to everyone who responded to my request for Tuberculosis Sanitariums in Saranac Lake. All of the information is very helpful. Thanks again.
Here is one in Liberty New York: The curative properties of the air in the Adirondack region, at Liberty, N. Y., in cases of incipient tuberculosis, and its value as a prolonger of life in advanced cases, had an enthusiastic champion in Dr. Loomis, and he was active among those who opposed the extinction of the forests of this natural sanitorium. In 1896 the sanitorium was opened as such and dedicated as a memorial to Dr. Loomis. His wife, Anne M. Loomis, is also honored, through Mr. and Mrs. James Speyer, by "The Anne M. Loomis Memorial `Lean-to'," so that now the Loomis sanitorium is well equipped for the care of tuberculous invalids. It is situated on the southern slope of a range of high hills, at an elevation of 2,300 feet above tide water, at the village of Liberty, Sullivan Co., N. Y., on the New York, Ontario and Western R. R.
Sally...(et al) You'd have to be more specific: which San? There were many, many sanitoria in SL and area over the years. Perhaps the best known was the Trudeau facility, which was the first tuberculosis sanitorium in North America. Edward Livingston Trudeau founded the Adirondack Cottage Sanitorium in 1884 on sixteen acres in the Adirondacks to care for patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and small means. For the next thirty years, the sanitorium continued through contributions from Trudeau himself and donations that he solicited. At his death of tuberculosis at Saranac on November 15, 1915, the sanitorium had an endowment of $600,000, accommodated 150 patients, and occupied thirty-six buildings on sixty acres...on the side of Mt. Pisgah. Of his four children, only one, Francis Berger Trudeau (1887-1956), a physician, survived him and carried on the work of his father, serving for many years as vice-president and secretary of the Trudeau Sanitorium. Francis Berger Trudeau's son, Francis Berger Trudeau, Jr. (1919-1995), was himself a physician and father of noted cartoonist Garry Trudeau. (I knew FB Sr slightly in my youth, and FB Jr and his family quite well through my teens and early 20s). One of the last active Sans, run by the State of NY at Ray Brook (a few miles from SL, and on the road to Lake Placid) was still open in the 1960s, although a meaningful cure for TB (medication) had already been found. Among the various Sans in SL, one was empty for years, then purchased by bobsledder Lex Thompson, and used as a pre-season camp dorm-and-dining facility for the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team, who trained in SL in the late 1940s. In the '50s, it was leased by the NY Giants of the NFL for the same purpose as previously served for the Eagles. There is a book which covers various Sans and other SL area med facilities, and is described at the website: http://hopefarm.com/update.htm _____U.S. SARANAC LAKE PIONEER HEALTH RESORT Mark Caldwell. A short history of Saranac Lake as a pioneer health resort, augmenting Cure Cottages with many historical photographs and a foreword by Dr. Francis Trudeau. 8 1/2 x 10½ - 40 pages- Photos - Map Paper -$11.95. There is more info on the Web, particularly on the Trudeaus. Regards, Brauck. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sally A. Is there someone who would know what year the Tuberculosis Sanitorium was built, and what township it was or is located in. Thankyou for any help you can give me.
Looking for any information on GEORGE ALOYSIUS VOORHIS, born around 1904.
Sorry if this is a repost, not sure if the first went through. My wife's great-grandmother (?) was Hortense GOYER b. 1850 Malone, Franklin Co., NY m. July 6, 1865 Malone, Franklin Co., NY to a Oliver BURRELL (BOUREL?). My mother-in-law says she remembers her going to a post office to pick up her native american pension check and she remembers seeing a picture of her with a very long pony tail so I assume she was an indian. Any help would be very helpful. Mike BALLENTINE http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ballentine/
To: Sue Schroeder, ABQ Constable, New York is a village located in Constable Township, Franklin County. It is situated at the junction of Route 30 & Route 122 close to midway between Malone, New York and the Canada/USA border. Calvin
An addition to my last query: I have some vague information from the death certificate of my great grandfather. William RIVET married a BOVA. Does that ring a bell with anyone? Trying to find a first name for the BOVA. Thanks. Sue Schroeder ABQ
I'm not sure if Constable is in Franklin County, but would anyone out there know of any of the following surnames in Constable or Malone: RIVETT, RIVETTE, RIVET, BOVA. I'm having a hard time finding them. Any info appreciated. Sue Schroeder ABQ
My apologies to those of you who went to the FRANKLIN County page on The POORHOUSE STORY and found some material there that was about Richland County. (How did I manage to do that? Go figure!) Anyway...it is now corrected; and I have added some additional information about your county's poorhouse history -- the report done in 1824 when the state was surveying how poor relief was provided in various counties. That report resulted in the passage of an 1824 law which set up a sytem of county poorhouses throughout the state. (There was already up on the page the results of an investigation into poorhouse conditions done in 1857 which described the current Franklin County Poorhouse.) I would like to invite you to visit The POORHOUSE STORY http://www.poorhousestory.com to see this and other material. If you recently visited the site, you will probably need to click REFRESH on your browser to see the new material. If you are new to the site, DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above)click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then click on NEW YORK POORHOUSES, then on FRANKLIN on the table of NY counties. There are other pages on the site which may help you gain some more insight into poorhouse history; they are all links on the left side of the homepage and include: HISTORY, LETTER TO GENEALOGIST, and FEATURED ARTICLES, among others. Hope you enjoy the site! Hello All, A quick question. I know the State of New York began keeping marriage records in 1881. If I were to request a marriage license from the year 1883 will I receive the actual license. My GGrandparents were married in Notre Dame Church in Malone in that year but church records don't give that valuable information like the actual license would. A second quick question. If available, would the license actually be held in the Town, or the Village of Malone? I've requested records from Malone before and ended up paying the $11.00 twice because I went to the wrong source. By the way, I'm researching the names Boucher (Bushey), Landreville (Londraville), and Jodoin, in Franklin as well as Clinton and Jefferson Counties. Thanks for the help. Hi, I made a mistake, I am the list administrator for the US Genexchange Franklin Co., NY mailing list. But I received the HAHAHA right after I posted my answer. It means someone on the list has the virus but who. Hi, I am the list administrator and run McAfee Activeshield constantly. I have received the HAHAHA once and deleted it without opening the attachment. I don't have your email or anyone else's on the list in my address book, which the virus uses to email itself. I have also scanned my computer 2 days ago with the updated McAfee virus program and no virus found. Maybe someone on the list has the virus.
