Hi Alfred: I have not been able to really pin down Dr. Moses J. Hill's family. There seems to be several HILL families in that NY area at that time who might be his parents. I do know that he came from an educated family, so the fact that your family were teachers and engineers might be a connection. Moses J Hill was a frontier Doctor in the 1830s in Lagrange county Indiana. On the census he showed his birth place as NY and his wife birth in CT. It looks like his wife's name was Betsey. We think that Moses' middle name was Jones. So it is possible his mother or grandmother may have had the maiden name of Jones. He gave one of his sons the middle name of Newell, so that is another possibility for a family name. I have a date of Mose's birth as 30 Jan 1783 in stephentown, NY. The names of his children are: Moses Newell Hill born 24 Jul 1811 NY Slocum Hill about 1812 Marvin Jones Hill 27 Apr 1813 Laura Hill born 28 May 1815 - (Laura married Washington Adams in 1832 in Lagrange County IN.) Hiram H. Hill born 17 Apr 1819 Eliza Hill born 24 Apr 1824. All children were born in NY. I hope that we can find some other researchers who are looking at some of these other children who may help in connecting Moses Jones Hill to his proper parents and ancestors. John Nicholas and Elizabeth Michel Youngpeter lived in Johnsonburg, town of Orangeville, Wyoming Co. NY from about 1860 to 1900. They are buried in St. Nicholas RC Cemtery in North Java. Their children were all girls, married to Schwab, Mergas, Zehler, Edwards and Williams. Looking for any information on these families. Belgium was their place of birth per death certificates. John and Elizabeth were great great grandparents of Donald Hall. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail SpamGuard - Read only the mail you want.
Is anyone on line that lives in Genesee county that could do a look up for me? I am looking for the marriage of Dr. Moses J. Hill to a Betsey Winslow in 1810 in Genesee County, NY. It is shown in the IGI. I am looking for her parentage and to confirm that Moses J. Hill was a doctor. I know that Dr. Moses J. Hill was in Lagrange Indiana with his wife Betsey ?? and children in the 1830s. He was born in NY and Betsey was born in CT. First known child was born in 1813 so marriage in 1810 would be close. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could check on this. I am looking to connect Dr. Moses Jones Hill and his wife Betsey with their proper parents and ancestor lines. Thank you again! I am looking to confirm the marriage of Moses HILL to Betsey WINSLOW about 1810 in Genesee county, NY. Is there a marriage index out there that could confirm this and provide Betsey's parentage? Thank you for your help. Perry Adams
Perry I would start by looking for Dr Hill in the 1830 census. Then the 1840 and 1850 census and even the 1860 census as they are usually done just before the time period that he died. And usually there is a listing of people who have died in the previous few months.. The earlier censuses only list the head of household but starting in 1850 they list the entire household. I would also look in Lagrange for a death and burial. Do you know where the children of Moses and Betsey were born? If Ct, it might be a clue to where in Ct they were married) From there I would branch out to towns surrounding Lagrange until I found him. I would look at what large hospitals were in existance at the times of death-- is it possible that he died in a hospital ? I would also contact all decendants of Moses and Betsey that I could locate and pick their brains to see if perhaps they have more information than you do. Was Moses a prominent man in his county where Lagrange is located? I would check the county records and the historical and genealogical societies in that area. I also notice that for some reason you have posted this listing on a Ny Genese County e-mail list. Did they at one time live in NY? If so I would check newspapers for articles and/or obituaries in that county. Some of my ancestors lived in Genese county and when searching I have seen obits for folks who died elsewhere but were well enough known in NY that the obit was sent back there. If he was a medical Dr that might very well be the case in this instance. One other idea although he would have been 77 in 1860. Is it possible that he served as a Dr in the Civil War? I hope this gives you some ideas and please feel free to contact me if you need furthur help. Judie PS do you belong to an e-mail lis for Illinois? We are looking to connect our Dr. Moses J. HILL with his proper parents and ancestors as well as to connect his wife Betsey ? with her family. We know that Dr. Hill was born in NY 30 Jan 1783 and his wife Betsey was born in the same year in CT. Their first children were born in 1813 so their marriage was probably around that time in CT. Dr. HILL and his family moved to Lagrange IN about 1830 and in 1832 his daughter Laura HILL married Washington ADAMS in Lagrange. Dr. HILL's son Moses N. Hill married that same year (1832) to Nancy Martin. Washington ADAMS and his wife Laura HILL moved to Mt. Carrol, IL about 1853. They had three children: Mary J ADAMS, Moses ADAMS and Martha ADAMS. Mary J. ADAMS married Andrew J. CHRISTIAN in 1861 in Mt. Carrol, IL. Although we do not know where Dr. Moses HILL is buried other than in Illinois, we thought it possible that he lived in Mt. Carrol IL since his daughter and son-in-law lived there. Dr. Hill died 29 Jun 1860 and his wife Betsey in 1855. Does anyone have information on these families so that we can trace their ancestors? Thank you for your help. Perry Adams San Carlos, California

