I found two color images of unnamed women. One is seated alone evidently reading a letter since there is an opened envelope on the floor. The other is of two women, one seated on the floor by a spinning wheel looking up lovingly at a woman seated in a chair by the window. Are these the pictures you saw? I have no evidence to suggest that these are Wells women although they might be. IF these photos were taken around 1900 and IF these are Wells women, I would suggest that the older one might be Sabra Margaret (Wells) Burr who would have been age 54 in 1900, but I have no idea who the younger woman might be. Note that the idea of this being Sabra is complete speculation on my part. I suspect that if the truth were known, these people were part of the reinactments that take place at Johnson Hall all of the time and were taken after Johnson Hall was made a historic site. A bit of research might turn up something. I assume that you found the photo of Catherine Howe Wells and of Mrs. Edward Wells. There was also a photo of a Judson Wells, but I do not know where he fits.

    2. Clyde J Getman
    3. Joanne, Here is a brief synopsis: Olive Dutton was born 16 Feb 1883, to Milton Dutton and Elizabeth Yauney. Her mother died 3 Dec 1883, age 27. Elizabeth's parents were David Yauney and Lisanda (or Lucinda?) Williamson. David and Levi were brothers. Olive's line back is Elizabeth Yauney (1856 - 1883), Lisanda Williamson (1837 - 1878), Elizabeth Getman (1817 - 1890) and Josiah Williamson (1817 - 1896) [also a Getman descendant], Benjamin Getman (1791- 1879) and Marytje Van Antwerp (1797 - 1883). Crawford (1834 - 1917) was a son of Benjamin and unmarried. I can send you more offline. Clyde J. Getman

    3. Does anyone know the parents of Ollie or Olive A. Dutton, born about 1882 in (I think) Fulton Co.? She lived with Levi and Lucinda Pratt Yauney in Ephratah as an adopted daughter in 1900 and with the widowed Lucinda in 1910. A newspaper item referred to her as Lucinda's niece, but the census always said adopted daughter. She married the minister Royal A. Stanton about 1914, and they lived in Ephratah in 1920 and in Albany Co., NY in 1930. Ollie Dutton was somehow a member of the family descended from Benjamin and Marijte (Mary) Van Antwerp Getman. Their son Crawford Getman (1834-1917) left money in his will to many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, one of whom was Ollie Dutton Stanton. I assume that her parents died before the 1900 census, and I can't identlify from which one of Crawford Getman's nieces or nephews she's descended. Thanks for any help anyone can give. Joanne Gaudio

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gRB.2ACE/1373.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: My great-great-grandmother was Hannah Murphy Leggins from Ireland and she did have a son named John. I believe John was born around 1894/95, so he would have been in his early/mid 20's in the 1920 census and the youngest of his siblings. The oldest was my great-grandmother Nellie. With a small black population I'm sure that there are still people that knew the family or are a part of the family. I'll certainly check the library and county clerk's office. I'd like to see Hannah's citizenship papers, they would be able to tell us something about her family. I have the names, addresses and phone numbers of the county clerks and libraries. I plan on making a few phone calls before I head up that way. I might be able to accomplish something over the phone or through the mail. Thanks for all of the useful information. I'll post my findings and let you know how things are going. Again, thanks and God bless. Deborah

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/gRB.2ACE/1185.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: FYI on Broadalbin records! The Broadalbin Cemetery records may have started in 1850 even though the cemetery was 50 or more years old at that time. Many of the records were reportedly lost when the drug store burned, and the owner was holding those records at his place of business. Records today seem to start at about 1939. This seems like quite a while ago, but not to a person working on genealogy. On churches-- The first Catholic church started around 1886, the Methodist church has a scattering of records (recorded in 1930 by the DAR) and on line. It is said that the pastors considered the records theirs and took them when they moved. The Baptist church burned to the ground in Nov. 1877 and anything they may have had were lost. The Presbyterian church supposedly has some records, but they are very protective of them and I have never had a chance to look at them. Vitals in the Town start in 1883 and vitals in the Village of Broadalbin did not start until after it was incorporated in 1924. I believe we all suffer with NYS brick walls.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/gRB.2ACE/1185.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hello, Kurt, Welcome to the Club of Searchers with Brick Walls in Montgomery/Fulton County. I may be a charter member of the Club, having hit the Brick Wall in 1963. In my experience, the records for this period are meagre. As you know, the census lists only the heads of families. Civil records were not required until much later. The churches were newly formed; many apparently had itinerent or shared pastors, who may have kept the records personally. Furthermore, some of the Protestant denominations (e.g. Baptist) did not record "vital" events. The cemeteries have been well-recorded, but as Mr. Cornell points out, these records are only the stones, not the sexton's records. All the towns are supposed to have a Town Historian, but often they, while helpful (like Mr. Cornell and his father before him), don't have much information about the early times. The land records are particularly frustrating. As apparently you know, the land was originally given to proprietors, many of whom held on to it for decades, leasing it to the actual inhabitants listed in the census. I have been unable to find leases, lot listings of the various grants or even precise grant locations. The Montgomery County Department of History and Archives has much information, including miscellaneous surname files, which they will search for an hourly fee ($25, I think). The LDS church has microfilmed the holdings of MCDH&A as well as those at the county courthouses at Fonda and Johnstown. Their catalog at www.familysearch.org lists just about everything extant. The Fulton and Montgomery sites in the USGenWeb also have good information gathered by dedicated volunteers. Our last hope may be privately-held family records. This is one of the values of these mailing lists. Or, at least, we have others with whom to commiserate! I hope this information is useful; please do not hesitate to ask for additional details.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/gRB.2ACE/831.1.1.2 Message Board Post: Any listings of "inhabitants" of Town of Broadalbin cemeteries would be more correctly labeled as lists of cemetery stones to be found in a particular cemetery. It is without question that MANY lie in unmarked graves, due to never receiving a stone or because it became broken and some uncaring person discarded it! Also, some have stones there and are buried in another cemetery. Another case finds a person with a name on two different stones, and obviously buried in but one of those graves. And on it goes !!!! Gordon Cornell, Caretaker, Broadalbin Mayfield Rural Cemetery (aka The Broadalbin Cemetery) and not the Broadalbin Village Cemetery as often listed on web sites.
