Why not just block HAHAHA, or what ever the screen name is and end it? All this virus data is really off topic and nonsensical. If you were really infected, your system would be telling you. Hi Rose, I doubt if it is a RootsWeb problem or if RootsWeb can help. Do you have virus protection program? This problem with HaHa was discussed at length on the GEN-NEWBIE mailing list on RootsWeb. You might go to the RootsWeb home page, click on Interactive Search under the Mailing Lists heading. Enter in GEN-NEWBIE and then search GEN-NEWBIE for references to viruses, snow white and haha. If you have problems with this, let me know and I'll try to find some of the info they provided. There are ways to block incoming mail from specific addresses. You difinitely need to do a virus scan of you entire computer (InoculateIT.com has a free virus protection program you might check out). Every time you get this after you've cleaned you 'puter up, just dump it UNOPENED into the trash and empty your trash. Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me directly if you'd like more info. I'm a member of the NYFranklin-L group. I am writing you directly not through the group. I have not seen the original message (and don't want to see it) but I thought I would let you know that not everyone has received your problem e-mail nor are we all having your "HaHa" problem. It appears somebody sent something to you in particular or more likely you picked up a virus someplace else and was programmed to make it look like it came for one of your usual email sites. You probably need to do some virus research at one of the Virus hunter sites like McAfee, Norton or Ontrack to find out how to rid your computer of the virus. I'm not part of the NYFranklin-L site management but it appears they are not communicating with you about your problem, let you know what the rest of us are seeing or not seeing. hb

Hi, happy new year, everybody! Heres hoping that all the people who got computers for Christmas figured them out and found this list! Eternally seeking info on any GOWETTS-not many of us out there-also Who was DELIA RIVERS? She married Fred CLOOKEY and had CLARENCE CLOOKEY on jan 19, 1905 Who was ELIZABETH LaCLAIR? She married GEORGE SWEET and had Rachel SWEET sept 5, 1908 looking for any info on these people, will share what I have (not much) and am interested in descendants of any of these people and their siblings! Thanks, Rose
I think the original settlement of Franklin Co. was indeed due to cheap and/or available land. Various items I have read suggest there were two great periods of emigration into Franklin County, NY, that being pre-1830 and post-1830. For Vermonters, to have their own status stabilized by their little independent Republic of Vermont finally joining the American states in 1791 certainly advanced the notion of stability and westward movement. Therefore by the time the post-1830 emigrants move in, a mixture of Vermonters, French-Canadians and Irish, they occupied the cleared lands that the pre-1830 folks (many Vermonters) had cleared. It was this first group of folks that did not settle so permanently here as the second group, and many moved into the Great Lakes States. The second group was the one who took great advantage of London land agent Edward Ellice and the cheap lands he was selling. I would love to know much more about Edward Ellice. If one actually goes to Malone and peruses the early land records, one would be quite surprised at the land transactions. Unfortunately, this does not always bode well for genealogists for many were also squatters and/or renters, therefore not showing up in the land records, yet do show up in early census returns or other county records such as the state census records or lis pendins, etc, etc. If you read the county histories, one main product out of the lumber industry were masts for the British navy, built of Franklin Co. trees. The soil is reasonably tillable towards the northern part of the country.
Someone suggested that land could be had for Revolutionary War Veterans. Since my Aaron Parks was a Revolutionary War Veteran, how would I check land given/allowed for purchase for a vet? Also, Franklin County seems to have lost Aaron Parks' burial site. There is every indication that he was residing in the home of his son, Aaron, in Constable in March 1848 when he appeared in court on some matter dealing with his pension. And, since he was not well, he may not have survived too much beyond that date. I have the feeling that he should have been buried in either Constable or Malone. However, correspondence forwarded to me from the Congregational Church in Malone indicates that the church's cemetery was moved. I only hope he was buried in Constable and would really like to find his gravesite. But, in the meantime, I'm interested in why he moved to Malone -- maybe the land! Cheryl
Cheryl, The land made available for Veterans of the Revolution was given, not sold. Comparatively few men took the offer. It was designed to settle the area to prevent the British from encroaching on the northern boundary of New York from Quebec. Your cemetery quest may be difficult. Many people were buried in private or family cemeteries that have long ago disappeared. If you don't find your ancestor in a known cemetery, you should look for deeds to land that they may have purchased. This could give you an idea of where to look for grave sites. As for the Malone move -- could be that since Malone was the largest settlement, that's were he chose to live. People started settling the area around Malone as early as 1796, so I doubt if land availability was the reason. Mac
My guess would be the land! Try reading the 1950 book by Stewart Holbrook entitled 'Yankee Exodus' to see why people left New England during various periods. Before the Revolution, within New England people often migrated north-south. After the war when things settled down they looked further north (into Quebec) as well as west. Franklin Co., NY was one of those places however for some it was only a stopping place on the way to Michigan or Wisconsin. Some of the early (pre-1820) Franklin Co. land was being sold by Edward Ellice and the price was certainly attractive and not that far away for early Vermonters to settle. Some places within the county were not farmable therefore other products mainly potash and wood products quickly became the staples.
Cheryl, My guess would be the railroad. The Rutland railroad started in Vermont in the 1800s. My maternal grandfather worked on the railroad in Malone until it closed. Does anyone else have suggestions? Darlene Southern California
Does anyone know why there were so many people [relatively speaking] who moved from Vermont to Franklin County c. 1800/806 [ok, to the area that became Franklin County]? Was there any particular reason for the move? Cheryl
