Malone * taken from Chateaugay March 2, 1805 * As Harrison - changed to Ezraville, April 11, 1808 and to Malone on June 10, 1812 The name Ezraville was after Ezra L'Hommedieu Richard Harrison owned the land that an academy was erected on in 1806. It was a private establishment for several years, under the name of Harrison Academy, later, it became Franklin Academy. Rodney L. McKinney [email protected] NEHGS

    1. Webster St. Cemetery, Malone
    2. Brad Chapman and Lisa Lawrence
    3. I thought that I would post regarding an article written by John Duval in the Malone Evening Telegram (newspaper) dated 5 July 2000. The article is titled "Plea made to spruce up Webster Street Cemetery", and it was on page one. I don't normally get this paper, but picked up a copy while on vacation. According to the article, Malone is two years away from celebrating its 200th birthday and town officials are making a plea for volunteers to help preserve some of the town's history by cleaning and removing brush and tall grass from an overgrown Webster Street Cemetery. The cemetery is considered to be the oldest cemetery in the town. Currently plans are not being made to replace or repair any tombstones or monuments in the cemetery. The article quotes Malone Town Clerk Susan Hafter. She claims that the cemetery has links to the Harison family, one of the founding families of the Malone area. The Malone area was surveyed by Richard Harison, once a law partner with Alexander Hamilton and a friend of George Washington. the settlement in what is now Malone, for a time during the early 1800s was referred to as the Town of Harison. Harison is credited among some local historians as having directed the laying out of "city lots" along what became Webster and Main Street for the first settlement in Malone. "There are a number of founding families from Malone who are buried in that cemetery. It would be nice if the community worked together to make it presentable, " Hafter noted. Town of Malone Supervisor, Maneely, notes that both the Webster Street Cemetery and the Brainardsville Road Cemetery are in need of groundswork. The Webster Street Cemetery is owned by the First Congregational Church of Malone, but church finances aren't able to pay for major repairs or cleanup work at the cemetery. It is noted that there are 17 Malone veterans buried at the cemetery as well. The Brainardsville Road Cemetery is considered to be abandoned, and is cared for by the town of Malone. However, it is still in need of much work. If you are interested, the article notes that you should contact Malone Town Officials at the town offices. Town of Malone Malone-Dufort Airport U.S. Route 11 Malone, NY 12953 Telephone: 518-483-1860 I just wanted to post this information in case anyone was interested, or could help. I know finances are tight for governmental bodies, churches, and cemetery associations (and families), but it is really a shame to see these old cemeteries being left neglected. Lisa

OK-I don't have a lot of dates, but around 1920 Ralph Gowett Sr. married Lillian Maynard, probably in lake Placid-their children were Ralph jr, Marion, Edith, Leona, Eugene and mrs. Dukette (I don't have her first name) Also in that time frame Clarence Clookey married Rachel Sweet. One of their daughters , June Rose Clookey, married Ralph Gowett, Jr, their son Tim is my husband! I did call Chestnut hill cemetary inSaranac lake-is that the only =E7emetary in town? I am still waiting for them to reply. I would appreciate any information you have, thanks Rose, Without first names, you are going to have a problem. To be successful in Genealogical research, you pretty much have to do the digging yourself, looking for clues. Since you know where to begin - Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, you could try checking the cemetery listings for that area. But, as I said, you need first names to properly identify your ancestors. Good luck! It's a long and arduous task, but the results are worth it! :-) Rodney L. McKinney [email protected] NEHGS --WebTV-Mail-20406-1060--
