    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JoyceGuinasso Surnames: DeVarney/Duvarney/Devaney/Duvaney Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.franklin/6803.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, Here is the link again for the Plattsburgh Sentinel Newspaper. The first one I noticed did not work. Type in first and last name and make sure you use the pull down and use exact spelling, if not a million other things will pull up. Did I find the correct Napoleon and Victoria on the 1910 Altamont census? If so and that is his obit found in the newspaper there should be a dealth recording for him in the Town Hall or church in Altamont. Here is another link for the newspaper and some addresses and phone numbers for City Clerks office. I would just try giving them a call and maybe they can look it up for you. Have you tried cemeteries in Franklin County? Do you have access to Ancestry.com? (http://news.nnyln.net/) Franklin County Historical Society 51 Milwaukee Street Malone, New York 12953 (518) 483-2750 Franklin County Clerks Office P.O. ST APHONSUS CEMETERY, SECTION THREE, TUPPER LAKE DEVARNEY Section 3 Row 14 Ida May Age 8 years Died 1910 DEVARNEY Section 3 Row 14 Napoleon 1860 - 1923 Victoria Wife 1869 - 1920 Flora Mae DeVARNEY HICKSON 1895 - 1977 Napoleon must have really had an accident in 1923 corrosponding with the newspaper article. Ida may age 8, must be the child who died when Victoria state on the 1910 census that she had 8 children and only 7 living. Flora is also listed on the 1910 census, Have you tried looking for Flora Hickson on a census? Maybe Victoria was living with her after Napoleon's death. So now we know that Napoleon was born in 1860 and the census states that he was born in New York and his parents were born in New York. Victoria was born in Canada and her father born Canada and her mother born New York. I would amagine that Napoleons grandparents were born in Canada and that he used Napoleon as a general name, like most of them. He probably had a different name. I would try looking at every census under the names DeVarney and Duvarney in Champlain and Tupper Lake/Altamont for any male with the same birth year and them contact the church for church records, buriels, births, baptisms. I also noti! ced that the Duvarneys and Devarney moved to Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The Masscusetts Devarneys I believe came from New York and the family that stayed in Rhode Island came straight from Canada and generations seam to continue there. These families I am sure are related. The names probalby are the same Duvarney/Devarney/Devaney. You probably should go under the name on the message boards in Canada and find a French Canadian who has the expertise with the name. The dit-name thing drives me crazy!! No one seam to complain in the U.S. when the names were spelled wrong, even on the census and them of course when you go to church records it gets even more confusing with the spellings. I do not have access to census other than in the U.S. at the moment on Ancestry, but I am sure that someone can pull up Napoleons parents on the Canadian Census. Unfortunately I don't have a surname for Victoria. It has been said that she is half Native from the St Regis tribe but my grandmother remembers visiting relatives in Montreal. I have no idea when Napolean moved to NY or where his parents lived. I found him on the census as Napoline Devarney as a 22 year old boarder in Clinton County, NY. His parents where listed as Canadian. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My husband is also descended from this Drew family I believe. I think that Michael also had a son named William George b. about 1850. Where did you get your info about the birth's of Michael's children? On the census there appears to be some discrepancies. It appears the the twins are not John and Judson, as only Judson appears on the 1850 census, but in 1860 there is a Schulyer and Skinner who are the same age, so they would be the twins. There is no John on the Census at all with this family, but I am guessing that he could be Skinner with the S middle name. If you have any further info I would love to share what I have found. I am trying to find some sort of proof of the son William George Drew b about 1850. He died in 1879, so there isn't a whole lot of info to find since he died so young.
