We did a little checking of the Census for the Mason Family. We could not identify the family in the LDS 1881 Canadian Census. We did not find the family in the 1901 census. The transcription of the 1901 census is not complete. We did find Ann living with Robert Mott and Sadie in 1920. She is 60 (b. 1860). The record shows she immigrated to the US in 1905. That is the only census we can identify her in. She was not identified in the 1930 census. Sadie (actually Sarah) is located in St Lawrence Co in both the 1920 and 1930. We believe also that Arthur is identifiable in 1910 and 1920 in St Lawrence Co. The one thing that is consistent in all 4 censuses is that Sadie and Arthur believed their dad was born in Canada. We believe that Peter Mason is an Americanization of his real name. The family name in Quebec may have been Masson or Mason may a description of his occupation (the infamous dit name). We recommend that you follow the 1901 census at http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/NationalSummary.jsp until the transcription is complete. We think you will find the family in it. You have the mind of a detective.....I never thought of Pierre although the possibility that Mason could have been Masson was something that I knew. Do you know anything about Caughnawaga (I thought I heard of a reserve in Quebec by that name). I will search some Chateguay records and see what I can find. Thanks for opening my eyes to new possibilities! Looking at the locations you have mentioned, I wonder if Chateguay is right. I lived in Chautauqua Co., NY for 6 years. While there I did research on my mother-in-law's family. I found some of them in the neighboring county to the east, Cattaraugus County, where there is a town called Conewango. There can be a lot of confusion with the spelling of these Indian names. Just a thought. Peggy Lyte Tyrrell At 08:30 AM 6/2/04 -0400, tammy fortier wrote: >Wow! Thanks for going to all of this trouble. Not much is known about >Peter Mason...just family rumour. It could be Peter's son, Arthur, because his brother, David, would have been 25 in 1910. It's interesting that both parents are listed as being born in Canada....maybe Peter was born in Chateguay, Quebec? How much older than Arthur was Anna...could it have been his mother? I don't know when Peter Mason left his family, but is it possible that Ann Mason was living with her son, Arthur? So may questions...lol. Thanks for your help. Just to throw something else in the mix. If you look at a map of the province of Quebec, there is a Chateauguay in Chateauguay County and there is Caughnawaga in the adjoining county of LaPrairie. Given this location, he might be a Pierre. There is a possibility you mght find him in church records for some parish in Chateauguay. I can't resist a genealogical puzzle either. Rita
There is a Peter Mason in 1910 in Malone, Franklin, NY. His birthyear would be closer to 1840. At 05:30 AM 6/2/2004, you wrote: >Wow! Thanks for going to all of this trouble. Could this be your Arthur? Wow! Thanks for going to all of this trouble. Not much is known about Peter Mason...just family rumour. That's where his birth in Chateguay, N.Y. stems from..I really have no proof of it. Peter married Anne McArthur from Martintown, Ontario, Canada around 1880. Anne Mason's obit states that she and Peter moved to Massena, N.Y. around 1906. Their children were Donald, Arthur, James, David and Sadie? Mason. Anne Mason died in 1938 at the home of her daughter Mrs. Robert Mott in Massena and is buried at Pine Grove Cemetary, Massena. On a small piece of paper, in handwriting, it says that Peter Mason was born in Chateguay, N.Y....also lived in Caughnawagna, N.Y. and Potsdam, N.Y......he sounds like a gypsy. He and his wife reportedly separated when the children were young. That's alot to digest, isn't it? Thanks for your help! We checked the Franklin Co. Census for Peter. There is none listed (Ancestry.com has an all name index). Could not identify him in the 1881 Canadian Census. We kinda like taking on a real challenge. Can you tell us more. Where did he live when he came back to the US? Who did he marry? Who were his children? Where and when did he die? We have access to a number of electronic services generally not available to others including a bunch of old newspapers. Anything you can give us may help. Hi! I have some LePages in my Murnane family who lived in Cheautaguy, NY. They moved to New Hartford, NY. Ethel LePage is still living, but her husband passed away a few years ago. The family plots are in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Chateaugay, NY. I know Ethel has a lot of pictures and memorial cards. I will be talking to her in the next few days, so if you see a connection, let me know and I'll see what I can find out. Joseph R. Murnane Williamson, NY

Pat, Thanks for the reply. If there is anything I can help you with please give me a try. I am basically a rookie at this so don't expect too much. John
Hi Pat, My wife's g-grandparents were Alphonse Lepage and Philomene Gamelin, Peter Page (Alphonse Pierre Lepage), son of Alphonse was her grandfather. I am trying to find info on Mary or Maria Brown who was Maria (Minnie) Fournier's mother. She came from Ireland I believe and her father was Nicolas. Alphonse and Philomene's daughter Josephine married Frank St. Mary. Mary Brown was married to Theophile Fournier. John
Wow! Sounds familiar...give me a little while to look for this information and I will get back to you this afternoon or tomorrow...I just moved some things into boxes and storage...wouldn't you know!
