    3. The closest common surname I can find is Gatien. If you go to: http://www.familysearch.org/ and type in just the Surname and select the country (USA or Canada) you will see many entries for Gatien. but only a couple for Gadien and Gadian. 3. Dear List Members, I just ran across an interesting Website, "Courthouse Experiences" http://www.bcpl.net/~dmg/courthouse.htm Not every county is listed, but the ones listed gave helpful information regarding the attitudes of those working in the courthouses. I might suggest that if you have had a positive or negative courthouse experience you add them to this site. I now know how to prepare myself for several courthouses I want to visit later this year. 1. Re: [NYFRANKL] French-Canadians and migration
    2. My Denis McCarty Family from County Cork lived a while somewhere in Canada then moved toChateaugay, Franklin County, New York. A couple of years ago we visited there. We found reference to his Naturalization papers but couldn't find a copy of the real papers. I also have a Bradford family that came across from Canada into somewhere in Vermont. The only thing I know about them is that they had a 9 year old son named Charles Bradford. Is there anyone out there that can give me any ideas on how to continue this search. I have no idea where in Vermont and would love to be able to visit that area. Thanks so much, Cookie Puffysmum@aol.com

    1. [NYFRANKL] Fw: David Simeon PERCY/Julia Ann DERBY
    2. Michele Hassell
    3. I am looking for a marriage record for David Simeon PERCY and Julia Ann DERBY. Both were born in New York, in 1790 and 1804 respectively. They were residing in Chateaugay, Franklin Co. in 1830. Julia is believed to have died in Chateaugay in 1840 and the 1850 census shows David and the children living in Wisconsin where other members of the extended family had moved. This is not much to go on, but the name Percy seems to show up in Franklin Co., and Chateaugay in particular, so am wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone. Any clues or help pointing me in a plausible direction would be much appreciated. Michele Hassell hassell@mind.net Ashland OR

    2. I am sorry - I forgot that when I forward something it goes back to the list. I was trying to tell a friend of mine, Patti, that someone had listed a McFadden name. I think she has McFadden in her genealogy. Can you tell us how the list works because I don't think they all work the same. Stephanie M. O'Rourke - Looking for Mullen in the Malone area.

    2. Dear Kathleen; How very thoughtful of you to introduce yourself and tell us a little about yourself. It was also very prudent to set the ground rules from the git-go! This will eliminate a lot of "I didn't know"'s!! I am also the mother of 4 with 10 grandkids, and up until last October, was also working full-time! It sure keeps you feeling vibrant-when you are not exhausted! Glad to meet you! I am from the TRIM(M); GUYETT(E); EDWARDS; CHRISTIAN; ROBINSON; (Mc)FADDEN & FRENCH lines. Hugs......Linda

    1. [NYFRANKL] Proulx, Lefebvre, Lafave
    2. Sid & Lida Perfetto
    3. Hello, I am attempting to assemble a genealogy for my sister-in-law for a Christmas present. She is descended from Ephraim Proulx of Tupper Lake, and his wife, Clarena Lefebvre Proulx. Also we believe Ephraim's brother was Cyprien Proulx, also of Tupper Lake. Ephraim was born about 1879 in Quebec. He lost a leg in a logging accident and then worked in a grocery store. The family is buried in St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Tupper Lake. Anyone having information on this family that they would be willing to share, please contact me. Thank you for your attention. 1. [NYFRANKL] French-Canadians and migration
    2. Virginia Phelps
    3. First of all, Welcome to Kathleen Burnett, our new list mom! In response to the inquiry about French-Canadians in Franklin County who migrated to Michigan. I doubt that the move to MI was specific to French-Canadians but more likely a product of many people from Franklin County of various backgrounds moving together to a new land. My ancestors Silas PHELPS and his wife Lucretia EMRICK were married in northern Vermont but moved across the Canadian border to Caldwell's Manor. My guess is that this move was prompted by the promise of a good land deal which probably did not live up to expectations. My g'g'grandfather, George PHELPS, was born at Caldwell's Manor in 1819 but the family then moved back into upstate New York in 1825 and ended up in Franklin County [Chateaugay, Burke, Bellmont] by about 1830. By 1857 George Phelps and his family moved to northern Illinois. One of George Phelps' sisters moved to Shiawassee County, MI around 1870. The family of George Phelps' wife, Betsy MITCHELL, had emigrated from Scotland into Canada around 1828 and they too moved into Franklin County around 1840. Subsequently many from the Mitchell family migrated to the upper midwestern states as well. None of these families were truly French-Canadian although they had all lived in Quebec for a short period of time. By the early 1800s the eastern part of the country was becoming crowded and the ability to own good, farmable land was diminished. The moves to the midwest were a combination of this new land being opened up, made 'safe' and the very real need for farmers to find new land where a living could be made. Most families migrated together with extended family and/or neighbors. Some sent word back home touting the desireable aspects of the new land they found which inspired even more of their family and neighbors to move to the same areas. In essence, the moves were largely 'job related' since most people in those days were farmers and they needed good fertile soil and space. Virginia
