Leslie, In my email I wrote: > If memory serves me right Wolcottsville is in the > northern part of the county, near or on the shore of Lake > Ontario. Apearently my memory does NOT serve me right, because I was looking at a map and found out I was wrong on the location of Wolcottsville, within Niagara County. Today I found this site that tells the name of the county, but also will show the location on a map. Since our tax dollars paid for the site we should all use it. Here is the link; http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form and this map clearly shows that Wolcottsville is clearly in the South East part of Niagara County. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi Kevin, I have a Thompson link, but the information I have is very vague. What is known (or surmised) is that my ancestor, Russell WARREN, married c. 1826/1827 Emily THOMPSON in what was then Genesee County (now Wyoming) possibly in the Orangeville area, as Russell's older brother, William Warren, had settled there earlier. They were sons of Caleb and Rachel (WEBSTER) WARREN of Hampton, Washington County, New York. There was another William Warren, son of Jabish/Jabez Warren who came very early, but he later moved to Aurora in Erie County. They were cousins. (Also, Rachel Webster Warren was a cousin of Elizur Webster who founded Warsaw...AND Caleb's half-sister became Elizur's wife!). Ah, the interwoven tapestries! According to Beer's History of Wyoming County, both Russell Warren and Emily Thompson were from Washington County; Russell came in 1826 and Emily came in 1824. Emily most likely came with her parents, who MAY have been Nathan and Phebe Thompson. After their marriage, Emily and Russell Warren lived in East Orangeville and raised a large family there. Emily Thompson Warren died 21 Mar 1877 and is buried at Orangeville Center Cemetery; stone is now broken. Russell's name was also on the stone, but discovered he migrated to Minnesota to be near two grown children after Emily's death and he died and was buried there. Supposedly, Nathan and Phebe Thompson had 8 children: Cyrus, Abigail, Sylvia, Caroline---born 5 May 1811 Poultney, VT and died 21 May 1872 at possibly Ronald, Michigan, married DANIEL HEATH in 1831, possibly in Washington Co., NY????; William, Edwin, Polly, and Emily. Anyone else searching these names? I'd appreciate any help! Leslie, I have the 1860 French'd Gazetteer and Lockport is noted as being in Niagara Co. in 1860. Wolcottsville is not in the index. I also have another index for this book which has surnames of people in the Gazetteer. What were their names? Since this no longer is Genesee Co. info., you might want to e-mail me directly. Hello Everyone, Looking at the maps that I have, I cannot tell to any degree of certainly in which county Wolcottsville, NY lies. I have been given the impression that it may be right where Erie, Niagara, Orleans, and Genesee counties meet. I will appreciate any help I can get in trying to determine the correct county for this town since I want to try to obtain information (from the county records) which pertain to Wolcottsville. Some of my husband's ancestors were in the area of Lockport and Wolcottsville during the time period of 1850-1868. TIA for any help anyone can provide. Leslie Bridges Kohler
In the town history section of my web site I just added histories for the following towns in Genesee County, NY: Batavia Darien Elba Leroy Oakfield These are all complete, except for Baravia, where the list of town officials are in a PDF file that is linked to. These list are long enoughf to make a seperate page for., if someone would like to type up one of the following list please let me know off of the list. SUPERVISORS TOWN CLERKS JUSTICES OF THE PEACE COMMISSIONERS OF HIGHWAYS ASSESSORS OVERSEERS OF THE POOOR SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS SCHOOL INSPECTORS Those are list of the names of people who served in those position since the Incorporaton of the town. I just added the town histories for the towns of Alexander, Bergen, Bethany and Byron, NY to the New York town history section of my web site. This makes a total of 84 New York town histories at the web site. These histories for Genesee County have are smaller than most of the other counties that I am outting online, but they do list all of the town officals (Supervisiors, Clerks and J.P.'s) up to when they were written in 1899, which could give you a little more info on some ancestors. More from Genesee County will be added as well as finsihing up the Counties that are only part finished. http://www.rays-place.com Cheers Ray Brown
I finally found what became of Bradley Allen of Elba, Genesee Co., NY. His wife, Isabel (Hobbs?) had the following obituary that tells all it is from Jamestown Twp., Steuben Co., IN. This obit. indicates that Isabel's maiden name is Hobbs, instead of Morris. I'm wondering what the source of the name Morris is. STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16, 1901, pg. 1, col. 1 ISABELL HOBBS ALLEN, 11 May 1807 - 10 Jan 1901 Mrs. Isabell Hobbs Allen was born in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, May 11, 1807, and died in Jamestown township, Steuben county, Indiana, January 10, 1901, aged 93 years, 7 months and 29 days. In early life she moved with her parents to Genesee county, N. Y. She was united in marriage with Bradley Allen, Feb. 22, 1827. Their home was in Genesee county until 1865, when they sold their farm and moved to Jamestown township, her late home, where her husband died May 7, 1872. Nine children were born to them, five of whom survive her - Orin B., of Elba, N.Y., Andrew, of Augusta, Mich., Eli and Almeda Allen and Mrs. Eugene Abramson, who have cared for her in her declining years. She was a kind companion, an affectionate mother, was loved by her children and respected by all who knew her. Funeral took place at the Best school house in Jamestown township, Saturday, Jan. 12, Elder C. S. Medbury officiating. I'm searching a Palmer family in Batavia, 3 children who were abandoned by their parents and given to W. Jarvis Maybee, a Minister and Superintendant of the National Children's Home Society, at least this is what the Batavia newspaper accounts of the abandonment indicate. There is a possiblity also that W. Jarvis Maybee was not a legitimate person; this being indicated in the various newspaper articles. In re-reading these this evening, I found information that could be helpful to someone searching a child given to Mr. Maybee for placement. The article states that her name was Edith or Hazel. The 1900 Census shows her as Hazel. Batavia Daily News Feb. 5, 1898......"Syracuse papers say that in his statement in regard to where he has placed certain children Mr. Maybee said that he found a desirable home for Edith or Hazel Vader in Batavia. Hazel Vader, who was then 2 1/2 years of age, was adopted on Oct. 21, 1895 by Letter-Carrier Ira Howe. She was delivered into his custody by James H. Meaghler, Superintenent of the :Poor in Syracuse, who stated that she had been deserted by her parents and had been a charge on the city of Syracuse for two years." 1900 Census, Batavia Village, 6 June, p 88 Ira J.
