>From the surge in activity. it appears that this forum has received some publicity! While everyone is paying attention, I'd like to throw my ancestors into the fray.... Ebenezer Webb (1757-1846) Moved to Malone from Windham, Conecticutt. Married Abigail Rood. Died in Malone. Their son... Oliver Webb (1782-1849) Married Sally Nichols (b. Sudbury, VT). Lived entire life in Malone. Their son... Nicholas Webb (1816-1904) Married Fanny Clark. Lived in Malone and North Bangor. Three children: Henry Robin, Edgar Clark and Fanny. Nicholas' wife died at age 24. Later, in bad health, Nicholas moved to Crossville, TN to live with his son Henry, who had moved to Tennessee in 1884. When he died in 1904, Nicholas was returned to Malone for burial. My great grandfather Henry Webb married Rhoda Acenath Smith, also from North Bangor. Henry and Rhoda are buried in Crossville, Tennessee, my home town. Henry was a photgrapher and, among his old glass negatives, is a photo of the Eldred Hotel (in Malone, I believe). When he moved to Tennessee, he opened a small inn called "Spring Lawn". I'm curious if he may have begun his innkeeping career at the Eldred before moving south. Lots of questions... Did Ebenezer or Oliver have any more children? Does anyone have any information about these Webbs or their wives' families? Looking for ancestors, cousins and information.... Son of Henri Chene and Rose (Rosalie Paradis). Desire was killed in some type of accident at work, believed to have been a lumberjack? He lived with his wife, Mary Ellen in St. Regis Falls/Tupper Lake Franklin Co NY. His sister, Rose married Mary Ellens brother John. Anna is from Ireland. Had a sister ? Ferhan which lived with her after Samuels death. Sam and Anna apparently ran a hotel in Malone, NY at one time. (Again during the 1800's) Their daughter Catherine married James T Palmer. Catherine died at a young age. They had three children: Anna Elizabeth b. 1890, Sarah which married a McPherson, and Charles of whom is believed to have ended up in or around Chicago, Illinois. The three children were raised by Samuel and Anna. Tom Ephraim Smith son of Caleb Smith, was born at Athol, Mass., Nov. 30, 1776. His father was of English extraction, and settled at Athol, Mass., before the Revolutionary war. Caleb had a family of eleven children, nine sons and two daughters, all of whom lived to an extreme old age, several of them reaching ninety years and upwards. He was a farmer and brickmaker by occupation, and his chief delight was in hunting, which occupied very much of his time. He died at Athol, Mass. Ephraim was married to Lydia Mastern in 1804. She was born in Dutchess Co., N.Y., Nov. 12, 1779. They had seven children, viz.: Polly(deceased), Chaney, Sally(deceased), Emeline, Omri, Lyman(deceased), and James, all of whom were born on a farm in Champlain, N.Y., now owned by Chaney. Ephraim Smith settled in Champlain in the year 1800; remained a year, went back to Athol, spent one winter, and returned the following spring. He was a mason and a farmer by occupation; in politics a Whig. His wife was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He died May 1, 1865, and Mrs. Smith died in September 1874. Chaney Smith, son of Ephraim, was born Dec. 9, 1807. He married Hannah Chapman for his first wife, by whom three children were borne viz.: Matilda(deceased), Augusta, and Alfred. He married for his second wife Samira Hayford, of Champlain, by whom four children were borne viz.: Nettie, FranklinP., John, and Ella. Mr. Smith is one of the influtial farmers of Champlain, a man of strict integrity and respected by all. In politics a Democrat. He has held various official positions. Omri Smith was born June 15, 1814; married Lovica A. Leonard, daughter of Caleb Leonard, of Champlain, Jan. 29, 1840. She was born July 14, 1818. They have reared one daughter, Isabella, who married Elisha Little, a merchant of Chazy. Mr. Smith is a farmer. He settled where he now resides in 1845. No more honorable men can be found in the town or county than these two brothers, Chaney and Omri. Omri Smith is a Republican in politics. The page next to this one has the biography of Caleb Leonard The book I found it in is called "History of Franklin and Clinton Counties, of New York. By B. D. Hurd" I hope this helps you Susan
The only name I could find was a Biographical Sketch of Joseph W. Tuttle Joseph Willard Tuttle The subject of this sketch traces his lineage in this country to Samuel Tuttle, who was born in the year 1708, and died at Littleton, Mass., Dec. 11, 1780. His Grandfather, Samuel Tuttle, Jr., son of Samuel Tuttle, was born at Littleton, Mass., June 16, 1732. He was educated at Harvard University, and graduated in the same class with his brother Sampson, class of 1757. He was twice married. His first wife was Mary Russell, of Littleton, by whom he nine children. She died March 27, 1772, age thirty-two years. His second wife was Miss Rebecca Robbins, of Westford, by whom he had fourteen children. He died December 15th, 1814. There is a lot more on this Tuttle Family. Let me know if if it could be connected to you. The book I found it in is called "Histories of Franklin and Clinton Counties, of New York. By B. D. Hurd"
Danielle I found a Biographical sketch for JAMES ROGERS. James Rogers was born in Warren County, NY, on the 15th day of August, 1804. He received a fair common-school education, and came to Keeseville, and, associating himself with Thomas Rogers, opened a store in that place in 1830, under the name of James and Thomas Rogers. James Rogers soon displayed the great capacity for business that marked his whole future, and afterwards did so much to build up one of the largest and most prosperous enterprises in Northern New York. There is a little more about the business, and then it goes on to say that he died Jan. 9, 1880. Susan The book I found it in is called "Histories of Franklin and Clinton Counties, of New York. By B. I don't have birth dates or death dates for her.. she had to have been married about 1912 or 13 because she had her first son Raymond in 1914 >> FYI, Potters Field is a generic term that referred to the cemeteries where the indigent were buried. Years ago, most towns had a place called potters field. Since the Roman Catholic Church would not permit a person who committed suicide to be buried in hallowed ground, they were buried in the potters fields, but most of the people buried there were either poor and destitute or strangers to the area, the graves mostly bore wooden markers, that rapidly deteriorated. That, coupled with the lack of maintenance caused most of the "potters fields" to become overgrown and eventually lost to the world. Rodney L. McKinney Rmckin2383@aol.com
