    3. Hap, I'm not sure if you mean Seneca county or if there is a village elsewhere called Seneca? The following is about Tyre town, Seneca County. (Where my SOUTHWELL family was in the early 1800s.) In the pedigree that came with "Smiths of Tyre," (A family genealogy published by W.E. Morrison of Ovid), there is one William SMITH from that time period. 8th child (of 11) of Joshua SMITH and Mercy SNOW. William was b Sept. 14, 1756, Sandisfield, MA, m. Dec. 19, 1779?, had a son, William SMITH Jr. Served with [his younger brothers] Asa and David 1775-1780 at Ticonderoga and Valley Forge. d. June 7, 1780, in the army. It does not say who he married. Elsewhere it says William died Jan 6 or 7, 1780 (instead of June), 3 weeks after his marriage, and that his son was born after he died (so William Jr. would have a 1780 birthdate). There is also an account, for William Sr., of an accidental death, rather than during his army. Perhaps William Jr. of this family is the one you are looking for, but unfortunately it doesn't trace through that line. Rather, this genealogy follows the line of his younger brother Asa. Living in Seneca County in 1780 is extremely unlikely, as there were only a couple of non-Indians at that time. The settlement really got going about 1805-1812. Do you know the lot number or land description from the land deed? If not it might be worth a call or a trip to the Surrogates office of the County Clerk in Waterloo, ask them to help you find land deeds related to William SMITH. They have tons of land deeds from the early 1800s, in ledgers. Carolyn p.s. I am copying this to the FingerLakes mailing list as someone there may know more. 3. Hi all. Per the website at http://www.itl.nist.gov/fipspubs/55new/nav-top-fr.htm there is a Town of Seneca in Ontario Co., NY. Could this be it? bb ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carolyn Ybarra" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 27, 2002 11:16 AM Subject: [NYFL] Re: [NYSeneca] SMITH, GOFF > Hap, > I'm not sure if you mean Seneca county or if there is a village > elsewhere called Seneca? > > The following is about Tyre town, Seneca County.
