    1. [NYFL] Michael Clark
    2. Heather Dodge
    3. Hi again, Thanks everyone for your input. I have checked out Joyce's tri County site, that is where I found him on the tax record. MICHAEL sort of disappears for the 1830 Census. I believe he may be the MICHAEL CLARK in Almond, Allegany, NY for that census but, I don't have enough evidence to link him there . So far I can't find land records. There is a MICHAEL CLARK in Nunda 1840 & 1850. He is much younger and not mine, possibly a child or nephew. Anyway my MICHAEL may also be the MICHAEL CLARK of Aurelius, Cayuga, NY in 1820, good age. There seem to be two MICHAEL CLARK'S around the same age in the area. The other MICHAEL seems to be about 8 years younger and he dies in Buffalo area. My Michael Clark around 1847 moves to Port Allegany, McKean County for the 1850-1860 period and dies in Burtville, Potter County 1864. I did find the Mason Cutler information. Mason Cutler Jr. seems to have a child in Lindley in 1854. I suspect Lindley could be a place where Mason Cutler Sr.(it has to be him) might have been Justice of the Peace. Anyone have any idea how I could find that out? That is who the Justice of the Peace's were for a township? Sharon, Thanks for the information on the Cummings. You say they are in the 1870 Census. Which one? Is Avery Clark living with them? I wondered where they went. We have the 1880 Census Cd's at our Library. I'll go look for them there tomorrow, now that I have possibly another name. I had started doubting whether he was Joseph or Josiah or Joshua or something else. Sharon are they burried in the plot that Joseph Cummings purchased alongside Daniel's. ------- PORT ALLEGANY CEMETERY Back Gate Heimel Eastwood Chapin E.Allen Strawbidge Sherwood A.Smith H.W.Davis (Friedley,&Leet) Coon, (Kimble, and Bortho) M.Smith Dan Clark (#65) J.H. Sherrill J.F. Cone Jo Cummings (#67) Kent O.Webb A.Goodwin Bishop Dan Clark bought lot #65 which was in the 2nd tier and 14 lots from the front of the cemetery )the end by the church)...Jo Cummings bought an adjoining lot and may have been related to Dan Clark's wife. Church There are no headstones or any other type of marking on either the Clark or the Cummings plots, nor is there any indication that any had ever been there. A check with the mortuaries revealed that there is no known record of who is buried there other than the headstones, and more than once they have run into unknown graves when digging for another individual. A check with the local Clark family revelaed none of them even knew the plot existed, much less who was buried there. I found Daniel Clark's Interrment record in the Fairview Cemetery. I had to contact the Cemetery district to get the record. They only sent me Clark names. I couldn't find the Cummings in the 1860 Census there so I didn't look for them. Well I better end this. Thanks everyone for your help. If you run into anything else send it along please. Sincerely, Heather Dodge

    3. Dear List, Does anyone have any information on MICHAEL CLARKwho lived in 1822 Hector, Tompkins Co, NY and Painted Post in 1840. I think he may have lived near Lawrenceville PA but over the border into NY so that would put him near Lindley. His son DANIEL married a girl JULIA ANN CUMMINGS from Horseheads daughter of JOS. & ELLEN GRAY CUMMINGS. DANIEL and JULIA were maried by MASON CUTLER Justice of the Peace in 1846. MICHAEL CLARK was born about 1774, he had 2nd wife MATILDA daughter SUSANNAH ELLEN, DANIEL and AVERY for sure. I believe he is on the 1823 tax Roll for Middlebury twp. Tioga PA but that doesn't mean he was living there. I bet he had 10 children his son Daniel had 14 and Susannah had 7(she would have had more except her husband died). They were prolific. Does anyone else have the histor of Michael Clark as a father? Does anyone know where MASON CUTLER was Justice of the Peace in 1846? Here is hoping someone can help!!! Thanks. Sincerely, Heather

