    1. Franklin Co research locations
    2. Mary Jane Poole
    3. Dear SL, If you write a letter to the probate court, first ask if they have any on your ancestor and then you will get a list. From that list you choose what you want, because it can be expensive when copies are made of everything in a probate packet. Sorry I don't know the library hours in Malone. You can go to the LDS site and find out if they have a center in Malone along with a lot of other great things. Good Hunting, Mary Jane Poole I am looking for advice on locations in Franklin Co for genealogy research. I am specifically interested in the BERO and GREW, GROW surnames in the town of Bombay. I have the addresses for the Franklin Co Courthouse and the Franklin Co Historical Society in Malone, NY. Would the courthouse probate files be open for research Mon-Fri ? I imagine there is also a public library. Does anyone know when it would be open ? Does it have any evening hours ? Is there a special collection of local history information ? Is there a Morman Family History Center in Malone ? I hope to be visiting Malone next month on a research trip probably on a Monday and Tuesday. Thanks for your advic

    3. Here's frustrating news for you....yes, I've seen the county written with a y from the late 1700's and early 1800's...BUT....The area we're considering was also one part of VT ...hmmm...or was it the VT nw that was part of NY? I don't have the book handy. There IS a Franklin, VT, in the nw corner, just below the Canadian border and a stone's throw from NY. I live in central NY, and if you'd like to e me with the names of the next generation down, I'll be happy to check the census indexes for you and see if I can find a link. 1. Re: LaPoint ancestors
    2. Hi I am a newbie to the list. I have just been given some information and checked it out at the LDS website, that a person with the same name as my g g grandmother, Mathilde LaPoint was born at approximately the same time as she, was born in Franklyn, NY in 1833. I hunted in NY state for a town by that name, but as far as I can tell, there isn't one, and I am wondering about the possibility it may have been Franklin County. Maybe it was spelled that way back then. Does anyone know? I have other information that she was born in Canada, and have been working toward that end, so I am just checking out what may be a totally empty lead here. On the other hand it may lead to a breakthrough. It is possible. I have a feeling, researching my family, that several branches of my family hopped across the St. Lawrence river at various points whenever the mood struck them. It has been extremely frustrating trying to locate them. Anyway, I am hoping someone can help. Thanks.

    1. John Spaulding , abt 1816-?, Bangor, NY
    2. Kevin Spaulding
    3. I am looking for information about the the family of my 2G grandfather Samuel Charles Santimore/Spaulding. The information that we have indicates that his birth name was Santimore, and that he was "adopted" by a Spaulding family and took their name. It is believed he grew up in the Franklin Co., NY area. (We have reason to believe that Samuel's birth parents may have been French-Canadian.) In the 1860 Federal Census of Franklin Co., New York a Samuel Santance was living with a John Spaulding in Bangor, NY. Since no one with the name Santimore was found with a Spaulding family in the Franklin Co. area, it would seem that this Samuel "must be ours." He was listed immediately following John Spaulding, age 44 and his wife Harriet age 35, both born in VT. Samuel Santance, age 13, b. abt 1847 Phidelia Spaulding, age 13, b. NY William H. Spaulding, age 4, b. Illinois Samuel may have been considered a son since he was listed in that order. In the 1850 census there was no Samuel Santance/Santimore living with John Spaulding in Bangor, NY. It shows John Spaulding, age 34, born VT; his wife Harriet E., age 26, b. VT and living with them were: Cyrus Gibbs age 58, b. MA Celia Gibbs, age 59, b. NH Mary Gibbs, age 28, b. VT In the 1870 cencus, Samuel is not listed with the Spaulding family in Bangor, NY. Listed at this time were: William, age 14 Hanibal, age 10 Silas Gibbs, age 78 (presumably the same as Cyrus in 1850) Samuel is known to have a brother Charles Santimore from Bangor, NY who made a deposition in 1891 in regard to Samuel's Civil War pension claim. I am interested in learning more about Samuel's adopted family, as well as his birth family. If anyone has information that might tie into any Santimores in that area, or into John and Harriet Spaulding of Bangor, NY, I would love to hear from you! Regards, Kevin Spaulding spaulding@kodak.com

