Her Parent's were from Holland. Her father was a captain in the British army during the Revolutionary War, and lived to be one hundred and four years of age. Hi! I am searching for information on my ROGERS and BILLINGS families from Franklin County, New York. Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks, Danielle http://members.aol.com/dthomp3907/index.html
Wow, there are quite a few of us looking in the Franklin Co. area. My family names are SCANLON and MURPHY who were living in Bombay in 1840 and probably earlier, and are mostly buried in Fort Covington. I went there a couple of time looking for dead relatives and was pleasantly surprised to find some living ones. Good luck to us all. Mary.
In 1860, Stephen Washburn and his wife, Rhoda Braton/Brayton were listed in the census as living in Chateaugay. He has several brothers and sisters living in the same area. Does anyone have any knowledge where they might be buried? I am also seeking the burial place of Rueben Washburn III and his wife Betsey, also believed to be in the same region, but may be in Clinton or Essex Country. Rodney L. McKinney [email protected]
I don't know if this family is connected to yours but here is Lewis Lyon's Biography. It comes from this book I have called History of Clinton and Franklin Counties, New York. by D. H. Hurd. It was written in 1880. Lewis Lyon born Sept 18, 1808 in Royalton, Vermont and is the son of Nathaniel Lyon, who settled in Saranac, Clinton County, in 1803 or 1804. Nathaniel Lyon, after whom the mountain bearing his name was called, was one of the first settlers of that part of the country, and was a relative of Gen. Nathaniel Lyon, who was killed at the battle of Wilson's Creek, Mo. in August 1861. There were but two or three families living in Saranac when Mr. Lyon came. The first female child born in the town was Fanny Lyon, now Widow Curtis in, 1804. Mr. Lyon lived a few years on the place where he first settled, and then moved back some four miles, well up towards the base of Lyon Mountain, where he cleared a farm. Mrs. Hattie Lyon, granddaughter of Nathaniel, was the first lady to ascend to the summit of Lyon Mountain, August 11, 1876. During the war of 1812 , Mr. Lyon apprehensive of danger from marauding bands of Indians infesting the country, abandoned his farm and returned to Royalton, Vermont, returning to his farm at the close of the war. It was during this sojourn in Vermont that Lewis Lyon subject of our sketch was born. Lewis Lyon at the age of twenty-two was married to Joanna Ryon. Their children have been Seymore, member of 118th Regiment, NY Volunteers, died in the Army and buried at Yorktown, Ransom, Harriet N., Emma E., Nelson N., and Elmore L.

I have done considerable personal family research on my own lines in Ft. Covington, Franklin Co., NY. My direct line includes Benjamin B. Streeter (b. 1788 who died there in July 1855) through his son, Hardy Platte (Platte) Streeter. Both of them and their families appear in the 1850 Census for Franklin County. I have developed extensive information on Streeter's of Ft. Covington and obtained considerable materials related to them. Hardy Platte moved to Pettis Township, Platte County, Missouri (1860 Census) and then Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas (1865) State Census. I also have some information on his brother, Oscar S (or L) Streeter, who together with Hardy wrote a letter from Detroit, MI, applicable to the settlement of their father's estate in 1855. I have Seaver's book on the History of Franklin County, Ft. Covington and Her Neighbors, and the History of St. Lawrence and Franklin County, and the applicable pages from the 1776 Atlas for Franklin County. The first two books include considerable specific information on my direct line. I have obtained extensive information (including significant personal papers) on the families of Benjamin B. and his son, of Grindal Streeter. Grindal had four sons, David, Allen, William and Washington who became "Millionaires" in the Shoe Business in Chicago, IL, but are buried in Ft. Covington.. And their sister(s), especially Dorcas who remained there until her death. I have some information on the Family of William L. Streeter, whose family and widow also remained there. There are some really great genealogical and historical resources at the House of History in Malone and the Franklin County Court House, for any of you that are not already aware of that. I say all of this to confirm that the list is alive and well and to offer usually quiet and voluntary assistance when I see queries concerning a person or family that I may recall having seen information on. I would particularly like to make direct contact with others from my line. I have information to share, and I am always interested in knowing more about them and all of their relations. In addition, I want to make all of you aware of something that may be of assistance. There seems to have been considerable interaction of my families and others in the Ft. Covington, Franklin County, NY area with families living in the area of Grand Isle County, VT including Rouse's Point, NY. Grand Isle County is the most northwestern county in Vermont and includes the Lake Champlain islands in Vermont. Both of my ancestors married women who were from Grand Isle County. In particular, Benjamin B. Streeter married Sarah Reynolds, and Hardy Platte Streeter married Sophia Minona Clark who had said that she was from Alburgh. If anyone has Clark information concerning her, I would really appreciate knowing it. I would recommend checking that region for your in-laws and ancestors particularly those in the 1800's. It seems to have been a popular resort area for Franklin County people even way back then. I expect many more of the families in Franklin County can trace their lines there too. I generally believe that many of the children of that area settled in Franklin County. Good Luck in your research! I for one have been particularly surprised to learn of the many great things that have already gone on and for that matter still do go on in the North Country! I have never failed to enjoy my occasional visits there! John Willis Streeter [email protected]
Jacob Burnap, b. 5 Jan 1791, served in War of 1812. His pension file says he and Zillah Irish, married 10 Apr 1812, "raised several children who are now living" (in 1871, that is). The only child they name in the file is the "oldest, whose proper name is Sarah Emeline". Jacob Burnap and Zillah are shown in 1850 census in Moira with their son Nelson Burnap and his wife Esther (Chaffee). Would love to know the names of the other children of Jacob and Zillah. Steve
