Alex, Yes, Hogansburg and Massena are located near each other but in different counties. Hogansburg in Franklin County while Massena is in St. Lawrence County. Darlene
I just thought I would add that the St. Regis Indian Reserve extended into Huntingdon County, Quebec. In the 1842 Canadian census for the area, I found it curious to find part of the US portion of St. Regis included in the county census. The census taker must have been an eager person. Anyone interested in the 1842 census will find a few names from the US portion of as part of Dundee Township. It is online at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~qchuntin/Default.htm Ken Steffenson

Greetings from Tennessee! I am researching Herbert George Smith born Oct 5 1879 in Chateaugay, Franklin County, New York. This info came from an LDS file. It list his parents as Alex SMITH and Maria Elizabeth MARTIN. This was my grandfather. Somewhere in time he moved to Rochester, Monroe Co., New York. He married Lillian (Myrtle?) Van Buren . I am not sure of exact spelling of her last name, I have seen it so many different ways I am not sure who to spell it now. On his death cert it list his wife's name as Myrtle? This family had 12 children in Rochester, one being my mother. She was born in 1922. The family was taken away and placed in foster care when my mother was 6 months old. All of the children seemed to be scattered all over the city. Somewhere down the line Herbert and Lillian moved to Ohio (Cinn area, I think) and supposed to of had more children???? Herbert was killed in a car accident in Erie, Pa in the 30's. I am not sure of Lillian. Is there any one else out there searching for this family. Also would any of you know if or how I can obtain the welfare records of the children taken away. This has been a big puzzle in my family for many years. Any help is so greatly appreciated. THANKS! Tena, TN
If I remember correctly, the Reservation was called the St. Regis Indian Reservation and was near Hogansburg. We always referred to it as Hogansburg. Yes, it is in Franklin County and Massena is in St. Lawrence County. Mac
Alex, I believe that Massena is in St Lawrence Co and Hogansburg is in Franklin Co. For St Lawrence Co info go to this site http://www.rootsweb.com/~nystlawr/stlawlds.htm You will see all the LDS film numbers for each town in St Lawrence Co - not just census but church and cemeteries also. It will tell you that the 1900 census is on 3 films 1241156,157, and 158. You would need to know the ED # for your Massena family to know exactly which film to order. I do know that the 1900 Franklin Co census film is on 2 LDS films - 1,241,035 and 036 but I do not know which of those films has Hogansburg. Hope this helps a little. Hi, Thanks very much to all who responded to my request for Massena and Hogansburg. I had 5 replies in less than 2 hours!! All said the 1890 census was burned in a fire, which I obviously did not know. Most directed me to the LDS site. Unfortunately, the town names come up, but no reference to census numbers:-( Thanks for your help. I shall have try some other method to locate these numbers. Hi, Just subscribed to the list and need some information, please. I am looking for the census film numbers for 1900 and 1890 for Massena and Hogansburg, New York. I know they are very near each other, but understand Hogansburg is a native community and not sure if the both would be on the same film. I have been unable to locate appropriate film numbers on the internet so am asking of anyone on the list can supply me the numbers of the films I need. Thanks in advance Alex Maxwell Chetwynd, BC Canada

They arrived in Franklin Co after 1850, appear in 1860 census, and moved on sometime after 1860) >> Thank you for the above information. I - for one - have been monitoring (lurking, I guess is the correct phrase), and the news (to me) that Franklin County had a 1855 census is wonderful. I am trying to find the surname TRUAX and McDermott (McDermand), who were there in the 1840 and 1850, but not 1860 Census. (In 1860, they were in Michigan). Anyway, the 1855 census would be most welcome by me, and I will order it at the FHC next week. Thanks again. Bob White

I tried getting a copy of "1855 New York State census, Franklin County, New York, Index" by Carol W. Brown through inter-library loan but it is "non-circulating." Does anyone have access to this or know where I could purchase a copy? Carl Kalota Cincinnati, Ohio
Looking for information on Daniel Lee Aiken, reportedly born in Franklin Co. in 1825. He lived for a time in Tompkins County, and moved to Warrensburg, MO where he died in 1892. We have not been able to discover who his parents were, or anything else about his history. Dorrice Wallis
I believe the LDS Family History Centers can get the 1855 census for you, but I don't think there's much to it. As I recall, it's on the same microfilm as the NY 1875 census. Good luck. Mary
Hello: I am still searching for the surnames TRUAX and McDERMOTT (McDERMAND, McDERMID). The 1850 Census lists only a Mary TRUAX - working at an Inn in Bombay, ranklin County. She is 20 and lists her place of birth as "C.W" Does this stand for Canada West?? If so, how can one find the Canadian Census for 1850?? The 1850 Census also lists Francis McDermid (page 228), and a Francis McDermad (page 240), with essentially the same names and ages of family (wife, sons and daughters). I am sure that this is the Francis McDermott that I am seeking from later Census data. At this census, Francis lists his place of birth as Ireland, and his wife (Nancy) as "C.E.". If indeed this is Canada East, - where does East Canada and West Canada begin/end?? The 1860 Census for Francis McDermont (as it is then spelled), lists his place of birth as "L. Canada". Where is the region known as "Lower Canada"? Also, living nearby (in the 1850 Census for Westville, Franklin County) to Francis McDermad (page 228) is a Joseph MOAX (a potential mispelling for TRUAX) -- Moax is how it looks to me in the wiritng of the names in the Census. The 1840 Census has a Francis McDermott living in Westville and a Jacob Truax living in Moira. Any knowledge on further research in Canada, or these surnames would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone requested/received probate or land information regarding farms in Franklin County? Thank you Bob White Chula Vista CA

Hello: The 1850 Census Index has the following McDermads/mcDermonts/McDermonts for Franklin County in 1850: Francis McDermad in Westville, NY Margaret McDermon in Malone, NY Andrew McDermont in Malone, NY Francis McDermont in Malone, NY Rosannah McDermont in Malone, NY I am related to the Francis McDermad in Westville. He has listed his place of birth -- depending on the Census as either Lower Canada or Ireland -- and I tend to think that he might haave emigrated from Ireland to Canada. Does anyone have more information on this family ?? Francis moved to Midland County MI by 1859 He had a son named Clemence, and I noted another Clemence living in Franklin County, NY in the 1860 Census. Thank you Bob White
