This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JoanTL42 Surnames: Foley, Murphy Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.franklin/6911.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Massena Observer Thursday, July 22, 1965 Hotel Antiques Will Be Appraised New Owner Plans to Hold an Auction Hogansburg - An appraisal of the antiques in the Murphy Hotel will be made and an auction held, according to Paul Tatlock, 26, who is managing the hotel purchased recently by his father, Harry R. Tatlock, Rochester. The manager said that a number of people had come to him including three women from Virginia, and wanted to buy certain pieces. He has refused to sell, and has promised to send them a postcard and let them know when he decides on the auction date. The father purchased the North Country landmark from Floyd Murphy and his sister, Miss Theresa Murphy, and they threw in the antiques for good measure. The buyer was amazed at such good fortune. The price paid was $22,500. The brother and sister have gone to live in the Saratoga Springs area. They have a brother, James Murphy, at Herkimer, and another brother, Gabriel Murphy, who long had a financial interest in the Washington Senators Baseball Team. They are the remaining four children of the ten children born to Thomas and Anna Foley Murphy. The six deceased included Mrs. Veronica Murphy Bailey, widow of the late Ansel Bailey of the Bailey's Drygood's Store in Massena. Mr. Murphy was born in Bombay and his wife, the former Anna Foley was born on Bombay-Helena Rd., Mrs. Murphy was a sister of Mrs. Margaret Foley Ward, the mother of Clement J. Ward, a Massena broker. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy were hotel people and spent their lives in that business. They operated the old Bero Hotel on the west side of the St. Regis River for many years. But about 50 years ago, or probably in 1916, as one of the older residents in Hogansburg recalls, the Murphy's bought the Ed Cunningham Hotel on the east side of the river, and that has since been known as Murphy's Hotel. It was always a well conducted place; no rowdyism was ever countenanced. It was the type of place to go for a delightful meal, to sit on the lawn leading to the river bank and enjoy the scenery and hospitality. The structure was built in 1818 by Daniel Whiffle Church, a great-grandfather of Dwight P. Church, Canton photographer for old Michael Hogan, who owned all of the town of Bombay and was the father of Assemblyman William Hogan. It was one of the first buildings constructed in Hogansburg. There is more to this article but it does not relate to the Murphy family, just the history of the building. I don't have the parents of Thomas Murphy, but Annie Foley was the daughter of Patrick Foley and Eliza "Lena" Rochford who were both born in Ireland. You can find my tree on rootsweb and at ancestry.com. I have the Foley line posted at Joan's Family Tree or Joan's file. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. One is a marriage notice of the Sept 23, 1885 wedding of Thomas Murphy & Annie Foley in the Franklin Gazette. Thomas & Anna Murphy appear on the 1910, 1920 & 1930 census. In 1900 Anna is called Elizabeth A. on the census. If you need these records, I can transcribe them for you. Let me know. In 1880 Thomas is on the census with parents James & Mary A. Pat R.
