Mrs. Walsh has been in poor health for two years, and for the last year has been a great sufferer, but bore her sufferings without a murmur, and waited patiently for the messenger of Death to call her home. The deceased was formerly the husband of Warren Hawkins, who died in Alexander in 1857. She afterwards married Thomas Walsh, who died in Omaha about eight years ago, since that time she has resided with her parents. The father and mother are still living, and in good health, the father being 83, the mother 75. They are old residents of Alexander, having lived here since 1836. The mother was sister to Taylor Goodell, formerly of Attica. They have reared thirteen children, then of whom are now living. Nine of them were present at the funeral. R.G. Avery, Jr., one of the sons is conductor on the Buffalo and Jamestown railroad, and John G. Avery, another son, is one of the proprietors of the Continental Hotel in Buffalo. The children all occupy respectable positions, and what is specially commendable in these children is the fact that for a long number of years it has been their practice to meet around the parental table once in each year, and it is the especial pride of these children to amply provide for the support of their aged parents. 2. Hi Rachel, You're probably safe in assuming that he did work fairly close to where he lived if you're talking around the turn of the century. The problem here is that there were LOADS of small schools around back then.....AND, Mount Morris is in Livingston County, not Genesee, so if you think that he lived in Mt. Morris at the time he was teaching, you probably need to search for one of the schools out that way. SORRY! HAPPY HUNTING! 1. Rider (Ryder)
    2. John F. Crossen
    3. In searching for a Patriot for my father, I had to rule out the Underhills. They were Loyalists from Winchester County, NY. However, I hit paydirt with the Rider family! This is what I have: John Rider (Ryder), 1732-1812. He was a private in the 2nd Regiment, New York Line, three years service. He also served in at least one militia group out of Dutchess County, NY. His daughter Esther A. Rider married John Underhill. Their son, Arza Underhill (1811-1901), of Alabama, NY, would be my father's great-grandfather. So... Here's a Patriot in the family! What else might you folks know about the Riders? 3. Thanks to Dorothy and Wilfred for their help re: the ancestors of Adelbert Thompson (1846-1919). Dad is going to be making application to the SUVCW through Del, who was a private in Capt. Rogers' Company, 19th NY Light Artillery. Del saw some pretty hair-raising action at Cold Harbor in 1864. He was one of only a few who were still standing after a Reb attack on their position--he kept the cannons firing! Somewhere I have Prentice or Prentiss Thompson down for his father. I did not have his mother. I'll investigate. On the family's origins prior to the REvolution: Washington County, NY and before that, Palmer, Mass. More to check! We have a superb genealogy library at the capitol in Phoenix--this will be #1 to research next week. What do you folks have on the Duers family in Genesee County? Del married Elsie Duers in 1864. Their only son, William H. Thompson, was born in 1867. 1. FIRMAN BIOGRAPHY
    2. Betty Thomas
    3. Hello, These are not my relatives, but I thought someone might like to have the history for their records. It came from the: "1892 Portrait & Biographical Album of Genesee, Lapeer & Tuscola Counties, Chapman Bros", in Michigan. Hope it helps someone. Colleen myscolleen@hotmail.com JOSIAH FIRMAN is a farmer residing on section 14, Flushing Township, Genesee County. He was born in Avon, Genesee County, N. Y., May 14, 1822, and is a son of Jonathan G. and Marilla (Martin) Firman, natives of the same State. The former was a farmer, and coming to Michigan in 1824, settled in Bloomfield, Oakland County. Thence he removed to Genesee County and settled in the town of Mundy where he took up Government land. They had to cut their own roads through the forests for a mile and a half. There his wife died and after a residence of ten years upon the farm our subject's father went to Macomb County and devoted himself to farming until the latter years of his life when he removed to Utica, same county, and there resided until his decease. Our subject was one of eleven children, of whom only three are now living--he of whom we write, Marilla and Amanda. Josiah Firman received his education in Oakland County, this State, and was reared a farmer lad. He remained at home until twenty-three years of age and then purchased a farm in Mundy Township. It comprises eighty acres and was his home for four years. Previous to beginning life as a farmer he was married, his nuptials being solemnized November 30, 1845, and his bride being Jane Smith, a daughter of Oren and Mary (Conklin) Smith, natives of Vermont and New York respectively, who were pioneer settlers in Michigan. They lived in various places and engaged in farming but finally settled in Mt. Morris, where Mr. Smith died in his eighty-first year. His wife's decease took place at the home of our subject when she was seventy-four years of age. After leaving Mundy Township Mr. Firman moved to Flint and was there engaged in peddling for about two years. Later he engaged in teaming for twelve years and then ran an ashery for two years, thence he went to Genesee County, and bought in partnership with his father-in-law eighty acres of land upon which he lived for fourteen years. The former moved to Flushing Township in 1880 and purchased eighty acres of land where they now live. Three childre have brightened and enriched the home life of our subject and his wife--Oren G., Nettie and Orlo. The eldest son married Adelia Curtis; Nettie is now Mrs. Nining and is the mother of two children--Oren E. and Ervin J. One son, who is deceased, was named Alfonso; he married Mina Smith and became the father of two children--Jessie J. and Asa J. He died in 1887 at the age of thirty-four years. Politically our subject is a Republican. He and his wife are members of the Baptist Church. They have a fine home and hold a high position among the best class of people. Mrs. Firman was born in Rochester, N. Y., June 13, 1825. She attended school at Mendon, Monroe County, N. Y. and on coming West attended school at Grand Blanc, Genesee County. She commenced teaching when fifteen years old, her first school being in Mundy Township on the State road. The session continued three months during the winter and three months during the summer. She received for her services $1 per week and "boarded round." In the early days the family had some unique experiences and the family gun stood ready in an accessible corner for any emergency, for bears were known to be fond of young pig and such stock could not be well spared from the scanty supply. 1. FAILING BIOGRAPHY
