Almon didn't officially change his name, although at the time of his death, he was better known by his pen name of Rufus. Apparantly his widow's name was Ellen, but the transcript I have of the burials at her cemetery lists it as Nellie. His first wife, Elizabeth Perry, was also called "Nellie".. And Almon inherited his father's literary abilities. But I have noticed on Google seearches that it is very difficult to get copies of either Almon Jr's "Old Timers Column" from Tupper Lake or Almon Sr's "Meditations" column from Palm Beach, FL. The obituary I found on Marietta Whitney Clarke indicates she was a writer, too (even winning a penmanship award in the NY State Fair before she married Almon Sr). Almon and Harvey seem to be popular names for the descendants of Abraham Clarke. Harvey was the first name of Almon Jr's youngest brother (who according to the NNYLN was a Reverend, but according to census and other records I have on him was more of a teacher and administrator). Harvey was also the middle name of Almon Jr's eldest son, although he may have gone by just that name when he lived in Rochester. The name Almon not only appears in the aforementioned Clarkes, but also in Almon Sr's uncle (Almon Clarke of upstate NY and Andover, MA) and my own great-great grandfather, whose middle name was originally Almon (Edgar Almon Clarke 1850-1929). I don't have all the info on his life, but I do know a bit about his background, 2 of his wives, and his father's history. Almon/Amnon was the eldest son of Almon Taylor Clarke (1840-1929), a Congregationalist preacher, honorary doctor, and later columinst for the Palm Beach Post. His mother was Marietta Thankful Whitney (1842-1931). Both of his parents were born in Essex County, NY, and both died in the Palm Beach area of Florida. Almon's father was Nahum/Nadhaum Madison Clarke (1812-98), who was the younger brother of my great-great-great grandfather Stillman Clarke (1806-65?). Their parents were Abraham Clarke Jr. (1776-1867) and Edith Taylor (1783-1866). As far as I know, Abraham Clarke Sr. (1736-1817) had nothing to do with signing the Declaration of Independence, although he was listed as a lieutenant in the Massachusetts Continental Army on the death record for his wife Olive Taylor (1744-82). Abraham Clarke Sr. moved his family around a lot after his wife's death: from Townsend, MA, to Sullivan, NH in 1792, to Springfield, VT, in 1811, and to Crown Point, NY in 1816. Almon/Amnon (it wouldn't surprise me if he did change his first name to avoid confusion with his famous father) was married at least twice. His first wife's name was Elizabeth Perry, and they had two children before her death in 1899: Elizabeth Marietta Clarke (b. 3/21/1899) and Almon Taylor Harvey Clarke (b. 12/21/1891). Nellie/Ellen Binan was his second wife. I found out much of her info from the cemetery listings for Tupper Lake, NY. She and her daughter Lorena Clarke LaVallee are buried at St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery, while Almon is listed in the burial lists for Lakeview Cemetery. Interestingly enough, Almon's second wife is not listed in his household for 1930 in Tupper Lake, even though she outlived him by about 4-5 years. Also, I found an interesting list of names for the 1930 Census at 1802 East Av in Rochester, NY: Almon Taylor Harvey Clarke with his family, along with his half-sister Lorena and brother-in-law Albert LaValee. Any information you have on these Clarkes would be greatly appreciated. As far as I know, the only decendants of Abraham Clarke Sr. who still have his last name would be either from Stillman Clarke's line (and I'm the last living male in that line with the Clarke surname) or from Rev. Almon Taylor Clarke's descendants. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
