Author: grandmasasi Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.fulton/88.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: As you indicated that one of your ancestors was John Howson from NY, I was wondering if those Howsons may have had a Sarah in their descendancy who may have been born abt. 1855 in England? If they did, do you have information on descendancy, etc.? Also does your information indicate that the family may have immigrated to US. If so, where? In a death certificate for my grandfather, his mother is listed as Sarah (what appears to be HOWSON - the 3rd letter is a bit difficult to read) & father as Charles CLINE. In checking backward, I located an 1880 census with Charles & Sarah (both aged 25, which would place her birth year at about 1855)that indicated she was born in England. In an 1885 census, there were more children (2 of which are related to me, but my grandfather was born 2 years later, so he's not on it). Again, it indicates Sarah was born in England. Charles was born in NY. Am having trouble going back beyond 1880 to locate her. Thanks! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It is obvious to me that the diretory is listing only heads of households. I know from other sources that at 173 East State Street, Eva (SEELEY) BOSTWICK was living with her two daughters. At 175 East State Street, Lulu BOSTWICK was living with her daughter Anna (BOSTWICK)SALTSMAN and Anna's son Robert D. SALTSMAN (my father). Since Lulu's husband Lavern was on the 1930 Census, this helps me pin down the year that he died to 1930-1937. Detailed nformation on these individuals is on my family tree on RootsWeb. >From several trips to Johnstown in my childhood, I remember both my grandmother Anna B. SALTSMAN, and her sister-in-law Eva next door. Eva was referred to as "Aunt Eva" because she was my father's aunt. Both Anna and Eva were old ladies with pure white hair who loved to garden. They both had very large gardens in the land behind their back yard and garage. This land was often a swamp back in those days (1960s). The Rundell library has microfiches of birth, death, and marriages that provide the name, date, location and certificate number. Once you have that information, you have enough information to request a copy of the actual certificate from the local jurisdiction or Albany. There is an index to narrow the searches to the proper fiche by year and then by name. To access the fiches, you have to provide your license and sign in and out each fiche. The librarian will then provide you the fiche. The information goes up to 1956....soon 1957 if they have them, due to NYS law which stipulates public release of vital statistics. The last time I was there, they were located in the periodical/newspaper area in the older library building. Parking is available across the street adjacent to the newer library complex. My experience with the librarians both in the periodical section and the history section has always been pleasant. They are very helpful. T

    2. I suggest using the microfiche in Albany for years starting about 1884. Prior to that church records. Even in 1884 when it started it was not enforced until some years later. Pat H

    2. I think if I was looking for births deaths etc I would go to the vital records in Albany which started about 1884. Johnstown does have books and books which I have used until a couple years ago. The new clerk will not you touch them. The prior one did, she let me sit there by the hour and go over them. You will not get access to marriages or divorces though. Pat H

    1. [NYFULTON] Ripton Bros. Grocery Store
    2. Joanne Gaudio
    3. I'm wondering if anyone has any information about the Ripton Bros. grocery that was located in Johnstown in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Several of my great-grandfather Benjamin Henry Ripton's brothers founded the store - in a biography of former Johnstown mayor Percy Ripton in a NYS history, Mayor Ripton attributed the actual start to his uncle William A. Ripton, Benjamin Henry's youngest brother. Other brothers who may have been involved would have been James Hunter Ripton, John Clarence Ripton, and Walter N. Ripton. I don't know the actual start-date, and I'm not sure when it would have closed. William A. Ripton was in North Adams, MA, in 1900 running a store there with his then brother-in-law Richard Ansell, and later he moved to Amsterdam, NY, Kingston, NY, and finally Florida, and I don't know how long the rest of the family might have kept the store going. I've found ads in the "Broadalbin Herald" from 1908. At that time the store was located at 40 West Main St. in Johnstown. I'm writing a family history of my Ripton family and would appreciate anything anyone could tell me about this family business. Thank you. Joanne Gaudio

The house number is blank. They live on a farm on the State St extension, which is RD 3. They aren't listed in the 1936 directory, but Leon Jr. is listed on the Montgomery County rootsweb site. He was living in Mayfield when he entered the service: LEON COOK - was born Sept. 15, 1923. He was inducted into the service on Aug. 18, 1941 and trained at Newport, Rhode Island, Brooklyn and Camp LeJune, No. Carolina, Leon received the American Theatre medal, American Defense medal, Victory medal, Asiatic Pacific medal with two Stars and the Purple Heart.
