Hello Dick, I found you information useful and interesting. I am writing you, not only to thank you, but to give a little info. My family of Stewarts came to Johnstown in 1786, namely Robert, who bought a 100 acre farm near Sammonsville. I have his probate, dated 1837. His lawyer is a John Hillebrant, who appears to be a personal friend also. I was just wondering if this might be one of your family, even though the spelling is somewhat different? It seems there was a group who were friends: Daniel Cady, (father of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, he was also a Judge), Judge Stoutenberg, Robert's half brothers, Dugal and Donald Stewart and of course, Robert Stewart. John Hillebrant also worked with Robert on real estate purchases. I certainly admire your work with New York genealogy. I have spent quite a bit of time in Johnstown, Little Falls, Madison and Onondaga counties, following my Stewarts to Illinois. Thank you. Hi Bruce, Very kind words and very nice to hear from you. I suspect we are of a similar feather. The only STEWARTs that I have any information on are some very early ones that resided up near Cambridge and White Creek in Washington County, and I only have some gravestone information on them, no in depth details. My grandfather, Jacob HILLENBRAND, was the only son of an only son, and he immigrated in 1886. So I would have to go back many years in Europe to ever locate any HILLENBRAND or variant spellings of that name to which I would be related. I have taken the line back into the 1600's and they stayed pretty well in or very near the little village of Markelsheim. Thanks for thinking of it though. Please feel free to wander around through my website and Blogs. Hopefully you might come across something helpful, that's what it is for. I'll be off for a week in Fort Wayne, Indiana to the FGS conference next week. Let me know if there is anything that I might be able to help with. Best regards.
