    3. Progressive Batavian Batavia, NY December 26-1879 # 4 Darien.-Christmas is coming and our town people are purchasing in neighboring larger places gifts which are brought home in a "big box, little box, band box, and bundle," and which the children are not allowed to investigate. Our enterprising merchant, Mr. ___let, in order to keep apace with the demand of the times and supply the wants of all, has placed on his counter a stock of five cent goods, which take well. The quarterly services of the M.E. Church were held at the Center last Sabbath. The sermon by the Presiding Elder, Rev. Mr. Huntington of Buffalo, was interesting, showing very plainly the contrast between a Christian and a worldling, or as he called it, "the old man and the new." His illustrations were happy and to the point. There is on exhibition at Mr. Mullett's store some very fine pieces of crayon work, which show that the artist, Miss Mullett, is one who thoroughly understands her profession. The Greenbackers of the town still live, and so does their "rag baby," the Darien Journal, which completed its first year with the last number. As it was a good, healthy, wide-awake boy (we can't call it a baby any longer), its parents have decided to nurse it tenderly for another year, allowing it to cry semimonthly as heretofore. Its cry is musical to all except when it crys[sic] for "rags! rags! rags!" There was a painful, and at the time thought to be serious, accident occurred at our school one day last week. Hiram, son of Lucius Getman, while playing, collided with one of the larger boys with such force as to knock him down, striking his right eye in such a manner as to cause it immediately to swell and turn black. He has now so far recovered as be able to see a little from it. submitted by Linda Web-Page Editor for Bethany BETHANY: Its Past and Present ~ Bethany Town Page http://www.arkwebshost.com/family/bluebird/TownOfBethany.shtml Contributor for the BUFFALO and Western NYS Website: www.buffalonian.com ~ History Through Newspapers

    3. Progressive Batavian Batavia, NY December 26-1879 # 3 Pavilion. - Willie Graves is off for a holiday visit in Tioga County. Enoch Heath and family will spend the holidays in Franklinville. An elevator has just been put in the new ware-house. It was made by L.S. Graves, Rochester. Rans Hutchinson has purchased a set of Forsyth's hay scales which he has placed at the ware-house. "Baby" street is appropriately named. Wm. Lortz now comes to the front with a fine specimen of baby. Willis Culver left town last Tuesday for Baltimore, Md., where he will engage in the nursery business. Success attend, you, m'boy. Mr. James Lyons, formerly of Midland railroad of Canada, has been installed telegraph operator at the depot, vice Maggie Weber. Steps are being taken to organize an A.O.U.W. lodge in this place. Everything is about ready for a start. Next week we will give further particulars. The quarterly meeting of the official board of the M.E. Church will be held at Covington on Saturday. On Wednesday next the annual meeting for the election of trustees will be held at the church in this village. The M.E. Church is now permanently supplied with a pastor in the person of Rev. S.C. Farnham. Mr. F. came here direct from New Hampshire. He is, as has been intimated, a man of ability and energy, and all concerned are highly gratified. On Wednesday evening of next week Miss Julia Young of Morganville will give a reading in the Presbyterian Church building under the auspices of the Pavilion Library Society. Miss Young is spoken of very highly by those who have had the pleasure of hearing her. The breach of promise suit, spoken of two weeks ago, was witnessed by a large and amused audience. Lillie Nobles personated her character (Kate Snarling, complainant.) to a dot. Mr. Fickle, the defendant, personated by Humphrey Maddock, was a most accommodating witness. The affair wound up with a conciliation and bridle[sic] scene. It hath been murmured about that one of our sprightliest and prettiest young ladies has taken unto herself another, not a better half. It is understood that the contracting parties are Miss _____ [sic] and Mr. ____[sic]. The whole affair being shrouded in secrecy and mystery we won't venture any positive assertion. If so, Frank, you're a lucky dog any way. A few weeks since a few active Christians, seeing the need of a work in this village, banded themselves together for the purpose of holding cottage prayer meetings. Thus far they have been very much encouraged in the work and will continue to hold them. The next meeting will be held at the residence of Mr. Wm. Gilmore. Present indications point to a successful revival in Pavilion ere long. Who says Pavilion has no manufacturing interests? Having just completed a dozen swell body cutters, part of which are already sold, Mr. Buckingham is now getting out material for as many lumber wagons for the spring trade. DeWitt Bond has shipped during the past fall and winter seven car loads of turned handles for farming tools, each car holding 10,000 to 12,000 handles. In addition to all this we have two patent medicine manufacturies in the place. Go in! 1. [NYGENESE] GRIMES in Linden, Bethany, Batavia
