Thanks to all who answered so promptly. Now I will tell you what I have on my family so far. Selena Olive (maybe FRENCH?) born in 1853 in Saranac Lake, New York. Her parents were also born in New York State. Selena married John C. McLAUGHLIN in 1874, probably in New York State. Their son, James Henry McLAUGHLIN was born Feb. 22, 1882, maybe at the Lincoln Nursing Home. Not much, is there? I don't know if the records go back that far in New York State, so would appreciate if you point me in any direction that I haven't thought of yet. I can't look on the 1860 census unless I know her parents' names. They might be in the 1880 census, after her marriage, but I'm not sure of the city. My father said that she taught school before her marriage. (Couldn't be after marriage, because married women were not allowed to work - right?) Could she have had some college or was that even required to teach elementary grades. She married at 21, so she wouldn't have had too much time for both college and working. However, even in my own lifetime, I remember that one could teach in a rural school with only two years of college, back in the 40s. Thanks for any help. Mildred in Lake Geneva, WI
