    1. [NYFULTON] Migration from Fulton Co. to Iowa

    3. I'm trying to piece together the story of my great-grandfather's sister, who moved with her husband's family to Iowa shortly after 1880. If anyone has any knowledge of HOW people would have accomplished such a move at this time, or is familiar with any of the names and can add info, I'd sure appreciate having it for a family history I'm working on. Lydia Ripton, d/o Henry & Anna Ripton of Johnstown, married George A. Glenn, s/o Jacob & Hannah Glenn of Saratoga Co., about 1867 in Johnstown. In 1870 and 1880 they lived in Johnstown. In 1880 George's sister Fannie Glenn Hartley, w/o Alexander Hartley (who was the s/o Isaac and Sarah Hartley of Perth), had already moved to Ida Co. IA, and by 1885 Jacob and Hannah Glenn also lived in Ida Co. Lydia and George Glenn pushed on to western Nebraska, where a child was born in 1888, but several of their children eventually moved back to Iowa. George died in 1906 and Lydia died in 1913, both in Dawes Co., NE. As far as I know, the Ripton's lost track of Lydia and her family - certainly I never heard of relatives of my grandmother's living in Nebraska or Iowa (and when I and my young family moved from NY to Iowa in 1972, the family acted like we were going to the back side of the moon!). So how would such a family have traveled west in 1880? Train? Was it too late for wagons? I find it hard to visualize such a big move in that era, but I don't know much about transportation at the time. And is anyone working with the Hartleys of Perth or the Glenns from Saratoga? If so, I'd love to share info. Thanks for any help. Joanne Gaudio