    2. F. Bailey
    3. Among the first settlers to Linden, Genesee County, New York, were Alexander, Jacob, and Andrew GRIMES. My 3g grandmother, Caroline GRIMES, was said to come to Linden with her "father's family" in 1820. I am trying to learn of that family. Records of the census appear to rule out Alexander and Jacob, leaving Andrew the likely father. Caroline GRIMES was born in 1806, Boston, Massachusetts. She married about 1835, prob. New York, Elisha P. WELLS. Widowed early, she raised three sons on her own and never re-married. I would appreciate any information you might share on this branch of the GRIMES family. Thank you, Sally Bailey fbsb@earthlink.net

    3. Progressive Batavian Batavia, Genesee Co., NY December 26-1879 A Hornellsville firm got up a lumber wagon to order in first-class style in just a week, the 'Herald' says. A horse reared and fell on Wilber Eastwood of Mt. Morris a few days ago, and fatally injured him. James Prendergast, a wealthy and public spirited citizen of Jamestown, died unexpectedly on Monday last. The Medina 'Register' has been, as it says itself, "literally turned inside out." Its first page is now its local page. The Erie County District Attorney has notified the newspapers of that county not to publish any lottery advertisements. A new Chautauqua Lake boat, of large proportions and elegant finish, called the Enterprise, is being constructed at Mayville. Andrew Breen of Avon was kicked by a horse the other day and had his skull fractured. Breen will probably live--so will the horse. A chandelier fell in the Lima Methodist Church recently, and set fire to and burned three or four seats and several yards of carpet. Attorney General elect, Hamilton Ward of Allegany, has bestowed the position of clerk in his office upon Ellery Davis of Belmont. George W. Burt, the defeated candidate for Sheriff of Livingston Co., has been appointed Superintendent of the County Insane Asylum. Randall Pratt of Warsaw fell from a scaffold one day recently, a distance of twenty feet, breaking his collar bone, and otherwise injuring him. Riley Jones of Rushford, Allegany County, recently set a trap for a skunk and caught an American eagle which measured 6 1/2 feet from tip to tip. Rochester, the flower or flour city, spell it as you choose, has degenerated, and is now universally known as the beer city. The new name is appropriate, too. Messrs. Loss and McRae of Albion have been awarded a contract of $6,000,000 on the Canadian Pacific Railroad extending from the Pacific coast east. The Attica 'Argus' has yielded, and after January first the subscription price will be $1.50 per year. To make a living out of a newspaper at $1 per year is pretty hard work. The Western New York Home for the orphans and destitute children, at Randolph, Cattaraugus County, has 39 children under its care. The institution is doing a noble work. One of the Niagara Falls fancy bazaars was burglarized of $500 worth of goods the other night. The thief is probably some vindictive fellow who is trying to even up business with the Falls people a little. A few days since A.C. Cleveland, the well-known grain buyer for Coleman of Castile was seriously injured at the Silver Lake railroad depot, by getting his right arm caught between the bumpers of some cars he attempted to couple. The Brockport 'Democrat' says "a gentleman from Le Roy, for the past week has been drilling the congregation of the Methodist Church at East Rush, not for salt, but for congregational singing. Choir singing is to be abandoned hereafter." The Orleans County Board of Supervisors "believe the present militia law entails upon the people of the State an unnecessary and useless burden, and that the organization and maintenance of uniformed companies, especially in rural counties, serves no good purpose." A disastrous fire raged in Addison, Steuben Co., one day last week, and destroyed twenty buildings, mostly business stores. The fire originated in a grocery store, but whether accidental or incendiary it is not stated. The loss is variously estimated from $100,000 to $150,000. The name of George Crawley, which appeared in the Rochester "Blue Book" (a book wherein the names of persons who are indebted to some of the city firms are printed), occasioned that young gentleman to attempt to commit suicide a few days ago. He was collector for the Rochester 'Union.' He will probably recover. January 2d, 