Sarah Brayton married Philander Helms after his wife died. The Kimpton's and Hungefords were related, possibly they married sisters of Sarah. SOUTH MALONE-MAR. 16, 1885 Mrs. Sarah Helms, met with quite a serious accident on Thursday of last week. She had just returned from Potsdam, where she had been visiting friends and was on her way home from Malone with her son Albert Helms. They stopped a short time at Rodney Kipton's and when driving out of the yard, the sleigh was overturned, throwing Mrs. Helms out and fracturing her shoulder. A doctor was summoned as soon as possible and at this writing she feels quite comfortable and her many friends hope for her speedy recovery. Author: bdevarney Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.franklin/6803.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, Napoleon married Victoire Sauvageau in St. Joseph church in Dannemora, NY on 21 Jun 1885. No parents names were listed for either person. Her surname is interesting since it is comprised of the canadian french word for Native American. As indicated, they had eight children one who died between 1900 and 1910. They are recorded in the Altamont, NY census in 1900, 1910 and 1920. The 1900 census was almost unreadable and therefore their names do not appear in any index. The child who died was a girl born between 1890 and 1895. I believe you have the names of the other seven children. Napoleon was most likely the son of of Pierre Duvernay and Sophie Letourneau. The 1870 Ellenberg, NY census gives Napoleon's age as 9. The family appears to have had about ten children. Eight of them were baptized at St. Joseph de Corbeau church in Coopersville, NY. I wasn't able to find any record of Napoleon's birth or baptism in the church records I had access to. At the time of the 1850 census, they were living in Champlain, NY. I wasn't able to find them in the 1860 census. It could be a case of another unreadable census however. According to the census information, Pierre was born in Canada ~1810-1815. Sophie was also born in Canada ~1820. Hopes this helps. Bernie DeVarney (bdevarney@comcast.net) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. George DeBar was 19, from NY, and thought to be not right mentally; I saw "insane" and "below par in intellect." He was a farmhand working for John Muehr. He attacked Mr. and Mrs. Muehr, both survived, and killed a 14-year-old boy named Paulus somebody. He was taken from the jail and lynched 7 Aug 1855 in West Bend, Washington County, WI. The mob treated him very badly, but I didn't see anything about tearing him limb from limb. This is the best link I found: mki.wisc.edu/Newsletter/MKIFall06.pdf The New York Times archive also has a contemporary account from a Milwaukee newspaper: http://tinyurl.com/3xmt9z The only George DeBar from NY that I can find who was around 19 in 1855 was the son of John and Margaret DeBar in Franklin County. I don't find any sign of him after the 1850 census, but you would know better what became of him. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There were a few of them, whom after the Civil War, disappeared. I also wonder if George Bebar of the lynching story in Michigan is related somehow to the NY DeBar's I am researching. It says "a New York Yankee by the name of George DeBar" was killed by a crowd because he murdered a German farmer. There was a strong German influence in that area. When they found out he had killed the farmer, they tore him apart limb by limb, etc. (gross!) So, I will let you know if I find a solid connection.