Dear Bethany History Keepers, And To Those of You Historians and Interested Area Residents, Our local town board of Bethany held their January meeting this week; it has been **summarized, below** for you by Jane Schmieder, who many of you know as our local "Town Hall Preservation Advocate": ** I was in attendance last night at a regular town board meeting at the Old town hall, and I learned: -Clark Patterson, Inc., representative was there, Jon, and he had revised floor plans for new building renovations, and they completed interviews with town officials on Dec 18th or so. Seemed focused on furniture, computer plug-ins, and toilets. I did not see the revised floor plans he handed out to them - I asked if they had completed the conveyance of the new building to the Town, they said no, and it seemed to be a lawyer-delay - I asked when they plan to move, and they said when construction is completed, which they estimate to be Dec 2004. Construction bids to begin in April 2004 and construction to start in June - I asked what happened with the buyer, and found out that they dont want to negotiate with him until they are more certain that the new building is a go. I asked his name, they said Ackerman of Paradise Road, they said he is very eager and wants to buy the building asap, but they only want to lease it to him at this point anyway. He wants to use upstairs for a dance school, downstairs for some kind of retail store, and allow room for a historian or history group to share a part of the building. Please disseminate the info to others of the fine Bethany crowd!! Happy New Year! Dear Mr. O'Leary, I read with interest your inquiry in regard to the 1876 Atlas of Genesee Co. Personally, I have found the maps from that atlas have served as an invaluable means to identifying many citizens and their residences of the late 1800s. Enclosed, below, is a newspaper article of 1876, which I transcribed and submitted to this list, earlier this year; it will give you some background information about the atlas. I hope that it will prove helpful and useful to you. Linda Progressive Batavian Newspaper Batavia, Genesee County, New York State July 14-1876 The New Century Atlas. The new Genesee County Atlas, published by Messrs. EVERTS, ENSIGN, & EVERTS, is now being delivered to subscribers in this county. We have had but a slight opportunity to examine the work and therefore can only say that the cuts of houses, places of business &c., are well executed--a little flattering of course--but very fine. The portraits are mostly, very true to life. With regard to the accuracy of farm and town lines, roads, &c., we think the work to be correct, so far as we are able to judge from personal knowledge. Its history and reminiscences we have not had time to read, but have no reason to doubt they are correct and interesting. The gentlemen who had charge of this department of the work appeared to be energetic and thorough in their researches and doubtless the work proves they were careful and accurate in the compilation of the facts gathered. If, as we suppose, the work be accurate in all its departments, it will be one of great value not only now but hereafter. The 'Advocate,' which has given the book a more thorough investigation, says: It is a most artistic publication, containing 141 pages, and embracing a Map of the United States; a Map of the State of New York; a Climalotogical Map of the United States; a Geological Map of the United States; a Map of Genesee County; Maps of the villages of Batavia, Le Roy, Elba, town of Alabama, villages of Linden, Pavilion, East Bethany, Bethany Center, Alabama Center, South Alabama, village of Alexander, town of Alexander, villages of Morganville, Roanoke, Stafford, Tonawanda Falls, Byron Center, Harris' Mills, Town of Batavia, villages of North Bergen, Cary, Wheatville, town of Bergen, town of Bethany, village of Bergen, town of Byron, town of Darien, villages of Darien City, Darien Center, Oakfield Corners, East Oakfield, town of Elba, town of Le Roy, town Oakfield, town of Pavilion, villages of Corfu, East Pembroke, town of Pembroke, villages of North Pembroke, Pembroke or Richville Station, South Byron, Lancton's Corners, and the town of Stafford. By this it will be readily seen that, so far as maps are concerned, the work is an unusually extensive and comprehensive one. Of Lithographic Views there are 53 in Batavia; 6 in Alabama; 8 in Alexander; 3 in Bergen; 6 in Bethany; 8 in Byron; 18 in Darien; 15 in Elba; 13 in Le Roy; 5 in Oakfield; 8 in Pavilion; 13 in Pembroke; and 17 in Stafford. Of Portraits there are one hundred and thirty one, of many of the most prominent citizens of the county. Of Personal Sketches there are thirty six, of such men as Judge PINGLE, Hon. H.J. REDFIELD, Dean RICHMOND, Cyrenius WALKER, Stephen RANDALL, R.O. HOLDEN, Dr. CURTIS, Samuel RICHMOND, A.H. GREEN, Hon. J.C. GARDNER, and others equally well known. It also contains a list of County Officers, from the organization of the county; a History of Genesee County; Histories of the towns and villages in the county; Business Cards, and Patrons' Directory of Genesee County. As a specimen of artistic work the Atlas is far ahead of anything of the kind we have ever seen. Messrs. EVERTS, ENSIGN, & EVERTS have done all and much more than they promised in their Prospectus, and we know that their Illustrated Atlas cannot fail to give the most unbounded satisfaction to their patrons. * submitted by Linda Schmidt Web-Page Editor for Bethany BETHANY, Genesee Co.
