Don't give up on the cemeteries. It is unlikely that many people were buried in unmarked graves! Northern New York has many small cemeteries on side roads, some still grave and others now in fields or woodlots when the course of the roads changed. The U.S. Government makes finely detailed maps that can assist you if you can narrow your search a bit. It's been years since I have used any of the maps, but I know they can be quite expensive and you may want to hunt up an archive that has them available for viewing. Mac
