Here is an update on my project: nearly 75% of the links now work on my compilation of the genealogical data in the History and Directory of Yates Co., New York This is a follow-up to the announcement of my new website. It is a compilation of the family data in the county history entitled History and Directory of Yates County, New York, by Stafford C. Cleveland, published in 1873. I extracted the names of all the families and put them into a genealogical software program and then extracted a GEDCOM file from it. I then converted the GEDCOM file into HTML files for placement on the internet. I have been going through the resulting files and cleaning them up and adding additional notes as necessary. If you have relatives who lived in Yates County, New York or adjoining counties, such as Steuben, Seneca, Livingston, or Ontario counties, or individuals who came from New York to Michigan, or other Midwestern states, such as Illinois, Indiana, or Ohio, you might want to have a look at my site. When finished, there will be records on 19,074 individuals on this site, and over 6,500 families. This is NOT a transcript of the entire history, although over the years I have sporadically made transcripts of various portions of it to have posted to message boards and online archives, and when I have remembered, I have links to those extracts in the relevant notes. I have entered notes as to where the families originated if it is mentioned in the history and also where the families moved to when they left Yates County, if that is also recorded, but I did not enter much in the way of biographical information, such personal idiosyncrasies or membership in fraternal organizations or churches to any great degree. This was meant to be a research tool, not an end in itself. While the history is a rather rare book, it has been republished a couple of times since 1873 and copies may be available at your local library or through interlibrary loan. I believe I also have seen it offered for sale through the www.higginsonbooks.com website. Please read the introduction on the first index page, since I put some relevant information as to what you will see when you access the HTML files and also links to where you might find additional information on these families. When I have uploaded all the files, I will add the index to the www.gendex.com website as well. The site is located at: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~bbunce77/index.html Happy hunting!