    3. I encourage any one who would like to do this, to volunteer on the Random Act of Kindness web page. I am a volunteer for Dekalb County, TN. I have no family here but enjoy helping others. Since I cannot research my family in this county I can help others who do not live here but have ancestors here. You can be specific in what you volunteer for. Example, I only take digital pictures of tombstones, so I can easily e-mail them. Some people do courthouse look ups etc. You can recoup fees if there are any, but I always tell the ones I help to please pass the favor on to someone else. What comes around goes around. I have done maybe 8 in the last couple of years. Not a lot when you think about it. Sometimes I get a couple a month and then I go for several months and not have any lookups. It is very rewarding knowing that I can help some one who is unable to travel for different reason. I just finished one up for a lady in California. She was so excited. She got new names that she had not had before. Birth and death dates. Although I can not find the web page at this moment I am sure there is SKS who would have it and post it for others. I have a full time job, mother of a 10 and 6 year old, volunteer at school and coach basketball and soccer and I am still able to help others. So please think about it, you meet lots of enjoyable people. Well out the door for a championship football game, my sons team won every game this year, here's hoping we can pull one more off. Happy researching! HERBERT LIVINGSTON LOSES LIFE WHILE TRYING TO SAVE A COMPANION. Campville, June12, - The sad accident by which Herbert LIVINGSTON, aged 18 years, lost his life Thursday evening while attempting to save that of his cousin, Grover LIVINGSTON, casts a gloom over this community. The four boys, Herbert, Robert and Grover LIVINGSTON and Archie TILBURY were preparing to go in swimming in the Susquehanna river at Campville when Grover, the youngest, undressed, and not knowing the condition of the river bottom and being unable to swim, he ran into a deep hole and was strangulating. Archie TILBURY saw his danger and being acquainted with the river went to his rescue and soon caught hold of the little fellow. Herbert, fearing the that Archie could not do the work of rescue alone, ran to his assistance, and as he unaware of the hole ran into the water and beyond his depth. He too grasped Archie, and made the problem a difficult one. Archie succeeded in releasing himself from the grasp of Herbert, who swam away, but instead of heading toward the shore, he struck out toward the middle of the river and was drowned. Archie had a hard struggle to get Grover to the shore and Robert who was wading near the shore, was sent for help. Archie rolled Grover as soon as he had him on shore to get the water out of his stomach and lungs. It was a long time, even after assistance had arrived, before Grover was conscious, after as near an approach to death as he will ever face before the final end of life. The river was quite high at the time of the search for the body of Herbert LIVINGSTON was unsuccessful until about 7:30 Friday morning, when J. L. PURPLE of Owego discovered it. The funeral is fixed for Sunday at this place. It is feared that this death may result in the death of the boy's father, as the latter has heart disease. BERKSHIRE. 3. Thanks for the heads up on the 1930 Fed Census. I didn't know about it. I haven't had the time to go to our Clayton Genealogical Library in Houston since it came out in March. This is a big help. I went to Oklahoma and printed off the ED's for the four counties that I am interested in. This is going to be of tremendous help when I get to the Library. Again, many thanks for letting others on the list know about this wonderful aid. 3. Maybe "tramps and vagrants" is a case of legal redundancy like "cease and desist" and "null and void". My dictionary defines "tramp" and "vagrant" similarly but I've always thought of a tramp as someone who wanders from town to town whereas a vagrant doesn't necessarily move around, a tramp would be a vagrant but a vagrant wouldn't necessarily be a tramp. I suspect that "wonderful" was intended as satire. -----Original Message----- From: Carolyn Ybarra [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, October 17, 2002 3:25 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NYFL] Tioga County News March 12, 1891 (cont.) Hmm, wonder what the 1891 definition of "tramps" is versus "vagrants?" (I have the old Sonny & Cher song "Gypsies, tramps & thieves..." running through my mind...) I also love the phrase saying the tramps "hover around in a wonderful manner." Obviously "wonderful" does not have the same meaning it did 100 years ago! I found a distant relative (who has the same name as my G Grandfather) was in prison for "making counterfeit coin" in 1870. Have to love those criminals, at least they show up in the records! 2. I didn't use the Administrivia I normally use when I want everyone's attention because this admonition is primarily to myself. I did NOT mean to make any of you think that the author of the Glenwood Cemetery book is in any way not willing to share the information. Evidently she has done lookups herself and has also spend a tremendous amount of time on this project. I greatly, greatly respect any author's wishes on their works. I did not realize the book was still in print when I made the offer nor did I realize that the author has been very actively sharing her work. I should have done more research in attempting to contact the author and to find out her feelings on this and on the availability of the book. Much of my family is buried in Glenwood Cemetery and this book has enabled me to find other names that I have been researching. It is a well put together, very well researched work - and that is the key - it is work done by the author. I imagine that any "profit" made from the book is far outweighed by the amount of work, research, time and personal expense that has gone into this book For those of you who are unable to purchase it, try your local library to see if they have purchased a copy. There is someone in Ithaca who has accumulated information concerning burials at a local Catholic cemetery and even though there seems to be no intent to publish them, the person is averse to sharing them or allowing the church to share them. 2. Thank you to the kind person on this list who offered to do look-ups in "Index of Burials in Glenwood Cemetery, City of Geneva, Ontario County, NY." It is sad that the author of this publication so quickly acted to have the offer withdrawn. This paperback book sells for $26 plus postage. Anyone researching many Geneva-area families would likely buy the book. But the cost is rather expensive if you need information on only one or two names that might be in it. Where is the spirit of sharing that used to be found among family researchers? Or is it now all about gathering public records and putting them into a format to be sold?

    3. Hmm, wonder what the 1891 definition of "tramps" is versus "vagrants?" (I have the old Sonny & Cher song "Gypsies, tramps & thieves..." running through my mind...) I also love the phrase saying the tramps "hover around in a wonderful manner." Obviously "wonderful" does not have the same meaning it did 100 years ago! I found a distant relative (who has the same name as my G Grandfather) was in prison for "making counterfeit coin" in 1870. Have to love those criminals, at least they show up in the records! 3. At the risk of taking on more than I can chew ... I live in the area, and would be glad to actually go to Glenwood and find the headstones -- and take pics of them to send to whoever is inquiring. I absolutely love cemetery walking, and am always happy to have an excuse to go. Besides, my own family is there, so I can stop at their stones to say hello. All I ask in return is that you pass along the favor to someone who needs info from the area in which you live. Jennifer --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
