    3. The Jacob BROWER that seems to be the progenitor of the Mayfield area Browers, seems from most of the census entries to indicate he was born 1786 in NJ, He was married to Phebe Hall and apparently in Fulton Co. by 1815. He died in Mayfield bet 1875 and 1880. Lee

    3. The northern part of Gloversville is Kingsboro. This area was settled by Sir William Johnson in the 1750's with Scots-Irish . It sat across the Iroquois War Trail from Canada just north of his home - enough said. The first industry was leather tanning. There was a large supply of tamarac bark ( the main ingredient for tanning fluid) available. The glove making indusrty grew from this base. The avaiabilty of good tranportation via the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers helped make this flourish. It also gave an easy route for the immigrants to he mills. First from England, then Italy, then from Eastern Europe.
