Stueben County is on the Southwestern tier with Pennsylvania as its southern border. Since Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh) was established long before the revolution, the trail west through their was well used. Access to three major rivers didn't hurt this process. The area in Northern New York was not conducive to westward migration, however. Mac
