    1. [NYFRANKL] RE: Bessie BLISS
    2. Hi: I am new to this list and am interested in finding any information regarding a Bessie Bliss, daughter of Hiram and Nellie Sevey Bliss, who was living in Malone, Franklin Co., NY at the time of her mother's death on 22 January 1926. She was not listed as a survivor at the time of her sister's death (Fannie Bliss Johnson, Russell, NY) in June 1956. Am wondering if she was still in Malone prior to this time and her death occurring prior to 1956? Any information that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. 1. Vaughn/Vaughan/Mann
    2. Virginia Phelps
    3. Hello Jim, Here's a thought for a place to look for your missing ancestors. My g'g'grandfather, George A. Phelps, was born around 1820 in Caldwell's Manor, Mississquoi County, Quebec. His father, however, was from northern Vermont and they later ended up in Franklin County. Caldwell's manor was a large tract of land that was carved up into small farms - possibly tennants? - just over the border from northern NY and VT. I've not yet determined the history of Caldwell's manor but it seems it may have been a lure; perhaps a false promise of farm-to-own? (If anyone out there knows the history and facts, I'd love to know what it is!) At any rate, I have a handwritten transcription of the 1825 Census of Lower Canada for this area and see several Vaughn families there. I didn't notice any Manns but it's a bit difficult to accurately scan pages of handwritten notes rather than an electronic index so I may have missed someone. While I don't find a Marlin or Martin Vaughn, I do find several other Vaughns in that area. Do any of the given names below show up among Marlin Vaughn's children (in other words, children named for their grandfather)? If so, check across the border. Here are the Vaughn's I spotted: In St. Armand Twp: Clark and Jabez Vaughn In St. Thomas Twp: John Vaughn In St. George Twp: Josephus Vaughn In Stanbridge Twp: Ozen and Clark Vaughn Good luck! 1. TRIM(M)
    2. Hi, List!! I have been unsuccessfully seeking info on the surname TRIM(M). George TRIM (born 1840) married Charlotte (born 1834), and they were living in Bangor, from the 1860 census. Also from that census, the had Fredrick (b.1860), James (born 1854), and Jasper (born 1856). After that census, they had Samuel (my gr grandfather, born 1869), Jackson (born 1863), George, Jr. (born 1866), and Polly (born 1873). They are listed as George and "Shollet" in the book, "History of Brandon": >From the book, "History of Brandon", George and his wife "Shollett" are mentioned. George and "Shollet"(Charlotte) are also listed in the 1892 census of Brandon as age 57 for George, and 58 for "Shollet". At that time they had an Anna, age 6, and a Bertha, age 8, living with them. There is speculation as to whether they were their children, or their grandchildren. I can't find any other info on this elusive bunch!! I would love to find the parents of George, Charlotte's maiden name, and any info on their children! Anybody got them in their trees or records? Hugs.............Linda in Lucas, OH

    1. Vaughn/Vaughan/Mann
    2. Hello, I am new to the list. I am looking for any information on my great grandfather and grandmother. Marlin Vaughn was born in 1802 and Amarylla Mann was born in 1804.They would have been married around 1823, where unknown. I first found them in Ostwegat Twp., St. Lawrence County, New York in the 1830 census. I later found them in Ellisburg Twp., Jefferson County, New York in the 1840 census. My grandfather bought land in Allen County, Ft. Wayne, Indiana from Robert and Mary Ellis of Jefferson County, New York. They moved to the Ft. Wayne, Indiana area around 1843. The family has been there ever since. Many times the ( L ) in Marlin has been crossed to make it Martin. Also Amarylla's name has been spelled many different ways. The last name has been spelled Vaughn and Vaughan. I have been looking for them for the past 22 years, but can't find anything previous to the New York 1830 census. They had eight children. If anybody can please help me or give me any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jim Vaughn (JVAUGHN755@AOL.COM )

    3. Hello Carl, Could you tell us about the book "Clear Pond" - what it's about and where did you order it from? I have a recommendation for a book that I purchased a one year ago from the Saranac Lake Free Library 100 Main St, Saranac Lake, NY 12983. It's called "Life on the Border" by William Reed. It was originally written 1882 by Reed as an account of his boyhood in northwest Franklin County (Bombay mostly) from 1823-1837. The library reprinted the book in 1994. His parents died in MA before he was 5 and he was sent to live with his "aunt and uncle". "For fourteen years Reed lived with the couple in a cabin one mile west of a north-south road from Fort Covington to Moira." This 162 page book is filled with his life stories of the area. It has been such a help to me (a born and bred big city girl) in understanding the difficulties of settling an area where I have never been. The book cost $19.95 including postage. Anyone who is interested should probably contact the library to see if it is still available. Judy Mott Strong Orange, CA http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mottgene/

    2. Carl Johnson
    3. I am researching the Johnson family of Coreys in what was the Town of Brandon (I'm told it's now Altamont), south of Upper Saranac Lake. I'm looking for any information on William and Martha Johnson, their children Charles H. and George W., and Charles's children Lee, Eugene, Jessie and Guy. Guy Johnson was my grandfather. Helpful folks have pointed me to the book Clear Pond, which I've got on order, but I thought I'd see if anyone else on the list is interested in this family. 3. I'll apologize for not having the film numbers handy. I believe the Hogansburg you are looking for is probably included in a section of the census for Franklin County titled St. Regis Reservation, and I believe it is (if my notes are any indication) at the beginning of the first reel for Franklin County. I'd suggest you contact the New York State Library, where it is available in the genealogy section, and they can probably get you the numbers. -- Carl Johnson cjohnson@nycap.rr.com http://home.nycap.rr.com/cjohnson Researching Peck, Johnson, Cath, Goodrich, Crisalle in Franklin, Essex, and Schenectady Counties, NY > Pam & Alex Maxwell wrote: > >> Hi, >> >> Thanks very much to all who responded to my request for Massena and >> Hogansburg.
