Hello Terry. Looking at some notes I made from an early trip to Malone,[ Aug 1998] I see from the natuaralization records a "Barney" [Bernard?] Boyea Certificate # 1834-1895 page 13, age 65, arrived in USA 1868 from Canada, living in Westville..also in Westville was Julius Boyea, Cert. # 1834-95, page 11 age 60, arrived in USA 1858 from Canada, and also a Robert Boyea, Cert. # 1834-1895, page 12, age 24, arrived in USA 1858, Naturalized Oct 18, 1876, witnessed by H.W. King. Then there was a Bernard Boyer who is listed in the 1830 NY census as living in NYC... Just in case, in History of Clinton and Franklin Cos, NY [reprint] on page 418a there is listed under Military Records 1861-1865 a Nelson Boyra [sic] [Boyea?] private, 98th regt, Co.G Enlisted Dec 1st, 1863.
My great, great, great grandparents, Thomas and Mary (McMillan) Fletcher, moved to Franklin County from Salem, NY over 200 years ago. They are listed in the 1810 census living at French Mills. I have a great deal of information on the family from Thomas and Mary forward, but have, to date, been unable to identify the parents, siblings or birth place of Thomas Fletcher. Might anyone on this list have any information that might be helpful in my search? I have the McMillan family history which has been helpful, however it contains some erroneous information. I have been able to correct some of it, but am still "digging" in an attempt to get all of it correct. Mary had several brothers who were also in Franklin County and their information has been fairly simple to track, but after Thomas was killed Mary married Capt. Henry Lewis and left the county, so the family history also seems to disappear from the area. There was a Sam Fletcher in Franklin County at the same time Thomas and Mary were living there and I suspect they were related (father, brother or cousin), but have been unable to prove or disprove that suspicion. I have included some of the information I have about Thomas in the event someone might be able to provide me with further information or suggestions of where to look for further information. Any help will be most greatly appreciated. Thanks. Carol in Montana FLETCHER, Thomas, born Unknown Date in Unknown Location Father is unknown. Mother is unknown. Married Mary McMillan of Salem, NY circa 1793 in ?Salem/Argyle?, Washington County, New York -- New York for sure; location of marriage uncertain. Source(s): McMillan Family History; no record found in Washington County or in any church records examined in Salem where we know Mary McMillan (Mrs. Thomas Fletcher) lived. The church records of that time period were lost in a fire years ago. Thomas died between the 12th and the 22nd of November 1812/4 in French Mills (Fort Covington), Franklin County, NY Seaver states that there are no town records earlier than 1817 (page 313). Seaver further states that French Mills was entered by enemy forces only twice during the War of 1812 first in November 1812 for two or three hours and second in February 1814 for two or three days (page 321). Fort Covington, on the other hand, became an American military outpost within a month following the declaration of war. (Page 322). Based on the probability of Porter K. Fletcher being a son of this couple it is probable that Thomas died in February of 1814 rather than November 1812. Porter's tombstone shows he died 24 August 1841 at the age of 27, thus he would have been born about 1814. Thomas died as the result of being shot by British soldiers. He actually is said to have been standing in his doorway with his wife and took a shot at four British soldiers who in turn shot him! (Not too wise on the part of Thomas, but so goes life.) Hello Thomas, I am doing research for a friend. The name is Nelson/Narcisse Boyer/Boyea. Nelson was born in 1864. I have a Nelson (right age) in a census with the parents of Bernard (about 1819) and Amelia (about 1828) in Westville, NY and then in Malone, NY. I believe this is the family I am interested, but need to get additional vital records to be sure. I haven't come across the names you mentioned so far. If anyone out there comes across any information on the Hickok/Hickock families that lived in the great northern part of NY State in the early to mid 1800's I would appreciate you sending it on to me. I am still chasing my wife's GGGF Myron Nye Hickok's parents. In the early 1800 census he is found living near Stephen D. Hickok in Malone. He married Eunice Cummings or Cummins (depending on who is doing the spelling). Her widowed mother later married a the wifeless Stephen D. Hickok. Any hints, clues or help will be much appreciated. Hi Joan, John Austin transcribed only the French Canadians from the records from what I found posted on the Huntingdon, QC web page. I did 188 baptisms from these records and the handwriting is horrible, that is why I stoppped. St Joseph, Malone, NY are almost as bad. I would start with Chasm Falls or Notre Dame, the handwriting is better. Someday I might finish Hogansburg. I am a RN and have to read bad handwriting every day at work. Kelly - Is anyone transcribing the Clinton County (Lyon Mountain, Peru, Standish) parish records from your CD? I just finished typing a transcription of St. Alexander's Church Burial Records in Morrisonville. To others -- if you haven't checked my web site lately, I've been branching out to include transcriptions from other counties now that I'm down to one last cemetery in Franklin County (St. Patrick's in Chateaugay). That will be completed in the spring. Since most of my own ancestors came from Essex County, I've been doing a bit of work there and since I grew up in Clinton County, I've added a few of their cemeteries / burial records. Hi Kelly, I just looked over your list of the records you photographed from microfilm. One in particular caught my eye; the records from Hogansburg. I've looked at that film many times. A good part of those records are illegible. I believe John Austin of Potsdam has transcribed what he could from that film, so it may be duplicating his work to try again. Hello Joyce, I will keep your email and be sure you get a copy for your website. I think it's a great idea to have information like this in more than one place. Ok all, Kelly's information from Chateaugay must be a success. I just got an email from someone trying to access the site and couldn't. I went and it said I had exceeded my bandwidth of 1000 MB, but to come back in 12 hours. I wrote my webhosting company because they allow unlimited bandwidth, but at the discretion of the tech support. Since it is a genealogy website and not an illegal site, I see no problem getting the unlimited bandwidth. I am sorry for any inconvience to anyone. I just never thought the site would exceed the 1000 MB in less than 24 hours. Leanne Faucher
Folks, if you get the records for Notre Dame & St. Joseph's typed, I'd be willing to add them to my web site. That would make those records searchable at the same time as my cemetery transcriptions. What do you think? Joyce Visit my Franklin County Tombstone Transcription site at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~frgen/index.htm
To Kelly, Joan, Leanne and others who do such great public service in transcribing and uploading data: I work in genealogy for the Franklin County Historical and Museum Society, in Malone, NY, and I have a request for you all: At the FCHMS, some of us are volunteer genealogy consultants who respond to inquiries by researching our own records and providing information. A lot of our info is in our files because people have donated it - family histories, genealogies, family data sheets, old family letters, obituaries, copies of census records, cemetery listings, etc. Especially, our surname files depend on the kindness of researchers who share their data with us, for others to use as well. So my request is that when you produce a genealogy or family history resource (like cemetery listings), share a paper copy with us for our files (many of our older users don't have Internet access), and share a link for us to add to our website. That way you will multiply the usefulness of your labors. Thanks very much. Hi Joan, I will send you a CD with the file for St Patrick, Chateaugay and the other records not transcribed. Maybe you can work with Leanne on them. She also offered to help. These records are in Latin and French. I have cheat sheets I have made for both. The marriages for St Joseph, Malone are almost unreadable and dark. I lightened the images. I couldn't make paper copies at the FHC from the microfilm they had. They even ordered another film and it was just as bad. I will send the CD out later this week.
