit card companies. He sees Web sites that allow you to apply for and receive credit card accounts online as "free money." "It's better than robbing a bank," he says. "But you're robbing a bank." © MMII, CBS Worldwide Inc. All Rights Reserved.

    3. Progressive Batavian Batavia, Genesee County, New York State March 26-1875 # 3 Local Record. Monday morning, 22d inst., the thermometer marked 4 degrees below zero, at Batavia, 8 degrees below zero at Le Roy, and 10 degrees below zero at Attica. How's that for a slosh of the polar wave? Not Extravagant.--The item of $6,000 is set down in the "Supply Bill" as the State appropriation for repairs, &c., for the Institution for the Blind at Batavia. No extravagance in that item--unless it be extravagant economy. Mrs. Emily TOMPKINS, aunt of Mrs. F. G. SHELDON, of this town, and residing with her, died on Thursday of last week, aged 72 years, of dropsy of the chest. She formerly resided in Bergen, and was taken there for burial on Monday of this week. Rochester papers please notice. Remarkable.--A gentleman who ought to know whereof he speaks, told us a day or two since, that Dr. HUTCHINS of this village had, since his sickness about a year ago, treated over two thousand cases of disease without losing a single patient who had been first entrusted to his care. Get around a little earlier boys with your "items" for our local columns. We appreciate and thank you for your favors but they often come too late in the week to be available. Several communications came last week after we had commenced to work off the paper. Wednesday is in time but Thursday is too late. Every Body is Invited!--By handsome bills printed by A.J. FOX, we learn that William CHARLES, gives an Auction party at his place in this town, one mile east of the Fair Ground, on Tuesday March 30th. Fun will begin at 12 o'clock sharp. C.F. STARKS has engaged to deliver the oration. Presents of stock, farm tools, grain &c., will be delivered to everybody--who will pay for them. "Coming Events cast their shadows before." Rumor says the Central Railroad company have purchased some twenty acres of land, in addition to the twelve they previously owned just east of the village corporation, and that the company design to establish cattle yards there. The rumor may not be correct, but we know that not long since an agent of the road visited Batavia for the purpose of prospecting its advantages for the establishment of cattle yards here, and that at that time the rumor was the Law Farm for the yards and the Law house for a "Drover's Home." If such a thing is to come here, we hope, for savory reasons, it may be established east instead of west of the village. * Darien.--Mr. Clark SHAW of this place has sold his farm to Mr. George PETTIBONE. Mr. SHAW talks of removing to Batavia. Captain Wm. GRANT has sold his place of four acres near Darien to Joseph CARTER for $850. The Captain has purchased the 40 acres known as the Geo. EBBS farm. Harvey DELANO has sold his Darien farm to two brothers named BECK from Bennington, Wyoming Co. Price not known. At and near the Center are several cases of scarlet fever and diphtheria, but none fatal, lately. At the southwest part of the town Mr. LORING has sold his farm to Mr. COCHRAN. * South Byron.--Rev. J.L. FORSTER's recent lecture here for the benefit of our "Bell Fund" was a success. Forty dollars were realized by admission fees, and after the lecture some $300 were subscribed by those present. A fine, 1,000 pound bell, has been ordered. * Corfu.--Old, hoary headed winter ought to be ashamed to linger so long in the lap of gentle, blushing spring. The last meeting of the Ladies Literary Society was held at the house of Silas KINNE. The next meeting is appointed to be held at the house of D. McVEAN, in Darien, on Tuesday eve, March 29th. It flourisheth like a green bay tree. F.F. SMITH arrived home, on a visit to his parents and friends, on Wednesday last. He is looking well and hearty. Evidently "buckwheat cakes agree with him." Welcome home, Fred. Rev. DODD of the M.P. church, has been laboring zealously for the past two months to "send life through this cold clay." Some ten or fifteen have seen the error of their ways, and returning, sought admission to their Father's house. 'Tis well. G.A. SIMPSON of this place died, of consumption, on Friday. He was 47 years of age. He was a faithful and efficient officer, an upright man, and a good neighbor. His remains were taken to East Pembroke for interment on Sunday. His family have the sympathy of the community in this the hour of their afflictions. Our village school closed on Friday with appropriate ceremonies. Miss FINN, as teacher in the juvenile department, is evidently the right person in the right place. Mr. KINNE, of the academic department, is a host within himself. He has taught our school for three years in succession, and is greatly admired by its patrons, and beloved by the pupils. After the distribution of candy to "sweeten memory," and remarks, in a happy vein, by the Rev. Drs. DODD and PETERS, the school was dismissed. * Neighboring Counties Incendiaries are bothering Geneseo. Potatoes bring one dollar a bushel in the Nunda market. The Geneseo corporation tax is 14 cents on $100 assessment. Corning, Steuben Co., has fifty places licensed to sell liquor. Dunkirk is putting on airs--it claims to have had an earthquake recently. The Albion stone quarries will give employment to nearly 150 men this season. A mad dog was killed in Albion last week. Queer time of year for mad dogs. A duck was found sitting upright and frozen solid in the ice in the lake near Dunkirk recently. A Brockport baker is selling bread at six cents per loaf. No excuse now for not becoming a loafer. One thousand and two hundred dollars is what Rochester made off from its last winter's lecture course. A man named HENDERSON, who resides at Niagara, has shot no less than six eagles during the winter. Rev. D.H. MULLER left Buffalo for Covington, his new "Kaintucky home," on Wednesday of this week. * submitted by Linda Schmidt *********************************************