1880, and thereafter, the Wyoming County 'Herald' will be issued simultaneously every Friday , at Perry and Castile. The Castile office will be under charge of Mr. George C. King, a gentleman of ability and experience, who has for the last two years been connected with this journal. Dr. Hugh MacGregor Wilson and Mrs. Adeline C. Hotchkiss, former residents of Niagara County, but late residents of Detroit, were indicted by the Niagara Co. grand jury the other day for the alleged poisoning of Geo. C. Hotchkiss of Youngstown, twenty years ago. submitted by Linda Web-Page Editor for Bethany BETHANY: Its Past and Present ~ Bethany Town Page http://www.arkwebshost.com/family/bluebird/TownOfBethany.shtml Contributor for the BUFFALO and Western NYS Website: www.buffalonian.com ~ History Through Newspapers

    3. Spirit of the Times Batavia, NY May 25-1852 Mount Morris Dam Several Whig papers are crowing lustily over the breaks at the Mount Morris Dam, by which the navigation of the Genesee Valley Canal is unavoidably retarded. Some vent their reproaches upon Commissioner Follett, others attribute them to the mismanagement of Mr. Martindale, the Superintendent, and others, in order that no delinquent shall escape, casts the blame upon the Democratic party in general. The Dam across the Genesee River at Mt. Morris, has for several years required much nursing and repairing, and was left in a somewhat precarious condition by the late Whig Canal Board. It is at best, (like that Canal, itself,) a very troublesome and expensive affair. The great force of the current at that place, and the liability of the Genesee to sudden and heavy freshets, subject it to these disasters. Work was commenced at the Dam early in the season, and experienced Engineers have been constantly employed ever since, with a large force of helpers. The spring is usually considered a bad time to repair Dams, but this spring, as every one knows, has been one of almost incessant rains, the Genesee River has been continuously swollen, and the difficulties of making the necessary repairs thereby rendered doubly harassing. The Superintendent, as we are credibly informed, has been unremitting in his efforts at that point, and for weeks together has not left the place, at all, night or day. The plans for stopping the several breaks were furnished by the Engineers, and the Superintendent had only to carry out those plans with all possible faithfulness and energy, which it is conceded he has done. On Saturday the 15th inst. Mr. McAlpine the State Engineer and Commissioner Follett, visited Mt. Morris--examined the work thoroughly and gave such further directions as were thought advisable. They both expressed the opinion that the Superintendent had followed closely the plans of the Engineer--that those plans were the best that could be devised, and that the Superintendent had been very thorough and faithful in his efforts. The work was nearly completed when the late sudden rise in the water proved too strong for the unfinished portion which was thus assaulted in its most critical condition.--A small part of the dam only was swept away, the balance remaining in admirable condition. The breach will be repaired with the utmost despatch, and navigation will be resumed in a few days. Fatal Casualty On Saturday morning last, Charles Thayer, a young man about 19 years of age, son of Augustus Thayer of this village, came to his death in the following manner. He was employed as a brakeman on the Buffalo and Rochester railroad. At Attica when the train was backing up for the purpose of hitching on some freight cars, young Thayer seated himself on the rear of the moving train, with his feet hanging near the ground, to be ready to couple the cars when they came together. While in this situation one of his feet caught in the "Frog" of the track, which pitched him lengthwise on the rail in such a way that the wheels ran over him diagonally from the foot that was fast, to the opposite shoulder, crushing him in an awful manner. His mangled body, not yet bereft of life, was taken to the Depot, and a locomotive and tender despatched with all speed to the place, for his Father and Mother, who reached him a few minutes after he expired, which was about three hours after the accident. His funeral, which was conducted according to the Order of the Sons of Temperance, of which he was a worthy member, took place on Sunday at the Presbyterian Church, and a very numerous prosession followed him to the grave, where the appropriate chosen ones of the 'Sons' were performed. submitted by Linda Web-Page Editor for Bethany BETHANY: Its Past and Present ~ Bethany Town Page http://www.arkwebshost.com/family/bluebird/TownOfBethany.shtml Contributor for the BUFFALO and Western NYS Website: www.buffalonian.com ~ History Through Newspapers
