    3. Hi all! A few people recently contacted me from this list asking for help. I had a system crash and lost all of my previous e-mail and addresses. So, if you are impatiently awaiting an answer, please re-establish contact and re-state your request. Also, someone had volunteered to do typing of cemetery transcriptions. I know the name was something like bquaney, but don't have her address. If you're out there, please e-mail so I can jot down your address for future reference. Stueben County is on the Southwestern tier with Pennsylvania as its southern border. Since Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh) was established long before the revolution, the trail west through their was well used. Access to three major rivers didn't hurt this process. The area in Northern New York was not conducive to westward migration, however. Mac

Perhaps a comparison of where people settled from Franklin (or any other county) would show a pattern of group migration that would reveal previously obscure family relationships. My CLOSSEN/CLASSON family, consisting of John CLOSSEN and Mary GREEN CLOSSEN and children, left Bangor NY and settled in Wayne county MI in early 1850s. Any other Franklin county families who migrated to Wayne county (Detroit area)? Pat Busbice

    1. Migration Patterns
    2. I think you will find that the movement west was encouraged by the land patents available. I have found that a member of the family would move west for the land patents and then the other members of the family would follow. My research has shown that because families settled so close to each other during the early migration from New England that they naturally inter married and this led to what I see as settlement migration, i.e., a number of families moving from NY State to an Ohio and again settling near each other. There is a site where Land Patents can be searched. I do not have the address but I am sure a simple Internet search will turn it up. Jim

    3. Pat, I'm glad you are finding the cemetery work helpful. Three of us spent from 3:30 to 9:00 Saturday working at Riverside Cemetery in Westville. Then we went back and worked again Sunday from 9:00 to 3:30. At some point, the caretaker had moved all broken, flat stones to a single section, laid them flat like a jigsaw puzzle, and left them. Of course grass grew up through the cracks so it took hours to uncover the entire section. (About 30 feet by 10 feet) Then hours more to transcribe & photograph that section. I'm thrilled to say we DID finish. Will do the typing while on vacation in a couple of weeks. So, you can see that it is a TREMENDOUS amount of work. Errors are inevitable, but I try to be as accurate as possible. It is positive feedback like yours that keeps me going! Any volunteers out there to meet me at the cemeteries and help transcribe? Also another family (DUNN) from a different county (Steuben), same time, moved to Michigan in the 1850s. Anyone know about migration patterns? Why Michigan from New York at that particular time? Do we have a cluster pattern we could follow to see if groups of families settled together in the new state, maybe because they were relatives or neighbors in Franklin county? Good possibilities here. Does anyone know more? Pat Busbice