    1. Samuel, Charles and Dustin SANTIMORE from Franklin Co., NY
    2. Kevin Spaulding
    3. I am looing for information about my 2G grandfather Samuel Charles SANTIMORE/SPAULDING (c1844-1937). The information that we have indicates that his birth name was Santimore, and that he was "adopted" by a Spaulding family and took their name. It is believed he grew up in the Franklin Co., NY area, possibly with the family of John and Harriet Spaulding. (We have reason to believe that Samuel's birth parents may have been French-Canadian.) >From Samuel's Civil War Pension files, we learn that he had a brother Charles Santimore. According to a deposition by Charles found in the pension files dated 1891, he met up his brother Samuel at Manchester, VA in the summer of 1865. They were both discharged in the fall of 1865. After his discharge, Samuel lived with Charles at his home in Brandon, St. Lawrence County, New York for 3 years. Samuel later moved to VT, and he died there at Stowe 2 Feb 1937. Charles Santimo is listed in the census for Bangor, NY in 1870 (age 30, b. Canada, East.) with his wife Rossilla (age 28, b. Canada, East.) living in the Reuben Jones household. The 1880 cencus, Bangor, NY shows Charles (age 39) and Rose (37) and son George (age 9) all born in NY. It has been suggested that Samuel and Charles may be sons of Dustin Santimore from Bangor, Franklin Co., NY (b. 1817, Canada) who enlisted in the Civil War as a private in Co. G of the 98th NY Regiment. He was discharged for disability in Oct 1862 at Craney Island, VA. He is listed in the 1860 census for Bangor, NY with an age of 54. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who might have information that would tie into either Samuel, Charles or Dustin! Regards, Kevin Spaulding spaulding@kodak.com

    1. Franklin Co. Census
    2. Does anyone know if there are NY Franklin County Census records for 1855 or 1865? I am researching John and Joset VIVLEMORE (church records show Viv L'amour) who resided in Fort Covington in 1860 with their seven children, the oldest listed being 22 at the time. Later records for the children as well as the 1860 census show that all of the children were born in NYS, but I cannot find any evidence of them prior to the 1860 census, even though they should show up from at least 1838 based on the children's births. The New York State library does not have any of the early state census records for Franklin County, and they are not in the Federal Census for 1840 or 1850. I looked in the index as well as line by line for Fort Covington. I have looked through the microfilmed church records for St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fort Covington, and found a lot of later info pertaining to some of the children in their married lives, but unfortunately the film did not cover earlier time periods. (I also looked at the other Catholic chuch that they might have attended and found no evidence of any Vivlemores, so I believe that St. Mary's was their church.) I am going to look for whatever cemetery they may have been buried in to try to get more info. Has anyone else had the problem of tracking ancestors through the census records in Franklin? Are there any city directories or other materials that would provide clues about these ancestors? Was the Canadian border pretty firm by then, or could they have been omitted if they lived on the North end of town? That probably sounds absurd, but at this point I'm really grasping for straws here... I appreciate any clues, leads or possibilities that are offered. Consider this a bonus for those of you who have read through what I have written so far... I hope I won't be overwhelmed with responses by offering this, but I will be going back next week to the FHC to go through the microfilm with the two Catholic Churches on it again, so if anyone is pretty sure their ancestors were in the Ft. Covington area and were Catholic, send me an email with what you would like me to look for and I'll do my best. The St. Mary's records were pretty much from the 1880's on, but the other church (I think it could have been St. Bridget's but I didn't write it down) had much earlier records, from the 1840's on.) The St. Mary's record's have some indices, but the other church is just by date, so try to include as much detail as possible. Thank you very much~! Laura Bonacorsi Yardville, NJ Ps. Also looking for the family of Phoebe Marshall, bn NY abt. 1845, married Joseph Viv L'amour, was in Ft. Covington in 1865 for birth of son William. Phoebe's parents were from P. Quebec> (is that province of Quebec???) as were John and Joset Viv L'amour, parents of Joseph.

    1. NICHOLS-KELLEY
    2. Hi, I am attempting to find more information regarding the families of George and Sirena (Colvin) NICHOLS and their son Aubra Nichols who married Amanda Kelley. George and Sirena moved to NYS from Danby Vermont, possibly first to the Bangor NY area. They were located in Lewis County in 1850, have not been able to trace them from there. Aubra and Amanda Kelley were married about 1858, and their first child Martha A. was born in Franklin Co., NY about 1859. A second child George H. (?Henry) was born in Franklin Co., NY about 1861. After this the family removed to St Lawrence Co., NY and then to Jefferson County, NY, where they remained. Both Aubra and Amanda are buried in Adams, Jefferson Co., NY. The parents of Amanda Kelley were unknown Kelley and Emily unknown. I would love to know if there were any Kelly families in the area in that time frame. Also would be interested in any information concerning these families. Thanks in advance for your help. Irene
