    1. [NYFL] MARKS in Oneida Co., NY in 1840 Census
    2. Bill Hart
    3. I don't know whether I've sent this out to any of the recipients before, but if it does I think in bears repeating. In the 1840 Census for Whitestown, Oneida Co., NY is listed a James Marks, as follows: males, 2, under 5 1, 5 and under 10 2, 10 and under 15 0, 15 and under 20 0, 20 and under 30 2, 30 and under 40 females, 0, under 5 1, 5 and under 10 0, 10 and under 15 0, 15 and under 20 1, 20 and under 30 >From all the Census data from 1850 through 1900 I've looked through AND making the assumption that James MARKS is the father of my gg-grandfather Alfred MARKS, this works out as follows: 2 males, 30 and under 40 James MARKS, born abt. 1803 England, died 21 Apr 1873, Auburn, Cayuga, NY cemetery records indicated he was 69 years old at the time of death ???, I'd guess a brother or brother-in-law I've recently found a Joseph MARKS in Cortland Co., NY of an age (and born in England) that could be James' brother. This is purely speculative on my part. 1 female, 20 and under 30 Elizabeth MARKS, born abt. 1810 England, died 24 Feb 1876, Auburn, Cayuga, NY cemetery records indicated she was 65 years old at the time of death 2 males, 10 and under 15 Alfred MARKS, born 1826 England, died 1 June 1886 Owasco, Cayuga, NY cemetery records indicate he was 60 years old at time of death. he and his wife Cynthia (NIVER) MARKS are buried in the same cemetery lot as James and Elizabeth, but this is the only firm connection I have between them. Alfred and Cynthia were married prior to 1848. They are enumerated in Sennett, Cayuga, NY in 1850 and in Niles, Cayuga, NY in 1860. James MARKS, born 1828 England, I don't have a death date. He and the rest of the children of James and Elizabeth are enumerated in the 1850 Census in Auburn, Cayuga, NY. James and his wife Henrietta (AMER or FARMER) are also enumerated in Niles in 1860. 1 male, 5 and under 10 ??? This is an unknown that might fill a gap. There is no male child enumerated in the 1850 Census that would fit into this gap between births 1 female, 5 and under 10 Elizabeth MARKS, born November 1834 NY, died 1924 most likely Sennett, Cayuga, NY She doesn't appear with her parents in the 1855 Census in Aurelius, Cayuga, NY, but Census records indicate she was married by 1855. 2 males, under 5 Thomas MARKS, born abt. 1837, Oneida Co., NY, died 3 Jan 1874 Auburn, Cayuga, NY He is buried in the same cemetery lot as James and Elizabeth MARKS Cemetery records list his age as 36 at time of death He is NOT enumerated with his parents in the 1850 Census The Oneida Co. birthplace is recorded on the 1855 State Census in Aurelius, Cayuga, NY and is available on the USGENWEB site. William MARKS, born 1840, Oneida Co., NY, died 12 May 1906 Rochester, Monroe, NY He is buried in the same cemetery lot as James and Elizabeth MARKS The Oneida Co. birthplace is recorded on the 1855 State Census in Aurelius, Cayuga, NY and is available on the USGENWEB site. All in all, this seems a decent fit. Another couple of factors in thinking that James and Elizabeth are Alfred's parents. James and Elizabeth had one more child, Charles MARKS, born abt. 1847 in Tompkins Co., NY. Mary E. MARKS, the first child of Alfred and Cynthia (who was born in Tompkins Co., NY) MARKS, was born in 1848 in Tompkins Co., NY. In the 1850 Census in Sennett, Alfred and Cynthia are enumerated with daughters Mary and Frances (born Apr 1850 in Sennett, Cayuga, NY). Also enumerated with them is a 13-year-old child listed as female although the handwriting of the name could just as easily be "Thomas". It's circumstantial, but it would explain why Thomas wasn't enumerated with his parents in 1850, but was in 1855 and 1860. And as I've already mentioned, Alfred and Cynthia, James and Elizabeth, William (and his wife Elizabeth), and Thomas are all buried in the same cemetery lot. One drawback is Elizabeth MARKS' will only mentions sons Thomas and William and daughter Elizabeth FRIES specifically, although it seems to imply there are others. ---- Bill Hart
