    1. [NYFULTON] Migration from Fulton Co. to Iowa
    2. Joanne Gaudio
    3. I'm trying to piece together the story of my great-grandfather's sister, who moved with her husband's family to Iowa shortly after 1880. If anyone has any knowledge of HOW people would have accomplished such a move at this time, or is familiar with any of the names and can add info, I'd sure appreciate having it for a family history I'm working on. Lydia Ripton, d/o Henry & Anna Ripton of Johnstown, married George A. Glenn, s/o Jacob & Hannah Glenn of Saratoga Co., about 1867 in Johnstown. In 1870 and 1880 they lived in Johnstown. In 1880 George's sister Fannie Glenn Hartley, w/o Alexander Hartley (who was the s/o Isaac and Sarah Hartley of Perth), had already moved to Ida Co. IA, and by 1885 Jacob and Hannah Glenn also lived in Ida Co. Lydia and George Glenn pushed on to western Nebraska, where a child was born in 1888, but several of their children eventually moved back to Iowa. George died in 1906 and Lydia died in 1913, both in Dawes Co., NE. As far as I know, the Ripton's lost track of Lydia and her family - certainly I never heard of relatives of my grandmother's living in Nebraska or Iowa (and when I and my young family moved from NY to Iowa in 1972, the family acted like we were going to the back side of the moon!). So how would such a family have traveled west in 1880? Train? Was it too late for wagons? I find it hard to visualize such a big move in that era, but I don't know much about transportation at the time. And is anyone working with the Hartleys of Perth or the Glenns from Saratoga? If so, I'd love to share info. Thanks for any help. Joanne Gaudio

    3. People could have traveled by rail to Iowa as early as 1854 when the Chicago & Rock Island railroad reached the Mississippi River; however, the first railroad to cross Iowa was the Chicago & Northwestern which reached Omaha in 1869. By 1880, several railroads had been built in Iowa. There were stage coaches that ran regular routes by then as well. Most local travel was by horse - either horse back or in horse-drawn wagons or carts. Hope this helps. ----- Original Message ---- From: Joanne Gaudio <jgaudio@charter.net> To: nyfulton@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, March 16, 2007 7:23:35 AM Subject: [NYFULTON] Migration from Fulton Co. to Iowa I'm trying to piece together the story of my great-grandfather's sister, who moved with her husband's family to Iowa shortly after 1880. 1. [NYFULTON] More Histories for New York online.
    2. Ray Brown
    3. More town histories for New York have been added to my web site as follows: Oneida County The towns of Bridgewater, Lee, Paris, Sangerfield, Vernon and Whitestown. Herkimer County The towns of Columbia, Danube, Fairfield, Herkimer, Ohio, Warren, Wilmurt and Winfield. Fulton County The town of Mayfield was added. As with the other towns in Fulton County this history is quite long and mentions many of the residents. With adding towns for Herkimer County this makes 36 Counties that I have local histories online for. Some completed and some that are still being worked on. All New York history files at my web site may be found from this link: http://history.rays-place.com/ny/index.htm Cheers Ray Brown http://www.rays-place.com

    3. Hi P. LaLond, I would think that the Peleg Sanford you mentioned might be related to the Peleg Sanford who lived in Rhode Island during the 1600s. I am related to him. I have found information about the family on the WorldConmnect website at http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi. This Peleg was Gov. of Rhode Island at one time. Richard

The Amsterdam rug manufacturer died at the Gideon Putnam Hotel last night after being confined since the final week of racing, etc Attending physicians said he had been suffering from heart disease for some time, his condition becoming so bad at the end of the August racing season they were unable to move him to his home. Long one of racing's most devoted enthusiasts, the veteran horseman suffered a serious blow several months ago when the stables at his Amsterdam farm burned, and with them many of his most highly prized horses. That loss hastened his decision to quit the turf. During the Saratoga meeting, his entire stable went under the hammer save for Golden Meadow, a 12-year-old jumper. Golden Meadow, a winner at Saratoga this year, still holds the "about two miles" steeplechase record over the Spa oval. Born in Amsterdam Jan. 18..1851, the son of the late Stephen Sanford, founder of tho Sanford Carpet Mills, John'Sanford was graduated from Yale in 1872 and became associated with his father. Elected to Congress in 1888. he served on the House foreign affairs committee and took an active part in framing tho McKinlcy tariff bill. He served two terms In the House, refusing the Republican nomination for a third. Inheriting his love of the thoroughbred race horse from his father, Sanford acquired the Hurricana stud at the former's death. He spent largo sums for blooded stock and built the breeding establishment into a power on the American turf. He is survived by Stephen (Laddie) Sanford, In whom the love of the thoroughbred foresook the racetrack for the polo field. etc Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Sanford took up horse breeding, creating what was first called Hurricana Farm. With names like Chuctanunda and Molly Brant, Sanford's horses raced to glory at the Kentucky Derby and Saratoga. In the early 1900's, there was a special celebration on Independence Day weekend prior to the opening at Saratoga. Workers from Sanford's carpet mill were given a half-day holiday and brought their families to Hurricana to watch the thoroughbreds compete. After Stephen Sanford's death in 1913, his son John oversaw operations at the farm, renamed Sanford Stud Farms in the 1930s. www.bobcudmore.com/sequel2.htm Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