    3. Progressive Batavian Batavia, Genesee County, New York State March 26-1875 # 2 Bergen.-"Gentle Spring" is not as gentle as might be in this region, with its thermometrical wave sloshing around zero; but next August will bring its compensations. About the most common things in this section are auctions. We notice Aaron ARNOLD's name appended to nine different auction bills for this month, and to several, already, for next month. The names of Menzie and Wilcox also ornament many such bills. P.J. MATTHEWSON is to re-open the photograph gallery here April 1st. He's a good artist and we wish him the success he merits. Mr. James MILLER has sold the house recently occupied by Geo. WARREN to Samuel CARPENTER, who removes it to another lot in the village. Mr. MILLER designs to erect a much better house in its place. On Monday last, in moving the CARPENTER house, MR. SUTHERLAND, mover, got it under too much headway at Tully's corner, and it collided with the meatmarket building breaking down two maple trees en route. There was a scare, a crushing of siding, but after all no great damage. * Oakfield.-The singing school, under the management of Wm. DANIELS, of South Alabama, is progressing finely. We can safely recommend Mr. D. as a first-class teacher. Our district school, taught by George M. BROWN, closes this week Friday. Mr. BROWN has taught a good school of about one hundred scholars, and as far as we can learn, all have made rapid progress. We regret that there are not more such teachers. Business is very dull. F.S. HACKLEY is constantly receiving cases of boots and shoes, which looks very much as though he means business. * Alexander.-Some of the lovers of literature here, in the absence of a lecture course or anything particularly entertaining during the winter months, formed a society which meets under the name of the Amphictyon Literary Society. The Society has a President, Vice President, and Secretary, and meets once a week at the house of some one of its members. The exercises consist of select reading by some person appointed the previous evening for that purpose, and reading from Shakespeare by the Society. The exercises prove very interesting and instructive. The Society met this week at the house of Thomas GUARD. A goodly number were in attendance. Its next meeting is to be next Tuesday evening at the house of Mrs. WITTER. I understand that the job of building the cheese factory has been given to a man from Batavia, he having bid the lowest, by $50, of any other man. The other bids ranged from $350 to $385. If I am any judge of the amount of work to be done upon said building, the man from Batavia will play a losing game. Some mechanics are so anxious to get jobs that they figure out of their own pockets, to say nothing of the harm they do the trade by such action. * Fire in Stafford.-On Wednesday morning of this week, the grocery store of Rufus GOULD was totally destroyed. Loss $1,200. Insured in Aetna $1,000. PAGE's shoe shop adjoining also burned. Loss $250--no insurance. Building owned by Mr. RATLIFF--worth about $500--insure in Le Roy. * submitted by Linda Schmidt

    3. Since finding time to do genealogy is hard for me, I try to post useful information on my Alabama, NY website. http://www2.pcom.net/cinjod/historian/ I have the Alabama section of Beers Gazetteer of 1890 posted at my site. The 3rd section has info on some of your Whites. It is transcribed exactly from the original text, so if you do a "find in page" you will also catch the whites that are under other family headings. Also check my cemeteries page. There are Whites buried in Wheatville and Reed cemeteries. I would browse the other pages of history in case they pop up in places I don't renember. ;-) I have about 80 pages to my site. I have a ton of new stuff to post but I need to find it a new home first. My first choice is to move it to Rootsweb, however, I've put two requests with no response so far. Guess they must be backed up with hosting requests. Can you tell me anything about your Benjamin White? I may have some info for you on him too, if it is the same one. 3. Progressive Batavian Batavia, Genesee County, New York State March 26-1875 Ghastly Accident.-On Friday last a little four year old son of Fred SUNRIKER, of Elba, while out in the yard playing with a butcher knife, in some way gouged it into the corner of his right eye so as to throw the ball of the eye out upon the cheek. Dr. WARNER, who was immediately called, put the eye back to its place, sewed up the gash and dressed the wound; and it is now hoped the eye can be saved. * Linden. - Nehemiah STEVENS of Bethany, met with a severe accident the 19th inst. He was in the woods with his son Walter drawing logs. His son was driving the team and Mr. STEVENS was walking near and beside the hind end of the log, when the sleigh slowed and the log struck his leg, breaking both bones below the knee. We understand it is a very bad fracture, and will probably lay him up for some time. Bad luck for Nehemiah, for he has a thousand maple trees that will soon require his care and attention when the sweet nectar begins to flow. be patient, Nehemiah, and keep as still as possible. Oscar PRESCOTT, while assisting his brother-in-law, Seth LINCOLN, in removing the ice from the dam at the time of the late flood, met with an accident which might have proved serious had not Mr. LINCOLN had the presence of mind to throw him a rope. Oscar fell in--took a good cold sousing--went under--but was rescued in the above manner. Oscar, be more careful, in the future, when around the water, if you have just joined the Good Templars. We understand James CAVANAUGH of Bethany came home from Batavia one day last week, and fell out of his buggy and broke his arm. A sad affair happened near Wright's Corners, in Middlebury, on Saturday night last, the 2d inst. Mr. Elinas DeWOLF's barn with its contents of hay, grain, farming tools, &c., was burned to the ground, and , worst of all, a valuable horse, a yoke of fat oxen, and two nobles cows perished in the flames. We understand the barn and its contents were fully insured; also the live stock, -the horse at $200, the oxen at $230, and the cows at $50 each. Mr. DeWOLF had just leased his farm, and had advertised his personal property at auction, the sale to take place on Monday last. It is thought to be the work of an incendiary. * submitted by Linda Schmidt *********************************************