Colleen myscolleen@hotmail.com LEVI FAILING. One of the most beautiful rural homes in Flushing Township, Genesee County, is owned by the gentleman whose name is quoted above. It is an encouraging example to ambitious young men of small means and unpromising prospects, that the owner of so beautiful a place and such a successful man in commercial life and one who has made himself a position in the cominity should have begun most humbly and have won by his perseverence and energy every foot of ground which he now holds. His place is located on section 3, Flushing Township, and comprises two hundred and forty-four acres of land. Mr. FAILING was born in Genesee County, N.Y., January 30, 1819, and is a son of Henry and Nancy (NELLIS) FAILING, both natives of the Empire State. Our subject lost his father when very young and when only six years old, was bound out on a farm to Mr. Chaney BIRD. He was with him for eight years and then began working for himself at black-smithing in the town of Byron, N.Y. He was engaged as a journeyman for some time. Our subject came to Michigan in the fall of 1844 and settled in Gaines Township, Genesee County. He employed himself at his trade and had a small piece of land upon which he lived for two years. He then went to Bloomfield, Oakland County, and there lived for four years working at this trade. He later purchased eighty acres of land near Davisonville, Genesee County, and while improving the place was engaged also at his trade. He then moved to Flint and started in business with Mr. WICKS and continued the partnership for one year. After the dissolution of the partnership our subject started for California and was gone three years. While there he secured a gold mine, which he had worked by others while he devoted himself to his trade. On returning to Flint he built a shop and conducted the blacksmithing work. He sold out and in 1880 he purchased whereon he now lives. Mr. FAILING was married in 1836 to Miss Jane KESLER, a native of Orleans County, N.Y., and a daughter of John and Polly (EVESON) KESLER, native of the Mohawk Valley. They moved to Michigan in 1847 and settled in the township of Davison, this county, and were there employed in farming until the decease of the father. They had a family four of children, who are: Mrs. FAILING, Beers, Jerome, and Elsie, (Mrs. TAYLOR.) Our subject's father's family comprises only two living children - Maria, now Mrs. ROGERS, and he of whom we write. Mr. and Mr. FAILING have had six children - Polly, Nancy, Orcelia, and Rosetta. Polly, now Mrs. WRIGHT, has one child - Claud; Nancy, Mrs. H. CROW, has two children - Henry E. and Winnie Mary; Orcelia, Mrs. JOHNSON, has one child - Fern F.; Rosetta is at home; two children died in infancy - Julia Ann and Alice Locadie; they are all finely educated and are exceptionally good musicans. Our subject is a Republican. He and his family are Christian people, who are generous in their support of churches and schools. Mr. FAILING breeds fine Clydesdale horses. He also breeds Durham cattle and has a fine flock of Saxon Down sheep. His home is a model of neatness and artistic arrangement and his barns are capacious and well built. 1. BILLINGS BIOGRAPHY
Colleen myscolleen@hotmail.com HON. SIMEON R. BILLINGS, a well-known citizen of Richfield Township, Genesee County, and a native of New York, was born in Gaines Township, Orleans County, March 17, 1835. His father was Col. L. BILLINGS, and he was born in New York in 1801, while his mother, Roxana C. REXFORD, was born the same year in the same State, and died at the age of eighty-nine years. The father had a whole section of land when he first located in this State, and he did a great work in improving and cultivating this property. He was a Republican in his political sentiments, a man of fine presence, and having a superior voice, made a fine appearance at the head of his regiment. He filled the office of Highway Commissioner, and held other positions trust, and died July, 1887. Capt. Joseph BILLINGS, the grandfather of our subject, was a New Englander by birth, and an early settler in Chenango County, N.Y., where he took up three hundred and fifty acres of Government land, upon which he lived for seventy-five years, filling important official positions in the township. Simeon REXFORD, the maternal grandfather of Mr. BILLINGS, took up land in the same county, and built the first mill which was established therein, dying at the age of eighty years. The parents of our subject had five sons and one daughter, all of whom grew to maturity. Simeon remained in his native place until he reached the age of thirty-one, having completed his schooling at the Albion Academy, and having taught for two years. His first marriage took place, October 3, 1861, in Orleans County, N.Y., and his bride was Carrie E. GRAY, a native of that county. There the young couple settled upon the farm which the young man had bought of his father, until they came to Michigan six years later and purchased one hundred and twenty-seven acres of land in Genesee County, where he now resides. It was already partially improved, and was soon under cultivation. One daughter and one son blessed this union, Bertha H. and William G. The death of Mrs. Carrie BILLINGS took place April 27, 1868, and the second marriage of our subject was November 17, 1869, his bride being Miss Nancy R. ASHLEY, a native of Davison township, this county, and to her has been given one daughter, Carrie E. Mr. BILLINGS has been from his first coming to this County a man of mark, and one whose influence is broad and powerful throughout the county. Many official positions have been tendered him, and in every place which he has filled, has been thorough and systematic, and the duties of the office have been discharged with an eye single to welfare of the community. He held the office of County Surveyor from 1869 to 1875, and was elected Supervisor during the following years, 1872, 1873, 1877, and 18. He filled the position of Representative for this district in the State Legislature in 1875 and 1877, and was sent to the State Senate by the Nineteenth Senatorial District in 1879 and 1881. While a member of that body he was on various important committees, and in all cases remembered not only the necessities of his constituents, but the welfare and prosperity of the State.
